Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

college of sports media banner Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

The Toronto Raptors have lost three straight and the last seven of nine. Tonight they welcome Gilbert Arenas and the Washington Wizards to the ACC. Arenas has been dealing with numerous ankle injuries and has missed the last seven games against the Raps. While injured Arenas was very vocal about the possibility of Raptor’s guard Jose Calderone being included on the all star team. Check out his blog here: http://www.wonderday.ca/2008/02/14/gilbert-arenas-disses-jose-calderon/ Washington’s last game was on Saturday night when they lost to the Charlotte Bobcats 92-76. Arenas scored six points and was held to under ten points for the second consecutive game. On Sunday, the Raptors’ defensive futilitycontinued. They were smoked 113-94 by the Phoenix Suns. Adding to Toronto’s woes was a brutal 1 for 20 performance from behind the arc. Chris Bosh was the lone bright spot. He poured in 30 points and pulled down 17 boards.

On the ice, the NHL’s oldest rivalry continues as the Toronto Maple Leafs are in Montreal to take on the Canadiens. This is a huge week for the Montreal franchise. On Friday the team will celebrate their 100 year anniversary. Both teams are coming off loses. The Leafs were shut out 3-0 by the Buffalo Sabres, while the Habs lost 4-3 in the shootout to the Washington Capitals.

Line Up: Leafs v. Sabres

Can the boys make it three in a row?  A nice streak and getting to .500 before Christmas would be fantastic considering how the season started.

Mike Komisarek is back in the line-up…Hard-luck Finger finds his usual seat in the team box along side Exelby and Wallin.  Toskala is feeling better but needs more hard practices before Wilson will put him back in.

Someone Get David Shoalts A New Headline Writer

60sbats 2 Someone Get David Shoalts A New Headline Writer

Had Brian Burke taken over the Leafs gig two summers ago, then his second offseason would be worth evaluating. Attempting to evaluate Burke today on his one year anniversary is nuts. I mean, the guy may fail, and he may fail miserably, but come on. He started a year ago, just over a quarter into the season. He has had 1 draft and one free agency, one trade deadline, and we are going to write a story entitled “Jury Still out on Burke”. One friggin year and you are drawing conclusions like that? The problem is the article by David Shoalts of the Globe and mail is only bad because it says NOTHING. The title is brutal and totally misleading.

“One of the things Brian Burke promised when he took over as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs was a sea change from the country-club atmosphere that settled over the team in previous years.

With the Burke era officially beginning its second year today with a game against the Buffalo Sabres, opinions are divided about the success of his first year – but most of the critics agree the players work much harder than they did in the past. However, no one should take that as a sign that a change in culture is complete.

True culture change, say those who took on the burden of doing it, takes years, sometimes more than a decade to complete. It takes a lot more than getting rid of a few lazy players who may be a bad influence on their teammates and bringing in some hard-workers.”

Rise your hand if you are care where the Toronto Maple Leafs are after his first year, or after his 5th or 6th. Who is going to spend the time and evaluate him at this point of the season. Let’s at least give him until the end of this season don’t you think?

““If you’re looking at the change to an elite team, it was probably 10 years,” Holland said. “But if you’re talking about going from what was the worst team in the world, as it was in 1985, to a playoff team, then you could say five years.””

Exaclty! So why even bother writing the article in the first place? I mean, if that is the gist of the article, and it is, then why bother. Shoalts makes all the arguments on why these takes time…5 to ten years in some cases, and yet the headline is that jury is out? What did people expect? Burke himself said this was going to be a long process.

“The key to success with youth, Holland said, is patience. That is an issue in Toronto, given defenceman Luke Schenn’s struggles in his second NHL season.

“The odd 18-year-old kid can change the fortunes of your team, but they’re named Gretzky and Lemieux,” Holland said. “For most of them, it takes a long time.

“People think next year you’re going to be twice as good, which is unrealistic. You go home for the summer and think you made it after your first year, plus your buddies are telling you, too. So, it is not until your second off-season that you hit the gym a lot harder than you did after the first year.”

I love that the Red Wings are again the blueprint of success. No one ever would have guessed that this would be the model of success years back. I remember when they were giving away cars at the JLA in attempt to get people to come to the arena. If they are the model, then shouldn’t others be afforded the same time to follow it? Let’s see Burke try to draft the same way Illitch’s team did and then we can talk right?

““We’ve got the work ethic, no one can say we don’t,” he said. “But we don’t have the talent like a team like the Red Wings. We don’t have a leader here who is out there doing the right thing all the time, a genuine Stevie Yzerman or Nicklas Lidstrom.

“[Yzerman] wasn’t regarded as a leader until he was about 10 years into his career. He got the captaincy early, but it was Scotty Bowman who basically brought it out of him and that took three or four years. That’s why if it’s Luke Schenn for us, it’s going to take three or four years.”

