Themed lunch

Afternoon drive

Non sports evenings
Rules: no issues voicing your opinions, any personal attacks or insults will be deleted. Any unhelpful, predictable attacks on “talent” will be deleted too.
Happy happy long weekend

And go Jays!

  1. Neal says:

    My radio lineup:

Morning Drive – Brady & Walker
    Mornings – Bryan Hayes
Themed Lunch – Winter/Hockey – Bob Mackenzie and Nick Kypreos Summer/Baseball – Zaun, Barker, Siddall
    Afternoon – Jeff Sammut/Garreth Wheeler
Afternoon Drive – Prime Time Sports with Bob McCown and Tom Mayenknecht
Non Sports Evenings – Hazel Mae/Martine Gaillard/Jim Tatti

  2. WouldStaley93 says:

Morning Drive 530-9 Mark Hebscher Gabriel Morency and Jackie Redmond
Middays 9-12 Michael Farber And Barb DiGiulio
Hockey Lunch 12-2 Bryan Hayes Jeff O”Neill Jamie McLennan and Doug MacLean
Afternoons 2-4 Greg Sansone and Carly Agro
Drive Home 4-7 Dave Naylor and Matt Cauz
Evenings 7-11 Adam Proteau and Jim Tatti
Overnights 11-2 Tony Ambrogio and Gareth Wheeler

  3. DJ says:

Morning Drive – Brady and Walker. They are smart sports guys and can recap the night befores games very well. In the 1-4 slot we already know all the scores and their ability to break down games is wasted.

Mornings – Going of the board here to some PAST local talent – Jay and Dan. I don’t even know if their schtick would translate to radio….but worth a go.

Themed Lunch – Bryan Hayes, but with a co-host, maybe someone like Kate Beirness.

Afternoon – Tim and Sid. Again, I like Brady and Walker but I would bring back T&S I loved them in this slot.

Afternoon Drive – Bob and Brunt…EVERYDAY….None of this Brunt 40% of the time stuff. I realize this would never happen but this is my dream!

Evenings – Mack and Cauz – I think their back and forth (similar to Tim and Sid) would work well at this time of night.

I HATE single speaker talk radio. I find it much more interesting when there is a back and forth. I get that costs more money, but as a listener I think it is essential. Letting anyone babble on unchecked without recourse just isn’t as good to me.

  4. Mark says:

Sure, why not! This is a fun little thought experiment

    Morning drive: Brady and Walker.

    Mornings: Tim and Sid

Themed lunch: Between April and October, Jays Lunch with Andrew Stoten and Drew Fairservice. From after the World Series until the NHL postseason (or whenever the Leafs season ends), Leafs Lunch with let’s throw Steve Dangle in with Kate Beirness.

Afternoon: I really like the Michael Farber And Barb DiGiulio idea! So that.

Afternoon drive: Bruce Arthur, Holly McKenzie, Dave Naylor.

Non sports evenings: Roger Lajoie and Norm Rumack.

Oh, and you didn’t ask, but I’d have a 15 minute sports news program at 6pm and 11pm every night, one catching up on the news and previewing games, the other recapping the night’s events. Kind of like what 590 has right before their morning show at like 5am, but in the evening. I’d also try and work in a few weekly programs on the Raptors, Argos and Toronto FC over the weekends, too.

  5. Neal says:

Back the in day, when the Fan used to have an evening radio extravaganza called “National Sports Radio”, they used to do re-caps etc. all the time. TSN Radio does a very similar thing now in the evenings where updates are presented in and amongst the evening talk.

  6. yaz says:

    Morning drive Brady & Hayes

Mornings Matt Cauz & Andrew Walker

Themed lunch Odog & Tatti & Kypreos

    Afternoon Mackowycz & Feschuk.

Non sports evenings Non sports? Bruce Arthur

  7. Darrell says:

    Early Afternoon: Macco/Cauz
Evening Drive Home: Mark Hebscher/Bubba O’Neal
Evening: Stormin Normin Rumack/Jeff Sammut/Jim Tatti assortment

Current day – please still get rid of CBS Overnight. Heck offer the job to a guy trying to get into the business deeper on overnight. Anyone is better than Scott Farrell and his swallowed a pencil voice.

