Leafs TV Mailing It In

October 18th, 2010 | by torontosportsmedia

I got stuck watching an NHL hockey game the other day on Versus. Brian Englom (who looked like one of they guys from Spinal Tap) was part of the crew with Keith Jones. I don’t recall the rest of the characters, but I was embarrassed for the guys. It was a total shit show. Minor league, bush league, B-talent, I mean it was like watching a sketch on SCTV.

Well tonight, Versus won an emmy. After watching another episode of Leafs TV anyways.

For the record, this is Toronto. We are a big city. We may not attract the top NBA players, or the top MLB players but when it comes to hockey one would think we can hire the best TV talent anywhere. Leaf fans are getting taken by the on air product.

I don’t know why those in hiring positions think that every ex-player who lives in Toronto is the next coming but man oh man does the product stink. Bob Mcgill and Brad May is the best we can do??? This is MLSE. This is the Maple Leafs. It’s not even fair to a guy like May. I mean this is his first real gig doing this….

Seriously, raise your hand if you care for 1 second where the person your are listening to or watching is from Toronto, Canada or Timbucktoo. When I am watching tv or listening to a game I want the best possible announcers regardless of where they are from or currently reside. Money shouldn’t be an object here, if the Florida Panthers have the best guy, go after him. If he’s in LA, Phoenix or Winnipeg he should be on the radar.

I don’t know why, but it appears that we in this market are taken advantage of. I think there are on air talent in this town who if they weren’t working here wouldn’t be working anywhere. I don’t care where any on air personality is from, I want people who are good. The guys doing LeafsTV aren’t that, at least not right now i my opinion.

No one should be getting their on air training in hockey in this market. Go learn somewhere else. Too many folks are learning on the job here. I just don’t get it.

The search for talent should be continent wide. Detroit, Chicago, Kalamazoo, wherever the talent is go find it please.

This isn’t just a LeafsTV thing. Our infatuation with former players seems to blind us to real talent. I mean really, Kevin Weeks on CBC???? Brad May is on Leafs TV! This doesn’t mean they aren’t good people or that they won’t become good at what they do, but please let them train elsewhere.

Instead of looking at every former player, how about we look at some former coaches or managers too. There’s enough of those guys on the sidelines looking for things to do and hell, some of them may actually have had some media training. There are those who can talk about the game who never played you know. If you need an ex-player or coach/manager to serve as an analyst then look to someone with some experience please.

Consider this an open plea for a talent upgrade. We are world class fans and we deserve better than the current offerings.

Echo the same sentiment from Waterloo.

I feel so taken advantage of – paying a fee for Leafs TV and the product they offer in return is terrible.

Last season I tried to navigate to one of the in game web features they were advertising – and they wanted MORE money from me to partake.

Please, take the pre-game show and revamp entirely, and PLEASE take Mr Millen with his “no doubt about it” to another location.

Total agreement TSM. Toronto sports teams in general (broadcaster quality, channel availablilty, etc.) do not act like they are the fifth largest market in North America.

An exception to this is Rogers who is at least arranging their media properties to try take advantage of the market size…i.e. turning Sportsnet 1 into the Jays version of the YES network in NY.

However, as always, Rogers has it bass ackwards by using the Jays to promote the station (i.e. the moving of the 25 late season games from Sportsnet Ontario to SN1 and trying to force all carriers to provide SN1), rather than using the station (like YES) to promote the team.

Rogers more likely succeeded in creating Yankee, Red Sox or Twins (the teams seen on SNO in place of the Jays games) fans from disenchanted Jays viewers.

(continued from previous post)…who still cannot get SN1.

Re Pudge: To be honest I have not even thought about SN1 since the last Blue Jays game was on…I also have the feeling I am not alone !!

I think it should be Engblom, not Englom, not sure Kevin Weeks or Brad May would mess uo like that. I’m sure that there is room in Kalamazoo for you, come back when you are ready for prime time.

I have been a subscriber to Leaf TV since day one.And have been disapointed from the beginning. The on air lack of talent is unwatchable i still can’t understand how these guys were hired in the first place.MLSE makes enough profit in other areas of thier operations that they should be able to throw some money in the direction of Leaf TV.And to make it worse some of these guys carry over the other networks when the Leafs on.That Hendricks guy might be a nice guy but come on !The face of the Leafs !I am not sure?Greg Millen is another guy i do not have much use for…He is a big let down from Harry Neal.So as the Leafs work on making the on ice talent alot better ..Lets hope they do the same on air!
