More On Demers/Landsberg

April 25th, 2010 | by torontosportsmedia

It’s late but a story in the Globe and Mail just hit my RSS reader. The story by Bruce Dowbigin is good, but it’s the byline that really caught my attention:

“TSN host brushes off senator’s anti-Semitic gaffe”

In the story Landsberg explains his long and important relationship with Demers. He says they talk “Jewish” all the time. Landsberg says that he didn’t hear the comment until after the show and he Ian offended by it.

Now, the most important part of Landsberg’s comment is when he says, it’s not for me to decide what offends people. And he is 100% right. Landsberg asked his dad and his dad wasn’t offended. As I said in my article, I wasn’t offended either.

The gist of the story I think is that Landsberg wants the world to know Demers isn’t a biggot. I think that’s fantastic. I would hate to know otherwise. Good on Landsberg for saying so. He clearly really like Jacques and given Landsberg stellar reputation that goes a long way in my irrelevant opinion.

But, and it’s big one. Demers isn’t just a hockey personailty anymore. He’s now a Canadian Senator. So when he speaks he is representing that position and this country and he should know better. It’s one thing for an idiot like me to ask, and that’s all I did was ask, if he made an anti-Semitic remark. It’s an entrely different story when the Globe and Mail claim it to be an anti-Semitic gaffe.

Whether Demers meant it or not, and I’m sure he didn’t mean it as such, it was an anti-Semitic gaffe.

I’m typing on a mobile devce, link to follow in the am.

Happy Sunday evening

I’m very glad we live in a culture that is intolerant of bigotry, racism and antisemitism. That kind of behavior should be exposed and condemned. However, I believe we also have to be careful with throwing out terms like ‘racist’ and ‘anti Semitic’. Those terms carry a lot of weight (and rightly so).

So “Whether Demers meant it or not, and I’m sure he didn’t mean it as such, it was an anti-semetic gaffe.” seems like slightly strong language to me. I think it was maybe an insensitive comment, and something fairly stupid to say on TV. But I personally, did not find it to be an anti-semetic comment. It did not seem racist or hateful or unpleasant. It just seemed like Demers was joking around with his buddy. I mean, I think we’ve all probably joked around with friends about our respective ethnicities before.

That being said, I think it is obviously your right to find it anti-semetic if that’s how you see it.

Hey Daniel. We don’t have to agree on everything. I think we can agree on a couple of things. First and foremost, their was no negative intent. Second, it was a stupid thing for a guy in Demers position to say on tv.

I agree with your article, how we talk with our friends and the knowledge of how they will take it is so different than how you talk in an interview even if you are friends with an interviewer is a totally different story. If this was two friends talking on their own time and the video/audio came out (a Jewish and non Jewish friend joking around with each other) I would understand but saying it in an interview and not knowing others can take it in very bad taste, then the ignorance is beyond belief.

The more interesting aspect for me is it really shows the quality of intelligence and integrity that actually goes into appointing a Sen. Which seems more of a buddy job or somebody who plays well for a desired riding/demo. But I guess that’s another story.

FMT: you hit the nail right on the head in my opinion. All this boils down to is smarts. Demers simply should know better than to make that comment on television.

You’re right. A really dumb thing to say on TV.