  8. alex says:

Cavaet: not all shows i would listen to personally

    Morning drive: tim and sid
    Mid day: marek and macko
    Afternoon: naylor and cauz

As always, TSM, thanks so much for the opportunity to chime in.

  10. Dave in Bolton says:

Combined Baseball/Hockey Lunch: Gregg Zaun and Don Cherry
    Afternoon: Chuck Swirsky
Drive Home: Gord Kirke, Mike Wilner (phone call based program)
Evenings: Butch Carter and Eric Smith
Overnight: the CBS package is perfect as is

  15. Trevor says:

Interesting exercise…..note able that nobody so far has put Blundell or George back on the airwaves! What would we do without George’s News?
Was surprised Kevin Barker made someone’s list and not Shi Davidi.

  16. Don Mandrie says:

Bring Mitch Melnick in from Montreal and team him up with almost anybody. He would be a most welcome fresh voice around here. And yes – more Brunt not less.

  17. dyson says:

Wheeler Nation takes over the radio late nights to put the wraps on the day’s sports news and issues.

  18. Sam says:

Now that the Blue Jays are a bit relevant again its too bad we still have stale “talent” in the radio booth. Well Joe Siddall is ok but we got spoiled with Ashby for a few years. Bring in some new guys!

  19. Brad says:

    Morning Drive- Brady and Walker

Morning- Mike Hogan and Matt Cauz

Themed Lunch- (Winter) Marek w/Friedman and Mike Johnson
    (Summer)Drew Fairservice/Ben Nicholson Smith

Afternoon-Rotate to develop new talent, using well spoken under the radar types. Drew Fairservice, Kara Wagland, Jackie Redmond, Arden Zwelling, Jonas Siegel.

Afternoon Drive- Bryan Hayes w/Brunt and Arthur

    Evenings- Sammut and Ennis

  20. Jeff says:

530-9: Andrew Walker & Ben Ennis
9-12: Bryan Hayes & Kate Beirness
12-1 Baseball: Jeff Blair w/ Cliff Floyd & Scott MacArthur
Hockey: Jim Tatti w/ Jeff O’Neill & Elliot Friedman
    1-4: Tim & Sid
4-7: Primetime Sports Bob McCown w/ Stephen Brunt & Dan Shulman
Evenings: Jeff Sammut & George Rusic

  21. rob j says:

I vote for Greycounty Mike’s lineup

  22. Marcus says:

Sorry for this sidebar, folks, but what an awesome game at the ballpark today, and what great atmosphere from the fans. I was really happy for R.A. giving 7 solid innings and getting run support .

    Okay, back to your line-ups.
Morning – Brady and Hayes. I actually don’t think that they’d work well together but it would be the perfect Type A personality fest / caffeine substitute. And throw in Bruce Arthur for expert analysis – smug meets bombastic.
AM – Blair and Mackowicz (acerbity tempered with sly humour) and/or Walker and Cauz (Western Canada meets downtown TO).
Lunch – Stellick, O’Neill and McLennan with visits from McKenzie and Lebrun
Afternoons – Tim and Sid babysat by Kate Beirness. She’ll give a confident female perspective to their humour and put away the air horn for the rest of the school day if they honk it too much.
Drive Home – Pick four of Brunt, Friedmann, Simmons, Feschuk, Mary Ormsby with Naylor as host. This covers the major sports. Bring in the Shulmans and Rovells of the sports world for interviews.
Evening – someone said it; I like it. Re-unite Tatti and Hebscher and bring in Wheeler, Hogan, etc. as needed.
Overnight- give the interns and producers a shot.

  23. MattK says:

Overnight they should play podcasts, replay stuff from earlier programs or give other people a shot, non of this CBS sports radio.

  24. Daniel says:

AM Drive: Greg Brady & Jim Richards (no idea if they’d click, but I like them individually)

Mornings: Jeff Blair & Bruce Arthur

    Afternoons: Tim & Sid

PM Drive: McCown & Brunt (no more rotating cohosts)

Evenings: Dave Naylor & Eliotte Friedman

Late Nights: Andrew Stoeten & Drew Fairservice (great suggestion above. Birds All Day podcast is excellent)

  25. Daniel says:

I’ll also add – drop CBS overnight and give some young guys a chance in those hours.

