Hump Day Toronto Sports Media Rumours

By TSM

Unfortunately life as a Maple Leaf has reduced excitement down to just about three days in a given season: draft day, free agent day and trade deadline day.  The last is less than a week away and with Rogers NHL viewership I feel for those behind the mics and cameras as leaf fan interest in the leafs will likely sputter post deadline.

 https://amp.twimg.com/v/2af8c07c-0db8-481e-a2ad-43ce671b821b

That’s the ad running to promote the new morning show that’s set to kick off on NHL trade deadline day.

I’ve heard lots of names about who will be part of the “and co.” as we crawl closer to the launch. The names I’m hearing most are George Rusic and Kayla Harris.  No one at Rogers will speak officially about it, but enough people are mentioning the same names that I can call that an official rumor.

Word is that Rogers made a play to land Darren Dutchyshen from TSN and came damn close.  He remains at TSN though.

While nothing has been said officially, it’s sounds like Andrew Walker will indeed make the move to 1pm along with Greg Brady. Wouldn’t it be funny if the show were callled Brady and Co.?

Lastly, I heard Stephen Brunt on with Jeff Sammit last night talking Blue Jays.    Man it was good to hear Brunt again! It was funny to hear Brunt referred to as PTS co-host. If only that were the case!!!

Happy hump day

Hahahahahahahaha. Rusic and Harris?? You’ve GOT to be kidding me!!!! They’re setting Blundell up to fail. Normally I’d feel sorry for a guy, but….it’s
    Blundell.

Attaboy Rusic that would be a big break for him if it’s truly the case. He’s been off the air a while now leaving Sammut by himself. Maybe he will do hourly updates instead of co-hosting with Blundell… I don’t know Blundell so I can’t say who would be a good complement for him.

A month ago there was a post about Butch Carter ripping rogers ( http://torontosportsmedia.com/toronto-raptors-basketball/butch-carter-rips-rogers-radio-coverage-of-toronto-raptors/19675 ) with speculation about what would happen with Butch in the future since he frequented PTS & T&S.

I know I haven’t heard him on T&S since then, but I don’t listen to PTS. Has he been on there since? Has you heard anything from him regarding this?

Ouch. Not a George Rusic fan.

    Steve,
Butch Carter has been busy trying to get another Canadian Basketball League off of the ground. The other one, the NBL, is floundering and Butch is hoping a different business model may work. That may explain his absence from the airwaves. That said, he is doing plenty of media associated with the start up of the new league.

As for the “and Co” part of Dean Blundell, must admit I am a little surprised as both are relative unknowns, but never underestimated the power of chemistry. Guessing during test runs the fit was right. I’ve heard Rusic a few times, and he’s done a couple of profiles on our OHL TV coverage, so I cannot really opine much.

I remember when Blundell came to the Edge, Jason Barr (one of his first co-hosts) was a character called “Danger Boy” and spoke with a fake scottish accent. Todd Shapiro started as a recurring character called “Re-Todd”. Those unknowns have become known radio voices, so I would not discount this trio, if the rumours turn out to be true.

It’s pretty obvious to me what’s going on if in fact Rusic and Kayla Harris are joining Blundell, and it should be obvious to everyone else too. No one with any credibility wants to be a part of it. If you think Walker would prefer being on in the afternoon, with or without Brady, you don’t know how radio works. Walker wants out because being with Blundell could be a death knell for his career. He’s a sports guy! Blundell is a shock jock. Rusic and Harris are doing it because they have nothing to lose and a lot to gain if it works. If it doesn’t, they took one for the team but they won’t be blamed for any failure. The fact that Rogers could only get these two does not bode well for Blundell. It’s also not a good sign that there has been very little promotion of the show. I mean, these guys tell you every 20 minutes when they’re giving away something but they aren’t talking about a new morning show that starts in less than a week? I would love to hear the mock shows they’re doing…they must be truly special

George Rusic is ABSOLUTELY part of the new show. Hasn’t been on with Sammit in WEEKS or on Twitter.

Rusic is just TERRIBLE! Another Leaf hating Montreal fan. What’s the FAN590’s obsession with employing radio hosts that ALL hate the local teams?? Just embarrassing. So bad.

Dear FAN590, give the only intelligent person on your airwaves, Ben Ennis his own show NOW!

