I Don’t Like Mondays

April 11th, 2011 | by torontosportsmedia

Oddly enough, now that I have kids, I find that I look forward to Mondays. I happened to hear the old classic by the Boomtown Rats today so, there you go.

Couple of random things tonight:

First, let me set the record straight. I am not ripping Jolly Old Jonas over at 640. We have very similar names, and that’s the beginning, middle and end of it. I can’t tell you how many people I know tell me that they love listening to me on the radio (they know me but obviously have no clue what my voice sounds like).

I am told that Jim Ralph will be hosting the Bill Watters Show tomorrow. No offense to Ralph, but WOW does that ever tell you what 640 thinks about the drive home show. Ralph does colour on Leafs games. He’s not a radio show host. If ever there was a clear sign of the white flag being waved this has to be it.

Many of you have asked, and I don’t have definitive answers, but I am told that Claude Feig will be handling the updates from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on TSN Radio when it launches this week.

A name that I am sure is in the mix of things over at TSN has to be Steve Simmons. He was on the Fan years ago and is good on the Reporters with the guy who should still be hosting HNIC.

Did anyone else have great difficulty watching the Leafs game Saturday night? I just couldn’t do it.

Years back I asked this question about the Toronto Maple Leafs: Would the Leafs get ripped for not spending to the cap? There is no way they would cut ticket prices, so, do they instead have to spend to the cap irrespective of performance? If we continue to spend top dollar, don’t they in turn have the same obligation?

Interesting that Damien brings up the same point in his most recent column:

“The Burke regime’s emphasis on youth is smart, and patience is crucial. At the same time, however, the Leafs spent millions under the salary cap this season and Joffrey Lupul was the only significant in-season addition.

Remember, when Jeff Finger was dumped in the minors last fall, Burke told the hockey world the idea was to use the cap space ($3.5 million) to add talent. But it never happened. In fact, more big salaries were deleted later in the season, including Francois Beauchemin, Kris Versteeg and Tomas Kaberle.

And everybody in Leaf Nation is okay with this?”

I am surprised that it has taken this long for the Leafs to be ripped for not spending to the cap.

There is one point that Damien makes, that others did as well, that I just couldn’t agree with more:

“GM Brian Burke, for starters, has made it clear he not only wants Ron Wilson back as head coach, he wants to make sure the coach’s delicate constitution isn’t bothered by having to work his magic without a safety net, otherwise known as a contract extension.

That’s a mistake. Wilson should have to earn that extension by getting the team to the playoffs. If he can’t do that, he’s the wrong guy.

Wilson has 619 NHL victories but needs an extension to sleep at night? Baloney.”

I said in my last article, I don’t get this whole lame duck argument at all.

Best article I read all weekend? The Star article on Charles Tator (admission, I too went to the same summer camp!) Hat tip to Randy Starkman for shedding some light on the guy that many in the neanderthal part of hockey have claimed is trying to ruin hockey.

Special congrats to the boys on the NT White Novice Team. After a challenging beginning of the season they did their coaches and parents proud sweeping the best 2/3 championship series this weekend. Little TSM and all the boys played their best and we couldn’t ask for more than that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they get Simmons to co-host once a week with Cybulski like they are doing with Bruce Arthur on Mondays

A lot of people find Simmons annoying and I can understand why but I enjoy listening to him………..his Sunday column might be the most popular column in the country

Spending right to the cap means no flexibility. Remember Burke was using that space to try to get young players while being able to take on a salary dump. To some degree that was what the Lupul trade was.

  3. I don’t mind Jimmy Ralph hosting. He’s funny and doesn’t try to be outrageous or controversial just for the sake of being outrageous and controversial.

BTW is anyone other than me starting to really tire of Greg Brady? He always sounds so exasperated at everything. And not angry in a Don Cherry full on manly rage but a prissy whiny kind of angry that just makes you want to tell him to shut up.

  4. MwG64 says:

Thank you “The Meatriarchy”…Brady just grinds on my last nerve!..He is always taking cheapshots at Lang who like the good sidekick just laughs it off?
But to me Lang has way more credibility then the whiny Brady does, at least in this market place!
As for Jim Ralph co- hosting..I think it may work..he is one funny guy!..I will be tuning in…I have said it before Bobcats act is wearing alittle old..By the the time he has gone through the bantering there is no time left for the interview!

  5. @MwG64 Let’s hope Richards at TSN radio is a worthy replacement.

Greg Brady is painful to listen to, and he is always right, i mean, just ask him. Also, his pop-culture references are inane and obvious. Last week’s Wang Chung and Don Johnson bits were horrible!!! I feel for Jim Lang having to suffer thru it all..
    Bring on Mike Richards!!!

  8. Chris F. says:

Jim Ralph hosting on 640 tonight? Yeah that’s the white flag right there.

As for Brady, I still like him but i’m also starting to get that “whiny kid” vibe from him as well. I don’t know what’s up with him lately as he wasn’t that whiny during his afternoon show or at 640…Maybe he doesn’t like Lang or his new hours?

As for Steve Simmons I think he’d be a great fit for what TSN Radio is looking for either as a host of his own show or co-hosting with Cybulski.

  9. Josh says:

Err, should I say Jim Richards… anyone other than Brady!!!

All of Toronto Sports Media is becoming a bore. They re hash the same old topics day after day, depending on the season. Since the Leafs are out of the playoffs, let me suggest a topic nobody ever talks about. during the owners lockout, I never heard one media person take the position that they hate salary caps and the downsides to them. During call in segments, I only ever heard one person ( a guy from Cambridge) say as I do, hate salary caps. Why is erveryone protecting owners? Has anyone ever been to the ACC and seen a person wearing a Leaf Jersey with “TEACHERS” on the back. There is at least one NHL owner that would love to get rid of the Cap and it is not in Toronto! Im not a leaf fan, but under a free market system, should the Toronto Maple Leafs not be the New York Yankeees of the NHL.
Making the NHL Playoffs can’t be that difficult, over half the teams get in. The Red Wings have made it for 20 straight years!
I can think of many more topics and Im not that smart! but then again McCown is the “SMARTEST MAN ON THE PLANET.”

Jim Ralph does an amazing Don Cherry impersonation

  13. MwG64 says:

I used to play pick up hockey with Jim Ralph and he would do a Cherry or a Paul Morris after you scored!!It was Hilarious!…He did a good job tonite and it will be nice to get a new group of insiders as well…How much can we take of the same guys…They are on TV as well as the radio saying the same thing?
Jim also has some really good stories from his AHL days while riding the bus..Just wondering how long the show will last?

  14. Jim also does an awesome Bob Cole impression.

  15. @bob before the cap the leafs were one of the top spending teams in the NHL however they didn’t spend the money that well. Basically overpaid for aging free agents who wanted to end their career in Toronto.

And for the record plenty of hosts on fan590 have spoken out against the cap. Don Landry was a fairly vocal opponent if I remember correctly. In fact around the time of the lockout the common refrain from most of the fan 590 hosts was “why are all you leaf fans supporting a cap? It will hurt your team”

  16. Synaptik says:

Well, I think Jimmy has proven everyone wrong! No one has clicked with Billy better than Jim! And the show has never been better! Rock on Boys!