Exactly the point. So why the headline, and the intro to the article? Shoalts hit a homerun on the Coyotes. On the Leafs he seems to be striking out an awful lot lately.

Talk to you from Las Vegas

Ex Maple Leaf Of The Day Gets Gig

dominic moore Ex Maple Leaf Of The Day Gets Gig

Dominic Moore, who had to have had the worst summer of anyone I know, has apparently found a home. Brian McCabe and the Florida Panthers have signed Dom. Details of the deal haven’t even been rumored yet. Let’s see just how much Dom and his agent Larry Kelly blew it by not taking Burke’s last offer pre-deadline last year…. Good luck Dom- make sure Caber introduces you to the host at Joe’s Stone Crab, waiting in line there can be a bitch.

The Season Ahead: WHL

whl map ev The Season Ahead: WHL

Part two of our three-part trip through the CHL will see us head west for a look at the season ahead in the Western Hockey League. Last season saw the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires end the WHL’s two-year reign as home of the Memorial Cup champions (the Vancouver Giants in 2006 and the Spokane Chiefs in 2007), and WHL teams will surely be looking to take the Cup back this year.

Still licking their wounds from a loss to Windsor in the Memorial Cup final, the 2008-09 WHL champion Kelowna Rockets have not fared much better in the offseason following the defeat. The Rockets have lost Jamie Benn (Dallas Stars), Colin Long (Phoenix Coyotes), and Michael Backlund (Calgary Flames), the team’s top three play-off scorers, to their NHL clubs. For Kelowna, hope for a return to the Memorial Cup comes in the form of 6’7” defenceman Tyler Myers, who Slam! sports referred to as “the Zdeno Chara of the WHL.” However, even his return to the team is a question mark, depending on his performance during training camp with the Buffalo Sabres.

Also watching NHL training camp battles with interest are the Vancouver Giants. Already reeling from the graduation of reigning scoring champ Casey Pierro-Zabotel, the Giants are specifically focused on the Atlanta Thrashers’ camp, where 2009 first round draft pick (fourth over-all) Evander Kane is looking to crack the big club. On the bright side, Vancouver has brought in former NCAA standout Kevin Connaughton to help form a solid core with new go-to forward Lance Bouma and up-and-coming defenceman David Musil. The team is heavy on intangibles after falling victim to the Rockets in the conference final despite going in as the No. 1 seed.

With conference front-runners Kelowna and Vancouver struggling with player personnel issues, the Western Conference could be ripe for the taking on the part of an opportunistic underdog and the Prince George Cougars could fit the bill. The Cougars boast a rising goaltending phenom in Michael Salmon and, most notably, scoring phenom Brett Connolly. The left winger’s 30-goal campaign last season as a 16-year-old caught the attention of many observers and helped him secure a No. 5 ranking in TSN’s top 10 prospect list for the 2010 draft. TSN’s Bob McKenzie called Connolly “a smooth and polished offensive performer who plays the game with a great deal of confidence.”

The Eastern Conference champion Calgary Hitmen were so flush with firepower last season that even losing a few of their top scorers should not diminish the team’s status as an offensive powerhouse. The Hitmen, who scored a WHL-high 330 goals and boasted three of the top eight leading scorers last season, will welcome back league leading scorer Brandon Kozun, bruising wingers Ian Schultz and Kris Foucault, and power play quarterback Michael Stone. Two games into the 09-10 season, Tyler Fiddler appears primed to step into an offence-oriented role with the Hitmen, already collecting four goals and an assist.
Breathing down the neck of the Hitmen are the Saskatoon Blades, who finished second to Calgary in the 2008-09 conference standings and return seven of their top eight scorers. These players include Saskatoon’s top three scorers from a year ago, Derek Hulak, Milan Kytnar, and Walker Wintoneak. On the defensive end, the Blades return Stefan Elliott and Teigan Zahn, as well as Finnish puck mover Jyri Niemi who, as Newsday.com notes, “has quickly become a crowd favorite in [two seasons] largely for his big shot and enthusiastic goal celebrations.” The team’s biggest question mark will come in between the pipes, where inexperienced Adam Morrison will be called on to backstop the Blades in just his second WHL season and first as a starter.

Though Kelowna and Vancouver have plenty to lose as they see their star players vie for NHL jobs in training camp, perhaps no team has more on the line than the Brandon Wheat Kings, who have to be considered the wild card in the East. Conference finalists last season, the Wheat Kings could see 2009 first round draft picks C Brayden Schenn (No. 5, Los Angeles) and RW Scott Glennie (No. 8, Dallas) depart. Yet, if they both return, Brandon quickly becomes a team to watch this year. If Schenn and Glennie stick with their NHL clubs, look for 30-goal scorer Jay Fehr to become the offensive focus. On the blue line, Florida Panthers draft pick Colby Robak is coming off a 42-point campaign and should take the reins on the powerplay.
