What do you do when you are trying to sell something and for the longest time there’s been mild interest? You stretch the truth a little bit, or you start to release some news that may suggest that there is activity where indeed there is none.

It’s been deadly quiet on the sale of the teachers shares of MLSE of late. There are those who believe that things are busiest when it’s quiet. The obvious alternative is that there is nothing going on and well, you get word out that some people are sniffing around in hopes that others may decide to do the same.

In other words you leak some information in attempt to create a market.

I am thinking that after months of silence that’s exactly what’s happened over the last couple of days. I wouldn’t be surprised if the ultimate source that provided the Star the info about Americans kicking the tires came from someone close to teachers themselves. Similarly, I wouldn’t be surprised if teachers is behind Gretzky admitting that he too has been approached.

Call it a hunch, but I am sensing internal leaks.

  1. I’m curious, would anybody actually feel better about another amorphous financial company owning the Leafs if they had Wayne Gretzky as a “face”?

I was wondering this today when they were talking about this on the radio… how would this change the problems that fans already have (rightly or wrongly) with the OTPP? I mean if they had Gretzky right now would people feel more faith that they “want to win”? Unless he’s actually PLAYING for the Leafs, I’m unsure why people should feel heartened that Gretzky is part of some business structure.

I mean if they keep losing and Gretzky comes out and says “no seriously, we’re trying to win”… what would that change? xD

  2. Mind you, would it really matter? Apparently we’re just expected to just accept whatever the Leafs tell us anyways and never question it. xD

“We’re not losing, we’re just suffering from losing-like symptoms.”

Wayne Gretzky’s last two ventures into pro sports ownership:
    1) The Argo’s (with Bruce McNall)
    2) The Coyote’s
…when I consider those two things (and perhaps his domestic situation), I tend to question his ability to make good choices when entering into partnerships of any kind

Sorry. but why should we take this report seriously? I did a Google search on the Toronto Star’s Rick Westhead. Stories from India and Pakistan and Afghanistan for at least 2 years? Why do I care what he reports on MLS&E???

I would also think that this market is the last place you need a friendly & familiar to sell the team to it’s fans.

  6. Have to say I agree with the above commenters. I can’t understand why the sports media is drooling over the prospect that Gretzky is involved in this somehow.

Unless we are getting the Gretzky of 1985 and he is going to strap on the skates he is of little use except to those who seem to think he is some sort of good luck talisman – which he isn’t

Wayne needs to stay home and keep his daughter from posting racy pics of herself on twitter.
