Changes In Ontario Sports Media Scene

I am told by reliable sources this morning that Ian Mendes is leaving Rogers Sportsnet and is headed to Ottawa and the Team 1200 (TSN Radio) to host a drive show.

Big loss for Sportsnet.

Congrats to Ian, love it when good things happen to good people!

Very solid reporter. Always came across as articulate and with a sense of humour both on TV and on the radio.

as someone who only interacts with the print and radio side of things, I have no idea who Ian Mendes is. Can someone explain what he did at SN and why TSM believes he might be good as a radio host?

in other matters, could the people at Sportsnet stop trying to make Ken Reid happen. It’s not going to happen.

He’s a more annoying version of John Shannon.

I believe Mendes was already based in Ottawa so I don’t think he has to move…………….he was the Ottawa reporter for Sportsnet (similar to Gene Principe in Edmonton or Roger Millions in Calgary)

He’s a solid reporter and seems like a good guy………….I have heard him as a guest on the radio several times………….he knows his stuff but I never really pegged him as a potential sports radio host…………….congrats to him

Can someone explain what he did at SN

Standard on location straight reporting from hockey rinks, etc. It’s not a position that lends itself to showing one’s personality so despite seeing him for years he seems interchangeable to me with the other on site reporters.

  5. Darrell says:

I hated the guy’s reporting when it came to the Ottawa Senators; but otherwise a solid reporter.

I think two things have changed for Ian over the last 1-2 years especially:
    1) He’s got more opinion to give as developed through his speaking engagements across the country – Sens broadcasts never gave him an opportunity to be a personality (aka someone with an opinion)
    2) Young family – tired of being on road and missing milestone family moments, as indicated by his today’s parents writing over the last year where he wishes he was at home more.

Both of those will be achieved if he takes a radio gig

  7. SensFanDan says:

Hopefully he replaces Simpson, I’ve heard enough of pino and cougars and the Crapitals and Laffs for one lifetime. Welcome onboard Ian!
