Sportsnet Hit’s One Out Of The Park

buck martinez autograph Sportsnet Hits One Out Of The Park

I know I can sometimes be too in love with nostalgia, however this time it’s different. Rogers Sportsnet’s hiring of former Toronto Blue Jays player, manager and broadcaster Buck Martinez is nothing short of a homerun for fans of the ball club. Where hiring of Cito, and trying to bring back others from better days was cheered in this corner, the reality is, for the most part it was nothing more than an attempt to sell tickets to a team in dire need of a boost in revenue column.

This, however is different. Martinez is good at what he does and is not simply being hired to draw fans cause we used to like him. His tenure as manager wasn’t overly positive and therefore his hire should be viewed on the merits as hiring a good analyst for the product that has been badly missing since he left.

We (or at least me) are usually quick to slam the locals for that which they have done, this time they deserve all the credit.

J.P. Ricciardi’s Five Year Plan- Fact or Fiction

lgpp31059+vincent vega and jules winnfield pulp fiction poster J.P. Ricciardis Five Year Plan Fact or Fiction

So there seems to be some confusion with respect to J.P. Ricciardi’s accountability for words he may or may not have said with respect to when his team would win. Many J.P. haters refer to the J.P “5 year plan”. The common theory is that J.P said that the team would win in five years (from the point he made the comment). Now, semantics aside, those, especially one on the radio, seem to be of the belief that he never said such a thing, and instead it is an urban myth. I say semantics because, I think we can all agree that those who say he didn’t in fact say it aren’t referring to the use of the specific words ” I have a five year plan”. The point is, did J.P. ever refer to a year in the future in which his team would win or be competitive? The answer is yes. It is no urban myth:

“”We could win next year, we could be in position to make some moves to expedite this process. But realistically you’re looking at 2005.”

That was a quote in the Toronto Star on September 4, 2002 by J.P. Ricciardi. So it wasn’t really a 5 year plan, it was shorter. It was later extended. The funny thing is that CNNSI.com wrote about the quote a few days after it was made as part of a piece singing J.P’s accolades:

“So who will be the next AL team to show us how a team should be rebuilt on the cheap?

The guess in this corner is the Toronto Blue Jays, ranked 21st in this week’s Baseball Power Rankings. And it may not take them nearly as long as it did the A’s and Twins.

At 80-82, their first losing campaign in four years, the Blue Jays were a long way from horrible last year under rookie manager Buck Martinez. But when they stumbled to a 20-33 start this season, new general manager J.P. Ricciardi didn’t hesitate. He canned Martinez and replaced him with third base coach Carlos Tosca.

The transformation has been remarkable. The Jays are 48-48 since Martinez was fired, 34-29 since the All-Star break. Two weeks ago, they took three out of four from the Yankees in New York. A six-game winning streak ended Sunday with a 7-4 loss to Tampa Bay. ”

It seems so long ago that J.P was the boy wonder doesn’t it? The Jays were almost the talk of the town again. J.P. was the next young bright GM….

“A big question is whether Ricciardi will be around to see it. He’s a native of Worcester, Mass., and despite his contract, speculation is rampant that he’ll take over as general manager of the Boston Red Sox before next season.

But even if Ricciardi is pulling the strings at Fenway Park in 2003, it appears he’s laid a solid foundation for the Blue Jays’ success. ”

If only we should have been so lucky….

In any event. Semantics aside, there is proof that in fact, J.P. did look into his crystal ball and predict success down the road, first 4 years then 5. Did he call it a 4 year plan or a 5 year plan? Maybe not in those exact words, however we all got the point. Now, the easy thing to say is which GM doesn’t point to a time in the future and try to predict success? That, my friends isn’t the point here. The issue isn’t should he have said it, the point is he DID say it.

Who are Top 10 Blue Jays Of All Time

top10 Who are Top 10 Blue Jays Of All Time

The National Post had a great article asking just that today. It doesn’t look like we are going to be buying World Series tickets here anytime soon, hell we aren’t going to be buying baseball playoff tickets anyime soon, forget world series tickets. So with the Blue Jays reunion tour coming to town it’s as a good a time to reflect on the great Blue Jays teams of yesteryear and ask who are the top 10 Blue Jays of all time? That’s not an easy question, considering there have been some greats. Remember the task isn’t your favorite, so no votes for Cliff Johnson (who happened to be on of my all time favorites) or Luis Leal, Otto Velez, Domiso Garcia etc. Here is the list the post puts forward:

Robbie Almoar
Roy Halladay
Dave Stieb
Carlos Delgado
George Bell
Tony Fernandez
Joe Carter
Jimmy Key
Tom Henke (great game terminator)
Tie for last between Vernon Wells (stop laughing) and Pat Henrgen.