  26. Poker Guy says:

The lineup Marcus laid out is pretty bang on, The only caveat would be to possibly replace Kate Beirness with Jennifer Hedger. I like Beirness, but man she is a fast talker, and needs to slow down.

  27. Sperk says:

Some great suggestions! Here’s my stab at it:

Morning Drive – Brady and Cauz
Mid Morning – Hogan and Blair
Themed Lunch (Hockey) – MacKenzie and Pierre Maguire
Themed Lunch (Baseball) – Dan Shulman (dare to dream)
Early Afternoon – Mako, Biernes and Jackie Redmond
Afternoon Drive – McCown and Naylor (Brunt, Simmons, Arthur, Grange, Friedman in there regularly as well )
    Evenings – Hebscher and Tatti
    Overnight – Wheeler

  28. Mike S says:

Here is my two cents (I like The Dan Patrick Show but I’ll leave it out because TSM said to keep it local):

Morning drive………..Brady & Walker………seemed to work in the past so let’s go with it

Morning…………Bryan Hayes & Jeff O’Neill………..I understand why some people might dislike O’Neill but I think he’s entertaining

Noon hockey show………Duthie with Friedman and Doug MacLean………frequent appearances by Bob MacKenzie and Pierre LeBrun

Noon baseball show………..I’m not a baseball fan and I never listen to this show so I’ll say Ken Reid and Mike Wilner

Afternoon…………Tim & Sid………once again, seemed to work in the past so let’s go with it

Afternoon drive……….McCown & Brunt……….the gold standard……..if Brunt insists on taking some weeks off then Bruce Arthur would be his replacement

    Evenings……….Tatti & Hogan……….if it ain’t broke don’t fix it

Overnights………..replays of some of the daytime shows……..definitely not in favour of CBS Radio or ESPN Radio

  29. Kamlesh says:

The changes made to the layout of Sportsnet.ca greatly improves the look of the site:

    Some other things never change:

    “Florida Man ‏@_FloridaMan · Aug 1
Police Catch Florida Man Trying to Chew Off Own Fingerprints”

  30. billyjoejimbob says:

    Anyone hear PrimeTime today?

4pm segment with McCown & Friedman (in-studio) with Brunt (on-phone) was terrific. McCown and Friedman ripped each other’s Dombrowski theory at 5, but they were almost laughing as they did it. Fun to listen to.

  31. Doug Shedden says:

Early Mornings….Jim Richards & Bob Macko
    Morning…..Jeff Blair & Andrew Walker
Lunch…..Baseball-Blair and Stoeten Hockey…Andy Frost with Marek and Wyshynski
Afternoons….Tim and Sid, but only if they don’t have DJ Bennett on
    Drivetime…..McCown, Brunt, Friedman
    Evenings…..Cam Stewart, Jackie Redmond
    Overnights….Gabriel Morency

  32. Mike S says:

Bob McCown in November 2014: “I don’t want Dan Duquette to be the next president of the Blue Jays. I want a business guy running the team, not a baseball guy. I want someone like Stan Kasten”

Bob McCown in August 2015: “I’m not sure I want a business guy to be the next president of the Blue Jays. I want a baseball guy. I want someone like Billy Beane”

  33. Steve Clark says:

Mornings: Greg Brady/ Matt Cauz- wit would be sharp, knowledge excellent and dated pop culture references outstanding!

9-12- Mike Hogan and a basketball balance guy like E Smith/Paul Jones

    12-1 Themed Show- Kyper/McLean/ O’Neill and Marek
    Baseball: Blair/Barker/Hayhurst

1-4- Hayes/Walker- concern is they might be too simmilar

4-7- McCown/Blair/Brunt- Blair rotates in as host when McCown is not there and they add Friedman to mix. This would be intelligent radio

Evenings- Make it like NFL Sunday on ESPN Radio. Hosts drive the bus Jeff Sammut/Ben Ennis/Andy Mac- with live cut ins from on-scene reporters/update guy updates goals, with maybe some audio of the goal call. Kind of like NHL on the FLy/Court Surfing on Radio

  34. Matty Zero says:

    Love that evenings idea, Steve!

Now, if you put Brady and Reid in the same room, who would outdated-reference who?

