Breaking: Big Changes At The Toronto Star

August 14th, 2011 | by torontosportsmedia

This isn’t just a sports media story, but multiple sources have confirmed for me this morning that the next time you read the Toronto Star you may need a program. I’m told as many as 30+ staff are being reassigned, including some in the sports department.

The names I’m hearing most in sports who could be looking at changed responsibilities are Paul Hunter and Morgan Campbell.

Changes are far and deep. Some veterans are going to be working on completely new assignments; some veterans will be moving on from beats where they’ve been working for more than 10 years.

Interesting times.

More details later.

It would make too much sense to reassign Zelkovich back to sports media columnist so I assume there is no chance of that happening

  2. Bill Sandford says:

I do know that Bob Mitchell is being moved from Mississauga to the sports department.

  3. Chris F. says:

Interesting, I can see this as being a response to the Star being a super liberal paper that has too many well entrenched reporters/columnists.

It’ll be interesting to see what exactly the changes are in the sports department and beyond.

  4. Gerry (BUrlington) says:

@Chris F, had to laugh when I read your comment of the Star being super liberal I had visions of them adding a Hammer and Sickel to their Logo to go with the Star. LOL

  5. Steve (in Hamilton) says:

I don’t know that there’s a direct connection between super liberal and well entrenched reporters/columnists, since conservative papers have that problem as well.

The problem, as it seems to me, is that Toronto has 4 daily papers in a culture where fewer and fewer people are reading/buying newspapers.

But since I don’t read the Star very often, I can’t really comment.

My biggest concern, as always, is how the media world will change as the traditional media dies. I often find it troubling.

Who needs Zelkovich when you have TSM? This website is better than anything Longley, Zelkovich, Houston or Dowbiggin ever had or wrote.

Because we all know liberals and communists are the same thing…

I know it’s a joke but really it’s indicative of the general ignorant slandering from both the republican party and their wannabe imitators the conservatives.

While going off topic on politics, I’d also like to point out that the republican and conservative parties fail very badly at the one thing they advertise more than anything, economics and specifically for example controlling debt and gov spending.

Every liberal government since the 80s has been forced to clean up after the terrible monetary situation left by their predecessors, who somehow manage to rack up ever more ridiculous debt while simultaneously cutting programs for the sick, poor, needy, disadvantaged, etc.

And without fail every conservative government manages to destroy thhe surplus left by their liberal forebears, all the while spouting about their fiscal responsibility.

Sorry to rant but it makes me sick listening to the verbal and written attacks on liberals, first from the GOP/conservatives then repeated by their ignorant pawns.

But I guess as long as the rich get richer then that’s good for the average person right….if you are an ignorant sheep I suppose you can see the “logic” in this.

Seriously if people are going to make ridiculous claims about media sources then it would make a lot more sense to compare fox news to a certain notorious propaganda producer of the20th century.

  8. Nick says:

James, I too am a middle of the road guy. In fact I fear extreme left as much as I fear extreme right both in politics and religion. However before you make a comment on the liberals, you only have short term memory. While it is true Mulroney left a mess that Chretien/Martin had to fix. Let’s not forget Trudeau came in with a national debt of 18 million and retired with a national debt of 200 million. They are both to blame.