So obviously the caveat is that they must have played meaningful parts of the careers for the Jays to count. I am not a stats guy so I can’t tell you a guys career average, number of wins or any of that stuff. There are some names I am surprised about having not made the list, Kelley Gruber is one, Barfield, and Moseby are others too. Is my memory poor but didn’t Duane Ward have a pretty damn good career here too? although he didn’t play foerver, Pat Borders had a damn impressive career. Also behind the plate, Ernie Whitt and Buck Martinez. Iorg and Martinez too.

So Jays fans, there isn’t a whole lot we can count on looking forward, so let’s look back. Instead of buying this years playoff tickets or buying world series tickets, who are your top 10 of all time??

Sports Ramblings Before Heading Home

German2 Sports Ramblings Before Heading Home
Evening from Berlin. Sad to say, despite my best efforts, I failed to find Berezin. In fact, it was impossible to find the existence of hockey in these parts at all. I can assure it wasn’t for lack of looking.

I just read a really good article by Jim Kelley. Yes you read that correctly. His take on the Berger affair is good. It is fair and balanced. Kelley sees Berger’s point in asking the question he asked and also accepts that Berger didn’t mean to question Wilson’s integrity in so asking the question. I don’t buy that at all, but so be it. I think Berger knew exactly what he was doing. He was trying to elicit a response from the coach and I have to believe he is happier then a pig in shit to be getting this type of attention. Kelley also sees Wilson’s point. He concludes that both guys were just doing their jobs. I think that is true too. Both have reputations and both have egos. Both also have jobs to do. Good work on the part of Kelley.

I need a microscope to read his blog, but Brady has a good take on the Berger episode too. I like this part the best, check it out for yourself though :

“Anyway, Berger likes to poke and prod and if injected with the truth serum, has wanted a public blow-up such as what happened last night for some time. It’s a wonder it took nearly 70 games.”

Leafs vs the bolts tonight…A game for the ages. Not staying up to watch that tonight. Too tired and I have to get up too early. Is my man LT playing the point for the Buds yet? One more injury and he may get the call.

Does anyone else find it funny how reporters from one outlet refuse to name a reporter from another? I am sure someone is going to tell me why they do it, or the reasons why they do it, however, it sounds funny as hell. Case in point:

“Leafs coach Ron Wilson got into it with a radio reporter following the game, suggesting that the radio guy had questioned his integrity. The radio guy didn’t see it that way. ”

That from Steve Buffery’s article in today’s Sun. Now, everyone reading that knows he is talking about Berger. There is no mystery here. Why, not just say the name? By the way, Berger gets a lot more attention on Hanky’s site then he does from the radio gig, shouldn’t he be referred to as a blogger as opposed to the radio guy? The National Post handled it differently, referring to Berger by name but also stating that he contributes (if you can call his work a contribution) to the paper. The Post does a nice job of transcribing the whole episode and even placing a link to a video from youtube. You can read it here

Interesting that both Mike Toth and Jeff Blair absolutely roasted Ernie Whitt for his managing of team Canada in the WBC, saying that he actually did a worse job of managing then Buck Martinez. Fan post game guy Mike Wilner however didn’t see it that way…”Ernie Whitt is going to take a lot of heat for this, and may not even be back as the manager of Team Canada in the future, but don’t put this on him.” Whose opinion you going to go with??? I thought so. Is it true that the game only drew 12,000 fans Monday night to the TED??? If so, paint me stunned. I wonder if game 2 of the regular season of the TBJ will see a similar drop in attendance. One last thing on Wilner, I may not be a big fan, but I give him credit, he responds to most comments on his blog. That shows class and professionalism. People take time to comment and does the same by responding. Good on you Mike.

Ummmm, not that anyone appears to care, but the Raptors are currently the 4th worst team in the league. You read that right. 4th from the bottom! They have lost 6 in a row and are a very respectable 2-8 in their last 10. Raptor fan, whomever and wherever you are, I feel for you. A bad team, with what looks like no reason for hope… Someone smarter then me tell me if the current coach gets extended. With the team this bad, are they going to sell any season tickets next year? The Detroit Pistons announced a 10 % reduction on tickets for next year…hint hint….. No back to your regularly scheduled programming.

More tomorrow when I land back in Toronto.