  35. This is my plan for the post Bob line up

    AM Drive: Teenage Bob McCown

    Mornings: Black Bob McCown

    Afternoon: Violent Bob McCown

    Evenings: Cyborg Bob McCown

  36. Sperk says:

I thought it was interesting on yesterday’s PTS that Bob continually pushed Billy Beane as the a great candidate for the Jay’s presidency. Considering Bob’s distaste for analytics, his advocacy for Beane is a little curious…you could almost hear the disappointment in Bob’s voice when call-in guest Pat Gillick reinforced that Beane’s strengths were using deep statistical analysis and the he may struggle in a bigger market with a bigger budget.

It was weird to hear Bob choose Bean over possibly Dombrowski and then I realized that maybe Bob watched Moneyball a couple of nights ago on Netflix and based his opinion on that? Does Bob realize that Brad Pitt isn’t actually the GM of the A’s and that goof sidekick Jonah Hill isn’t going to come with him?

  37. Sam in Scarb says:

    @Sperk…FULLY agree
Sadly PTS when BOB attends is fully a 100% MAIL IN
30 odd years of great radio..
Is for the listeners kinda sad..
Yes he has takin’ Robbers for big dough (which i just love)..
Would be real nice if Bob in his 2 years left MAX
Would just suck it up and put in a real effort.

When Bob puts in a effort.
NOBODY BUT NOBODY ON THE PLANET IS BETTER on sports radio on this Planet !!

  38. @Sperk Bob used to think Billy Beane was overrated and would point out that he never won a world series whenever people would bring him up positively, but your guess actually might be accurate, because his opinion seems to have changed when he watched Moneyball at his wife’s behest. He admitted he was rooting for the As that year in the playoffs because of Moneyball, and I think he was also impressed by Beane going all in last year even though it didn’t work, I guess it showed him that Beane was capable of different ways of thinking. It is still weird listening to him advocate for Beane to be president though.

  39. Steve Clark says:

Matty: I’d give it to Brady. Reid tends to have obscure sports references, while Brady’s music taste, and TV taste tends to be more broad. I was a teenager during the 80’s and found some of Brady’s music choices were AWFUL. Lol….

They’d give each other a run for their money though!

  40. alex says:

If bob didnt watch moneyball, he presumably wouldnt know about beane’s increasingly aging daughter.

  41. William D says:

I hate the way Bob dismissed some reports from credible journalists that there is a chance that Dombrowski may be interested in Toronto for his next place of employment. Bob had no substantial input on the report he simply described the reports as “Reporters just looking to make stuff up” because they know that there will be a vacancy in Toronto. That was such a cop out statement from Bob and I’m glad Elliot shot down Bob’s criticism down of the reports. Elliot knows good reporting when he hears it, especially when it comes from credible sources. A good reporter has good sense of credible reporting. Bob might be pissed off because Beeston probably has a great idea of who his successor will be yet didn’t inform Bob and it very well may be Dombrowski. The only thing Bob said he knew about was the meeting between Rogers suits and the commissioner regarding Beestons possible replacement. Did Bob’s buddy ol pal leave him in the dark? Dombrowski departure came out of nowhere or did it?

  42. DJ says:

Just to add some clarity to things.

Why people think Bob is saying Billy Beane because of a movie that was released over 5 years ago is beyond me.

These radio host are connected to all sorts of people in sports media and within the teams themselves. Sometimes they will pick a name because it is buzz worthy, but team Presidents don’t bring all that much buzz. More than likely he had a conversation with someone who said they really like Billy Beane. Hell, Beeston might have told him he hopes Beane takes over for him.

  43. Jack says:

How come I haven’t seen ONE posting about where the heck Mike Richards of TSN Radio has been past two months. Can’t stand replacement Cauz and regular host Bastl. Is Richards ill because I can’t remember any radio host being absent off the airwaves for nearly 2 summer months.

  44. Mike S says:

McCown just said that they have invited Keith Olbermann to be PTS co-host for a week and he might have some interest…………that would be interesting

  45. William D says:

All of a sudden it looks like the Jays performance will be the saving grace for Rogers media, given that the NHL deal did not fully meet financial expectations, Jays Revenues (ticket sales, clothing, ad sales) will rocket in the coming months. Who would have ever thought.

