Toronto Sports Media April’s Radio Ratings

May 5th, 2011 | by torontosportsmedia

So here are some very unofficial numbers for those who are interested in the Toronto Sports Radio scene. These are for the month of April only and are what I am told are rough estimates only.

With respect to the TSN 1050 numbers, they represent only the 12 days they were on the station. Now, keep in mind TSN went from live simulcasting of CP24 to TSN radio. Also keep in mind the way the ratings work. Ratings are captured by people meters (PPM’s). it’s a device you have to wear and it records audio every time the audio around you changes. So if you are listening to a station and flip channels it will record that change. The sample size of the PPM’s, that is the number of people in the GTA actually wearing them is small to begin with. Then take into account that we are only really considering 2 key demographics, men, aged 25-54 and men, again, aged 18-34. I don’t know what the total number of people who have PPM’s are that fit those demographics, but I am told it’s less than 200 for sure.

Having said all of that, it’s the only system we have, so it is what it is. The few times I have talked to PD’s about ratings they always tell me the same thing; it’s never about one book, it’s about the trend. As you will see, the Fan trend is good. In fact it’s very good. Having said that, 12 days does not a trend make. Are TSN numbers low? Yes. Is anyone surprised? No. If in 6-12 months they are this low then there is something to talk about.

Here are the numbers:

In the male 25-54 demographic:

Total audience share audience from 5am – 1am 7 days a week is the highest ratings Sportsnet Fan 590 has had in 2 years, this puts them 8th in the Toronto market place. They earned a 6.3 in terms of share, up from a 5.2

Brady & Lang 7 share from a 7.3

Head 2:head vs Richards for 13 days 7.1 : 1.1

Jeff Blair 6.6 from a 6.9

Vs. Bryan Hayes 7.1 : Hayes 1

Hockey Central 6.4 from a 6.8

Vs. That’s Hockey 7.8 : that’s hockey 0.5

Andrew Kryatal 5.5 from a 5.4

Vs. Dan Patrick 5.5 : DP 2.2

PTS 9.8 from a 7.9

Vs. Cybuslki & Co. 11.7: Cybulski 1.2

7pm -10pm 4.8 months up from a 2.5

Vs. Tatti 4.6: Tatti 0.7

10pm-1a 3.9 from 1.4

Vs TSN Radio 4.5 : TSN 0.1

Total audience share in that demo 590: 6 vs TSN :1

The numbers for 590 are equally as dominant in the 18-34 range

10pm 1a (18-34) 11.2

I am trying to get 640 ratings for the Watters show.

It looks like Mr. Richards has his work cut out for him if he is going to live up to this quote he made before the launch of 1050:

“My goal is not to beat the Fan 590 in the ratings, my goal is to be No. 1 in the entire demographic”

  2. mario says:

Thats a very hard goal to achieve….but hey shoot for the top…

It is a marathon, not a sprint. I say the FAN has some tough days waiting ahead. I like most of what I hear on TSN – I like Dan Patrick, didn’t think I would, but its entertaining.

It will take a while for people to decide their preferences. But the fact there is an alternative is great.

Interesting. I’d say the majority of the commenters here hated (not just disliked) Kollins moves, but overall The Fan seems to be in better shape.

I’m glad Brady/Lang, Blair and McCown are doing well – if only because I like the shows, and that probably encourages them to keep doing what they’re doing, more or less.

Not surprising that the only TSN show remotely close to The Fan was Patrick vs Krystal. It’s time to end the Krystal experiment.

As for TSN, I don’t dislike it, but I haven’t been compelled to listen too much after the first few days. Mostly because they don’t really talk Jays … And also because the one slot I dislike on The Fan is 12 – 4, but I equally don’t want to listen to Kouleas or Patrick on 1050 during that time.

Be interesting to see how it all plays out!

Listened to Cybuslki & Co last night. I am pretty sure it is called Cybuslki & Co based on the amount of times Cybuslki mentioned it was Cybuslki & Co so I am sure it was Cybuslki & Co I was listening to ;) Garth ‘behind the glass’ Wheeler is awful. His whole ‘cool guy, dude’ schtick is tiring to listen to.

  6. Rob In Aurora says:

I am pretty sure most of the changes Kollins made were decided upon without any consideration to having any competition in the market all those months ago. Now that there is some real competition, he’s got his work cut out for him. Let’s see how fast he brooms Krystal as the weakest link…

Wheeler is hard to listen to on those updates, but I find that the show is pretty strong so far based on guests and regulars vs McCown. (Repeating the show’s name ad-nauseum is important right now, they’re developing a brand).

There is not enough Jays talk on TSN generally, but having Dan Shulman as a regular is a pretty strong position to be in. They are “hockey first” right now considering the playoffs are on TV and they cover them deeper than they have in the past. I see TSN talking baseball, not just Jays when hockey’s over. TSN has game of the week on TV, but no Jays, so having general baseball discussion is in their best interest.

Having listened to Mike Richards off and on over the last few weeks (I tend to flip between his show and Brady/Lang in the morning) I now see whay Don Kollins made the initial pitch to him. I don’t find him very annoying, in fact I find his style to be a bit low-key for a morning sports show – which I don’t mind. His comedy bits are so-so, but he’s less into shock than Andrew Krystal. Krystal grated on me the first moment I started listening to him, and the sooner he’s axed the better. He’s rude, has a slightly more than superficial sports knowledge, tries too hard to be controversial and comes across as self-centred. It’s the show, stupid – and Richards seems to get it. Krystal, not so much.

If I read these right PTS went from a 7.9 to a 9.8, the only spot to actually increase despite introduction of competition.

Blair and Shannon are not my favourites so when I found out they were on together last night I flipped over to Cybuslki & Co. It was worse than a Blair interview with long meandering – uhh filled questions. It was painful! I know it is only one spot and fortunately for them the guest was strong in the answers, but if this is the level to expect – PTS should stay comfortably at these numbers.

  9. James says:

Toronto radio stations are worried to much about a national audience, then need to have more focus on the Toronto market. Since local radio had joined with satellite radio its become too watered down then need to considerate on Toronto sports. Bring people in that are Toronto sports fans also the Krystal thing will never work in Toronto, he’s to in your face and that has never worked in here.
