Lunch Time Radio & TSM Game of the Night

Was busy at lunchtime, here is the game of the night…

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
The lone matinee in the majors today features the Blue Jays trying to avoid the sweep in the Bronx. Ricky Romero, the lone bright spot in the Jays’ rotation of late, gets the call. He’s pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings en route to winning his last three starts. Andy Pettitte will start for the Yankees.
Though Toronto center fielder Vernon Wells is hitting a meager .251 this season — and hovering around the Mendoza Line at .219 in his last nine games — he has had success against Pettitte, with a .395 lifetime average.

Later tonight, Cincinnati travels to Philadelphia in what could turn into a pitchers’ duel between two of the game’s best young talents. Johnny Cueto (8-4, 2.69 ERA) and Cole Hamels (4-5, 4.98) get the ball for the Reds and Phillies, respectively. The Phillies are back on track, having swept the rival Mets over the weekend, while the Reds are only three games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central.

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
t’s semi-finals time at Wimbledon and the ladies lead it off. Huge match on centre court with number one ranked Danira Safina battles number three ranked Venus Williams. There is no love lost between the Williams sisters and Safina. Sister Serena has been very vocal questioning why Safina is number one and still hasn’t one a major. For Safina this is the farthest she has gone at Wimbledon and would love nothing more then to face Serena in the finals.

In the CFL, the new-look Winnipeg Blue Bombers make the trip to Edmonton to tangle with the Eskimos tonight. Not only does Winnipeg have a new coach in Mike Kelley, but they overhauled entire roster. Gone is one-time starting quarterback Kevin Glenn and stepping in is Stephan Lefors. Oh yeah, future hall-of-famer Milt Stegall hung up his cleats as well. Edmonton also made some changes since missing the playoffs for the first time in 35 years. Richie Hall is now at the helm and hopes a healthy Jesse Lumsden will factor in to the Eskies success.

On Leafs Lunch:

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
It’s Canada Day today and everybody knows what that means right? Well if you’re in the city of Toronto it means canceled celebrations and the smell of garbage, but everywhere else it’s the opening day of the CFL. In Calgary the Stampeders will get a chance to exact some revenge over the Grey Cup loss as they host the Montreal Alouettes. In Hamilton it’s the battle of rookie coaches as Bart Andrus and the Toronto Argonauts make the trip down the QEW to take on Marcel Bellefeuille and his Tiger-Cats.

Oh, and it’s the first day NHL teams can shop for free agents….

More all day long

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
Who would have thought the number one team in baseball would be the Los Angeles Dodgers. They started out on a torrid pace with Manny Ramirez in the line up. When Manny got his 50-game timeout, LA was expected to tumble. Contrary to popular belief they have kept on winning. Juan Pierre has stepped up in absence of the dread-headed slugger. Last season Pierre was thought to be another big-contract bust. This season in only 69 at-bats, he’s averaging .329, with 27 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. It’ll be interesting what the Dodgers do with Pierre when Ramirez returns on July 3rd. Tonight LA hosts the division-rival Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers took game one in dramaic fashion. Andre Either hit a walk-off two run homer in the 13th inning, giving LA a 4-2 win. Game two will feature a good match on the mound, Dodger Chad Billingsley (9-3) battles Jason Marquis (9-5).

The Toronto Blue Jays welcome the Tampa Bay Rays for their first visit to the Rogers Centre tonight. Amazing news for the Jays, as Roy Halladay (10-1) will make his first start since straining his groin. A win tonight and Doc will be the first 11 game winner in the majors. Tampa has been hot as of late. They’ve won five straight and are third in the American League East one game ahead of Toronto.

A couple intriguing games oversees at Wimbledon. On centre court it will be a French Open rematch as Roger Federer battles Robin Soderling. On the women’s side number three-seeded Venus Williams faces former number one Ana Ivanovic.

Even though we are months away from the opening camp and even further from the start of the regular season, all eyes will be on Montreal this evening to see who goes where in the NHL Entry Draft. Will John Tavares, Victor Hedman or Matt Duchene be the number one pick? What will the Canadian teams do? A big trades may still the show. Rumours are a plenty about possible moves involving Dany Heatly, Vincent Lecavalier, Jay Bouwmeester and Chris Pronger. The draft is arguably the biggest day for most NHL teams in realizing Stanley Cup dreams-just ask this years champs the Pittsburgh Penguins.

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
It’s pretty rare for a game involving the Washington Nationals to be considered the game of the day, but today is an exception. John Smoltz makes his Boston Red Sox debut in the last game of their three game set. Smoltz is the only pitcher in major league history to win over 200 games and have over 150 saves. Smoltz knows the Nationals well. Last season, while pitching with the Braves Smoltz struck out Washington’s Felipe Lopez to become the 16th member of the 3000 strikeout club. Flame thrower Jordan Zimmerman (2-3) gets the call for the Nats.

Game two of a three game set between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cincinnati Reds goes tonight at the Rogers Centre. Scott Richmond (5-4) get the start for the Jays. Richmond’s set a career high in his last start, strucking out 11 Phillies en route to a 7-1 Toronto win. Bronson Arroyo (8-5) gets the call for the Reds. Toronto’s Scott Rolen has thrived in the four spot. He’s eighth in the league with .332 batting average. Richview Collegiate alum Joey Votto leads the Reds. Votto returned to the line-up last night and looks to keep leading his crew. He’s batting .354 with eight homers and 33 RBIS.

t’s a repeat of last season’s World Series as the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Tampa Bay Rays i the first of a three game set. Unlike last postseason, the Phillies limp into this one losers of their last six, getting back-to-back broom treatments by the Blue Jays and Orioles. The Rays come in on a two game winning streak taking two of three from the Mets. The starting pitchers in this one are on opposite ends of their careers. Father-time Jamie Moyer (4-6) toes the rubber for Philly and rookie David Price (1-1) gets the call for Tampa. With homerun and RBI leader Raul Ibanez on the 15-day DL, the Phillies hope slugger Ryan Howard is over the flu and back in the line-up.

Whether you like golf or not, you do not want to miss the opening round of the US Open at Bethpage Black. Tiger Woods looks to repeat as champion, but this time with the use of both of his legs. Phil Mickelson would love to win for his wife. Mike Weir won the Masters in similiar type conditions, but Augusta is no Bethpage Black. This course is extremely long and it looks like it’ll be wet, setting up for a difficult time for anyone looking to win the silver trophy.
