Do You Watch Sports Highlight Shows On TV?

By TSM

Had a great sit down yesterday with a MSMer and one of the topics we discussed was the current state of the evening or morning sports highlight show. Curious, do you watch the old traditional sports highlight show anymore?

In 2014, no need. Get stuff sooner online and only what i want.

No. Not sure when I completely stopped watching them, but more than ten years ago at least. I really wonder why anyone still watches them in 2014. I assume most people have maybe two or three teams or leagues they care about, and wouldn’t want to waste 30 or 60 minutes watching highlights and news of mostly stuff they don’t care about.

There’s no need to watch sports highlight shows or news shows anymore. I mostly only care about the Toronto teams and if I want any other highlights they’re all accessible online. 10 years ago these shows also used to be a source of news; now we’re constantly aware of news up the minute on twitter and our mobile devices.

10 years ago the 6:00 or 6:30 edition of Sportsnet Connected or Sportscentre were daily must-viewing. Now? I honestly can’t remember the last time I watched one of those shows. There’s still value in more specialized studio broadcasts such as hockeycentral or Keith Olbermann’s EXCELLENT new show on ESPN, but the days of the old-fashioned sports highlight show are long gone.

I do listen to olbermann’s podcast, but skip the hiighlight segments.

I’ve scaled back over the years and pretty much only watch PTI everyday nowdays, everything else I’ll catch glimpses but wouldn’t consider it a “watch”.

Watch sportscentre every morning before work. Being a person who works very long days, and lives in an area where good high speed internet isnt readily available, the highlight shows are still important.

I stopped watching once Dan and Jay left. However, the new morning team on Sportsnet are pretty good. I sometimes catch them when I have time.

I do! mostly at night when I’m bored and talking with a friend on Skype or something. It’s something to keep in the background. xD

They bore me, haven’t for many years. The only times I used to watch them were for Fred Hickman and Jim Huber when CNN used to have a nightly sports highlights show. I watched Hebscher/Tatti on their show when I moved here from Montreal in ’89 for a while. I do watch a lot of NBA tv and their highlights, but it is specialized, and each game is broken down so it offers a lot more. Nothing bores me more to death than hockey highlights.

This is off topic, but apparently the Globe’s strategy for making money in this rough publishing market is to feature noted plagiarist Margaret Wente more prominently on its website. She used to be down at the bottom so I could scan the news of the day without knowing she exists. Not so much anymore.

@Alex Olbermann’s show is the best example of what highlight shows should evolve into. It’s too bad TSN won’t pick it up so we wouldn’t be reduced to listening to the audio of a TV show. Of course, TSN thinks audio of a TV show is actually quality programming.

I have not for many, many years even though they are promoted like they are the greatest thing since beer in can.

If I want a score, I check my phone or online.

If I want news, the same thing.

I don’t know why they get so much attention. I figure they must be very cheap content.

I watch the SN 360 morning highlights every morning which still uses the old The Score format — 95% highlights, very little of the useless talking heads.

Great and easy way to catch highlights from every game in every league from the night before. The big two shows won’t always cover every MLB or NBA game.

With DVR’S, YouTube and ESPN, why would anyone work on someone else’s schedule, in 2014???