I would consider Ennis more of a baseball guy but that’s just me. And I think he does a good job. Rusic will shine in comparison to the steaming turd that is Blundell. I hope George has been brushing up on jokes about anal sex and “retards.”

I’d feel more optimistic about the show if Walker was the sidekick… the little bits I’d heard of Rusic I wasn’t impressed. I also didn’t get the sense he really knew his sports, which will be a problem with Blundell.

Is there anything more pathetic than TSN & Sportsnet hockey people complaining when NHL trades happen a week before the trade deadline instead of on deadline day during their 10 hours of coverage?…………..I am a big Duthie fan but he is guilty of that more than anybody

Who’s gonna say it? I will. Rose injury is great for #Raptors. GREAT. Never want to see great player devastated by injury but he’s not dead”

I guess if Josh Hamilton is suspended by MLB Walker will tweet about it being great for the Jays’ playoff chances. Oh, he won’t? I wonder what the difference is?

What makes Greg Zaun think Brett Lawrie would put up with the stuff he was subjected to? The day Ripkin tried anything on Lawrie would have been the day Ripkin’s iron man streak ended. Zaun is much tougher now behind a microphone. The farther away from the clubhouse the tougher he gets. Alas, when he had a chance to live up to his bogus code of machismo he ended up making Anastasia Steele look like Anderson Silva.

George Rusic can be funny, although he has a twisted sense of humour and creepy voice that might not work 5 days a week. When he and Sammut did their Sunday show after NFL games it was pretty good. And Rusic is usually more legitimately harder on the Toronto teams than everyone except Brady. And I mean really hard, not that criticsm-with-a-wink garbage that Tim and Sid have perfected.
I’ve listened to some Blundell podcasts. He seems effortlessly fluent and has a Howard Stern air about him. Of course he wasn’t talking sports….

I got to admit, and Im going out on an island here… but I like Blundell. I agree with everyone above who have pointed out that he needs a co-host that has a solid sports background. That said, Im intrigued by this experiment. I think it has potential to work well. It could also blow up in Rogers face, but whatever.

Nice going by Andrew Walker to jinx the Jays with his Derrick Rose tweet. What’s Walker favourite feel good movie, “We Are Marshall”? I guess worse things could have happened to Michael Saunders in Florida.

I’ve listened to b Ennis for the past half hour. He fn sucks. That is being nice. Other then Jackie Redmon tsn has all the top female talent, both knowledge and appearance wise. When does espn take kate b away?

  • comment-avatar

@Reggie – I don’t see what their appearance has to do with anything. Are they knowledgeable & fluid reporters / personalities is all that should matter. Or do you call your female co-workers sugartits?

I don’t mind Rusics’ delivery but his MTL Canadien shtick gets annoying after awhile. I’m curious if Sammut had the oppourtunity to go & chose not to? I always distinguished him as the A guy when him and Rusic were coupled.

Who’s Kayla Harris? AFAIK she has mainly done the 20/20 updates at random hours? She doesn’t have pedigree but we’ll see what happens.

Glad it looks like Brady/Walker are staying together although it’s going to be tough to so what T&S did 1-4.

  • comment-avatar
    Jamally 2 years

The 1-4 slot is death now. Tim and Sid are too difficult to replace and the audiences are different. So after a big Raptors game, the first 20 minutes or so was intelligent Raptors analysis. There is nothing we Raptors fans hate more than two puckheads talking about basketball, which is what Brady and Walker will bring. It’s obvious and terrible since they only talk in generalizations…and I’m sure that will transition to hockey.

What’s worse is they are taking over the slot during the march into the playoffs and the actual playoffs. Tim and Sid won’t be on the air for this. Dumb!

George Rusic is bad as bad gets. The guy must work real cheap or someone isn’t getting their money’s worth. He’s bad even for a local community cable station.

  • comment-avatar

To follow up further on my Kayla Harris comments – Looks like she is the wife of PTS Producer Ryan Walsh.

Some guests have been announced for first week of Blundell & Co – Beeston, Don Cherry, Russel Martin, Demar DeRozan etc.

Brady & Walker are now confirmed to stay together through the 1-4 timeslot.

  • comment-avatar
    Pete 2 years

I don’t get to listen from 1-4, so I’ll miss out on Brady & Walker, who were starting to carve a nice niche with me.

The lack of advertising for the Blundell show is puzzling. George Rusic of all people (supposedly) is tabbed to be his co-host? Dear goodness. That’s the best they could do? Didn’t they post the position externally too? And personally, I can’t stand Rusic’s voice.