  46. Dustin says:

Surprised nobody said a mix of mccown, brunt, Naylor and Arthur. Would easily be the best in the business. Even just Bob and Dave would be an interesting mix.

  47. Pete says:

Going to give TSN credit in the professionalism department. The last two days I’ve listened to Naylor’s show at 4, they’ve led off with the Jays and carried on the conversation through the better part of the hour. They have nothing to gain by talking up a competitor’s product, but they’re diving right in. The Fan would only slag or completely ignore a TSN property (ie. the CFL).

  48. alex says:

    While not disagreeing:

    1. Bob did have the cfl commush on today.

    2. TSN would be foolish to downplay the jays right now. I noticed Naylor called it “bsseball game night” today. So tsn is trying yto ride the wave as much as they can ehile the jays are hot.

  49. Poker Guy says:

Re: Richards absence. Yes, Mike Richards did mention that he would be away for awhile while he takes care of some health issues.

  50. Pudge72 says:

    Here goes nothing:

Morning Drive (til 9 am) – Brady & Walker with Donovan Bennett (really like his infrequent appearances on Tim & Sid…I think he is criminally underused on Rogers)

    Mid-morning – (9 to 11 am) Brian Hayes

Themed Lunch (11 am – noon): Summer – TFC / Argos (say Mon – Wed: TFC; Thur/Fri: Argos) Kristian Jack and James Sharmin (loved them on The Score) / Mike Hogan and an ex-CIS and/or CFL player like Donovan Bennett (if he didn’t do the morning show; Winter – Raptors with Matt Devlin and Jerome ‘JYD’ Williams

Themed Lunch (noon – 1 pm): Summer – Jays with Andrew Stoeten and Drew Fairservice (Birds All Day podcast is indeed, awesome!); Winter – Leafs with James Duthie or Jeff Marek with Martin Biron (have enjoyed his TV stints in the playoffs when TSN has had him)

Afternoon – Really like the previously mentioned Tim and Sid with Kate Bierness idea!

Drive Home – Dave Naylor with Steven Brunt and Elliott Friedman (bye Bob…time to put you out to pasture…tired of one segment/hour seemingly devoted to talking about your various business/recreational pursuits)

Evening – New/rising/developing talent doing a quick hit highlight package for all of the days major sports leagues and events (i.e. work in things like coverage of major golf and tennis tournaments with any live game coverage)

Late Night – Bloggers/Podcasters on Radio on rotating basis (i.e. Pension Plan Puppets / Down Goes Brown / equivalent quality Raptor blog during winter; Birds All Day – if they’re not doing lunch – and TFC during summer).

  51. Dave in Bolton says:

I wonder if Keith Olbermann would be interesting in a full time gig up here in Canada since he pretty much burnt all his bridges with American politics and sports media in the states.

  52. Daniel says:

@ Pete – It’s hard to criticize The Fan for not doing CFL talk, because I can’t imagine there’s too much appetite for it these days. If the Argos were hot, and The Fan still ignored them, then you might have a point.

  53. WestDale Rocks says:

GREAT topic! First, call ins would be banned on my station. None. Ever. All interviews or banter all the time.
Second, honourable mention goes to Brady & Walker. They’re good as well. On my station, however, there would be no place for Blunder, Sammut, Cauz, Macko, Blair, Richards or Bastl. Sorry. No personal attacks. They’re just not good enough, IMHO.
MORNING DRIVE: Naylor and Elliotte Friedman
    MORNING: Tim & Sid
THEMED LUNCH: Bob McKenzie, Jeff O’Neill, James Duthie
AFTERNOON: Jack Armstrong & Chuck Swirsky
AFTERNOON DRIVE: McCown and Brunt. No other co-hosts. Just those two–it’s the only time the show is listenable.
NON SPORTS EVENINGS: Tatti and Hogan
OVERNIGHT: Roger Lajoie. In the past 5 years or so, Lavoie has become quite listenable on weekends. The guy is never going to be a megastar. But he’s quite knowledgable about hockey, doesn’t take many calls and does a lot of interviews.

  54. WestDale Rocks says:

Hahahaha. I actually DID mean to write “Blundell”, but spell check made it “Blunder”. Not intentional.
