Happy hump day!

15 degrees in the GTA today??? While I love it, it just cant be good can it?

So, the Maple Leafs changes their logo, again.  It is what I thought it would be in that it’s a tweak.Darren Dreger said it best this am, “It’s just a Maple Leaf”.

Truth be told, it’s just further admission of years upon years of failure.  If the team is a winner, you don’t mess with logos.

I don’t like or dislike the new logo, it is what it is.

I was at the Bruce Springsteen concert at the ACC last night.  Couple of points:

Show was awesome.  The guy is a machine and he and his band clearly love what they do.

You pay all the money for the show and you leave early?  I don’t get it ACC… More than a handful of fans bolted way before the end…Good to see Stroumboulopoulos and other media types hung in until the bitter end!

So, I hate when a ticket is sold way above face price.  When brokers buy all the inventory ahead of the public, it sucks.  So the ACC had a policy last night that if you pre-ordered tickets you didn’t get a physical ticket; instead you had to present the paying credit card to the ticket taker.  Your card was scanned and a ticket printed.  Sounds easy enough right?

Wrong…

Chaos… Totally bungled by the staff at the ACC.

Someone I was with had the paying credit card, but her id didn’t match the name on the card (no instruction said it had to) and the moron ticket taker tried to refuse her entry… Not smart.

Highlight of the night was when an 89 year old woman got lifted on to the stage to have a birthday dance with The Boss!

It’s Superbowl week!  Is it me or is the hype a lot lower this year than in the past?

I find it funny that Toronto media outlets (what’s left of them) are sending reporters to the game this early.

The Toronto Sun has been kind enough to be dropping off a free print copy of their publication at my house.  I will admit it, I LOVE getting a physical paper.  The other day after a Raptors game, and no Leafs game, the Raptors appeared on page 11 of the sports section even after an 11 game winning streak.  I know, I know, I know…don’t bother telling me it’s a Leafs town.  I can still know it and be disappointed.

Here’s a link to my weekly appearance on the Todd Shapiro Show with Todd Shapiro.

The Sun’s John Kruyk floated the ole ‘the NFL would work in Toronto if the following 8 things happened’ this week. Unsurprisingly, government $$$$ was required. How out-of-touch can anyone be to propose we help pay for a billionaire’s playpen so he and his stooges can enjoy a proper Super Bowl party one day?

  2. The Londoner says:

13 minutes, the most I could listen to John Shannon before turning the dial. Just terrible.

  3. Rob says:

Question of why the Raptors are on page 11? Although it seems the Raptors are the current toast of the town, the TV ratings are shocking. Weekly, the ratings are similar (sometimes even less) than English Premier League TV ratings. The only difference between the EPL and the Raptors is that the EPL games are shown in the morning while the Raps are prime time. Although I have no doubt the ratings during the playoffs will be much stronger, I can’t help but believe the Raptors are just a bandwagon thing and lack the devoted fan.

What the Raps have that the other teams don’t have is the youth. That Drake thing is a stroke of marketing genius and it will eventually pay off for them; so as long as they keep winning, slowly people will pay attention.

13 minutes of John Shannon is a lot. 13 minutes of Doug Maclean, now that is the worst.

It’s odd about the raps not drawing on TV. It’s never quite been the same since swirsky left but the numbers should be strong. The epl crowd is pretty niche, and my guess is the champ league numbers are way lower.

  5. Alex says:

Shannon was good the other with fred guardelli from nbc talking tv stuff.

Why the NFL won’t be successful in TO:

Conservative drinking rules, Brewery controlled beer tents. $12 drafts
The party is the tailgate, the game is pretty boring when you factor in tv time outs.

Just felt compelled to say that….

  7. Poker Guy says:

The Cauz Wheeler show is brutal to listen to. So, I stopped listening.

  8. Derrick says:

Those interested in the future of MSM should listen to the latest Jonah Keri podcast with Keith Olberman. Fascinating stuff.

  9. Rob in Aurora says:

Poker Guy: Macko is missed terribly in that time slot. Wheeler is ruining that show -apparently its permanent. The never mention Bob any more.

…and I love the new Leaf logo. I keep looking at it – its a huge improvement over the current logo, which is a symbol of the horrible Ballard years. Gordon Stuckless, the return of Punch Implach, Yolanda, dismal playoff failure under Mike Smith, John Ferguson Junior and Brian Burke (I just throat barfed). It was a much needed change, whether they were losing the last 40 years or not.

The Leafs chose to use the Leaf that resembled the leaf on the Canadian flag for the 1967 playoffs. Reminder: that it was 1967, the new Canadian flag was only a couple of years old at the time and we were in the centennial year celebration. The new Leaf crest for the playoffs would have looked cool at the time, but it was a departure from their original classic Leaf logo – it was high time to get back to their winning roots and have that emblem back (a “logo” is a corporate maketing term – and the Leaf crest is in fact the “logo”, but its a crest and an emblem. I like it a lot. Good riddance to the current one.

You are right on – No tailgating unless it is structured and run by
the province/brewers retail-Apparently adults in Ontario are unable
    to make decisions for themselves-

  12. Poker Guy says:

@Rob: You’re right regarding Macko. However, with the suggested changes to TSNR, hopefully, neither of those two will be in the line up.

  13. (Another) Andrew says:

I listened to PTS tonight for the first time in a while. It sounds like Don Cherry, who was otherwise fine on the show, is just never going to get over Dale Hunter’s suspension for his vile cheap shot on Pierre Turgeon.