Are Rogers and TSN on some sort of directive to hire every female talent available out there? I know nothing about Kayla Harris. They seem to be setting the show up to mimic Blundell’s show on the Edge.

A quick comment on Ben Ennis. Every time I see him on TV or listen to him, I think he should be modelling rather than doing sports radio. Ha. He’s good doing his own show or co-hosting after 7 p.m.; I don’t think he is fit for a spot before that.

I have no problem with Kayla Harris guessing she will be the update person and offer a female perspective. I like that they are hiring within, even if the program doesn’t work they might find out they have a real asset to use and gives other at the station hope.

Rusic and Harris will only be on the morning show with Blundell to laugh at loud directly into the closest microphone and repeat over and over how funny Blundell is.
Much money could have been saved by just having an intern press the laugh track button over and over.

  • comment-avatar

Agree 100%. They’re just there to laugh as hard as possible and go along with whatever DB says. Kind of like how Ken Reid is there to kiss Bob’s behind on PTS.

Rusic is up there with Geno Reda as the biggest a’hole in Toronto sports media. Well, it’s more well known about Geno, but still.
Kayla Harris is super knowledgeable and will be a great asset to the show, as will Ryan Fabro. Blundell will probably be a success on the Fan.

Listening to roundtable. First segment Bob keeps referring to how smart he is (“chess, not checkers”) by thinking the Horton contract has further trade value. He has the panel convinced that Chicago will give the leafs a 1st rnd pick for it because it buys them more cap space.

If Chicago is at 80 million next year, how does adding a 5.5M contract that doesn’t count against the cap have any value?

I’m either missing something huge here or this discussion is so far beyond ignorant that I’m having trouble comprehending it.

Article in Saturday Toronto Star Q & A with Dean Blundell.

    http://www.thestar.com/sports/2015/02/27/dean-blundell-qa-radio-host-returns-with-few-regrets.html

It says “Nothing was off-limits in Friday’s question-and-answer session. Blundell didn’t duck any questions. ”

Part way in the blurb he is quoted as saying ” I love sports. I’m a sports head. I watch the SportsCentre loop every morning.

Hahaha oh my side he is on Rogers payroll and beginning on Monday to be on air but,is quoted as saying he watches SportsCentre every morning.

Last time I turned on the TV SportsCentre was a TSN product the direct competition!!!

One can only assume Sportsnet Connected his employers product did not make the cut for his viewing pleasure.

Hahahah..great way to start a new job…Oh my side.

    Dogpounder,

The value of a contract for a player on the Long Term Injury Report (“LTIR”) is that the cap ceiling is increased by the difference between the cap hit of the player’s contract (Horton’s contract cap hit is $5.3 million) and the amount of cap room the team has. In Chicago’s case, they will have no cap space; therefore, assuming next year’s cap is $70 million, Chicago’s cap would increase to $75.3 million. Accordingly, Chicago would have fewer contracts to shed in order to get to the cap ($75.3 million) compared to their cap ($70 million) if they didn’t have Horton’s contract.

I think someone on the roundtable should have quickly reviewed how the cap is affected by the contract of a player on LTIR.

  • comment-avatar
    dogpounder 2 years

Their salary cap does not increase.

The Horton contract just doesn’t count against the cap.

There is no value in Chicago getting Horton unless TO is willing to take on a contract as rotten as Clarkson’s in return.

  • comment-avatar
    dogpounder 2 years

Sure, chicago’s cap theoretically increases 5.5M. But that would include the Horton contract counting against that number.

I think people are forgetting that Clarkson comes off the books with this trade. And they added a player who doesn’t count against the cap.

If Chicago trades a pick to the leafs for Horton, they do nothing to improve their cap situation.

  • comment-avatar
    dogpounder 2 years

Similarly, if toronto trades a pick for Horton the other night. They do nothing to improve their cap situation.

They improve their cap sit by LOSING Clarkson and adding a non-cap eligible contract.

Sorry about all the replies. I thought this was a straightforward concept that was lost on the roundtable last night.

    Dogpounder,

Follow the links below and you will see that the cap can effectively be increased by using the contract of a player on LTIR.

    Dogpounder,

My apologies; my first response was in error. The team acquiring Horton would have to be at the cap or below, including Horton’s contract, before benefitting from the LTIR relief.
