Did Cliff Try To Deal Leaf’s 09 Pick?

I haven’t seen the source, but Damien Cox wrote this in his blog this am:

“Then comes a published report this morning that suggests the Leafs were willing to trade their 2009 first rounder on a conditional basis and a couple of prospects to Anaheim for Mathieu Schneider and youngster Bobby Ryan.”

I have scoured around a bit from Detroit this afternoon, but I have seen this report. The deal doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me but…..

Anyone see this report yet?

Here is Damien post

Schenn realizes a dream early

I can’t speak for Luke Schenn. Hell, I am pulling a Mitch Albom, I am writing about a game I wasn’t at, even worse I didn’t see it or highlights of it. Oddly enough the barnburner between the Blues and Buds didn’t make it on to any airwaves here in Detroit this evening. Much of what I am writing about has come from fellow readers….

As a kid growing up I played ball hockey on the driveway and or street of my parents house all the time. Friends of mine, my brothers, cousins etc. Would come over and would play for hours. Someone would be Sittler, someone McDonald and so on. We would all call out game scenarios to make the game we were playing more important then of course it was. Inevitably, we all at one time or another made up the scenario where the coach picked us to take the penalty shot to end game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. Of course right??? We all did that right? Even today I hear my son playing on his DS or in our driveway setting up the scenario in which he is the ultimate hero…and he is only 6.

One has to assume that for Luke Schenn, a small part of that dream for all of us was realized tongiht. I know, it was nothing more then a meaningless exhibition game, but still with the game on the line, and it was an NHL game, the coach looked down his bench (like he did in all of our dreams) and called Schenn’s name….Schenn returned Wilson’s back scratch by filling the net with the rubber to give the Buds the victory. Good for both of them. Good for Wilson for rewarding the kid for a solid night and good on Luke for paying the coach back.

I still think Schenn plays 10 games here and then goes back to junior. It is nice to see we may actually have a real prospect in the system.

How nice was it to see these quotes from Ron Wilson tonight?:

“we practiced shootouts today………against legacy, you want shooters that shoot right”

Refreshing to see that Wilson is actually doing some coaching and is also prepared for games the way a coach should be. Too many nights in the past the buds went into these scenarios blind, with the same guys going to shoot becuase Maurice had his favorites….

So a meaningless game with some nice takeaways despite blowing a third period lead…

Wilson Gives Them Hell

No surprise right?

Wrong, the them isn’t the players, it’s the media:

““It was an exhibition game – it didn’t bother me at all,” Wilson said Sunday. “What bothers me is being asked asinine questions while you’re trying to give young players a chance.”

Good for him. Wilson gave to the beat boys after another round of stupid questions comparing last years team with this one after 4 meaningless exhibition games.

“We’re not going to win the Stanley Cup this year. There’s a news flash for you.”

Once again I love his candid replies to the press. Good on him.

J.P. Ricciardi Isn’t A Liar, Because HE Knows The Truth

It’s an old story I know….

“It’s not a lie, If I know the truth”

I would love to say that the quote belonged to some great philosopher, but no it belongs to our Blue Jay GM.

Why the guy feels the need to continually lie is beyond me. Nevertheless, he did it once again yesterday, and again he got caught:

J.P. told the Blue Jay beat reporters Friday that he hadn’t talked to AJ Burnett’s agent.
J.P repeated the lie yesterday when asked again.
When the reporters told J.P. that AJ had already confirmed the meeting, J.P. started doing the backstroke on pace to best Michael Phelps!

“”We talked, but it wasn’t about money or anything like that.”

Done laughing yet???

it get’s better:

Asked what they had talked about, Ricciardi said: “Arkansas football. Just a visit. What do you want me to tell you?”

Here’s a novel idea J.P., start with the truth. Those in the city who hate you, sorry, those in the city who dislike you immensely (hate is such a strong word) do so in part because you act like a pompous ass. You blew most of your credibility when you had the nerve to utter that garbage about the lie. Yet you haven’t learned your lesson. Did your hero in Oakland not teach you the most important 2 words in a GM’s vocabulary? “No Comment”

It was funny to read Godfrey’s comment on J.P. that no one knows what a great guy J.P. is, how he is a family guy…etc….the reason no one knows that is because J.P. acts like a complete asshole to the rest of the world. He talks down to fans all the time. He spews words on the radio about other team’s players, he embarrasses the Blue Jays. If, as Godfrey says, the reason for this is that he is so emotional after a game, then don’t put the guy on the radio after a game. Do the show on off nights, or, don’t do the show at all. To continually have this guy speak on beahalf of the team is a joke. You can’t even say you don’t know whether to believe him or not, he has lied so many times he makes Tim Johnson look like a saint. We don’t believe a word that comes out of J.P.’s mouth anymore. I swear the guy probably told people it was his first choice to move the minor league team to Las Vegas. Do us a favor J.P. let Cito be the spokesperson from now on. When asked a question that you are tempted to respond with a lie (sorry, let’s be clear, an answer that YOU KNOW is INTENTIONALLY INACCURATE) take a deep response and say, “No Comment.”

Double Post- Amazing Michigan Game

Sorry for the double post. Was trying to write from my BB and I wasn’t sure it went through.

Took my son to the Michigan Football game. Have to tell you it was the worst game I have ever seen. Wait, wait wait, I know they won in the greatest comeback in team history- we left at halftime!

Will take a tour around the usual places and get a post up tomorrow am.

Hockey looses a legend

There is but one Hockey movie worth talking about, just one, Slapshot.

Paul Newman made lots of movies, won awards for other roles, he will always be Reggie Dunlop to me. The player coach of the Johnstown Chiefs. A role that was allegedly inspired by John Brophy.

It is a classic movie and in my book the best sports movie ever made.

So you can take your Butch and Sundance, you can take your salad dressing or popcorn, he will always be Reg to me….

I can’t believe they brought their fucking toys!

Rest in peace coach

Paging Dr. Maurice…..Dr. Maurice to the OR

“Every time I get fired, I like to take a few courses,” Maurice told ESPN.com on Friday.”

Paul Maurice on how he is keeping busy these days- taking courses while commuting to University of Windsor…

Reminds me of this classic scene from Tommy Boy:

Tommy: Did you hear I graduated?
Richard Hayden: Yeah and just a shade under a decade. All right.
Tommy: You know a lot of people go to college for seven years.
Richard Hayden: I know, they’re called doctors.

At this clip Maurice could be the new McCoachie on Grey’s Anatomy within3-5 years!
