College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
We’re coming to the midway point of August and that means that teams are battling for position in their respective playoff runs. In the National League the race for the Wild Card spot is boiling down to a five team battle. The Rockies and Giants are tied at the top and Cubs sits in the third spot trailing by only two and a half games. The Marlins swept the reigning World Series Champion Phillies and moves into the four spot a half game behind Chicago. While the Braves put the brooms to LA and sits a half game back of Florida. SO every series from here on in becomes that much more important.

Tonight Colorado is looking to put some distance between themselves and the third-seeded Cubs. Colorado laid the bats to the Chicago last night in a 11-5 victory and have taken two games so far in the series. Game four goes tonight with Jorge De La Rosa (9-8) getting the start for the Rockies. Lefty Tom Gorzelanny (4-1) gets the ball for Chicago.

The Florida Marlins hope they can ride their three game winning streak into a spot atop the Wild Card standings. The Marlins may set the sites a little higher like the top of the National League East. They trail Philly by only four games. Tonight Rick VandenHurk (1-1) starts for Florida in the first of three against the visiting Astros. Houston counters with former Marlin Brian Moehler (7-7).

It looks the San Francisco Giants may have no choice but to win the Wild Card in order to make the playoffs. Unfortunately for them the number one team in the NL, the Los Angeles Dodgers, are in their division and seem to be running away with it. The Dodgers may be coming back to the pack. Since being swept by Atlanta their lead has dwindled to five and a half over the Giants and the Rockies. The Giants could rope the Dodgers in even further. They Giants host the Dodgers tonight. Jonathan Sanchez (5-9) starts for the hometown Giants. Hiroki Kuroda (4-5) goes for LA.

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
The grass has been laid, the practise was televised and there’s nothing left to do but let them play. It’ll be an electric night tonight at BMO Field as Toronto FC takes on Real Madrid of the Spanish Premier League.

It would be safe to say that Real Madrid was the biggest wheeler-and-dealer over its offseason and there was no bigger deal then the acquisition of superstar and reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, Cristiano Rinaldo. Without a sniff of any type of trophy in the last four of six season the spending didn’t stop there for Real Madrid. They also signed 2007 Player of the Year and Brazilian attacking midfielder, Kaka away from AC Milan. To top if off they added Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa from Liverpool and French striker Karim Benzema. In total, Real Madrid spent over 250 million euros on these five players in hopes that their additions help the team win the Primera Division, the Cope Del Ray and ultimately the UEFA Champions League. Unfortunately for Real Madrid they felt the sting of watching bitter rival Barcelona pulled off the trifecta last season and want to make sure that doesn’t happen this season.

For Toronto FC, although they have the chance to play against arguably the best team in the World, their focus needs to be on their standings in MLS league play. TFC hasn’t had a win since July 11, a stretch that’s included a lose, two ties and an unsuccessful home-at-home CONCACAF play with the Peurto Rico Islanders. The Reds have dropped to fourth in the division, 6 points behind the leading Columbus Crew. On the 15th of this month they’ve got an enormous battle with DC United who FC only trails by one point. The experience of playing internarional teams has value, but Toronto only has 10 games remaining and a trip to their first ever postseason would be priceless.

With roughly 65 games left in the MLB season tonight’s battle in the Bronx may end up being the deciding factor on who reigns supreme in the American League East.

In one corner you, wearing white with blue pinstripes, you have the New York Yankees. Winners of there last three and the top team in the division. The season started off poorly for the Yanks, but since the return of Alex Rodiguez from hip surgery one could argue that this New York team is the best offensive team in the league. In only 272 at-bats, A Rod has pounded 19 home runs and driven in 60. This season things are different for Rodriguez, he’s not expected to shoulder the offensive load. helping him out is Mark Teixeira. Teixeira has been everything the Yanks wanted out of him. He leads the team with 27 long balls and 80 RBIs.

In the other corner, wearing grey accented with red lettering, are the Boston Red Sox. Boston limps in this one, loser of their last two games (thanks to the Tampa Bay Rays) and without one of their number one guy. Jason Bay, the man responsible for making Manny Ramirez nothing but a distant memory to the Bo-Sox faithful, has re-injured a hamstring injury and may be available for the final game of the series. Bays bat will be missed in the line up. He leads the team with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs. Tonight will be the first time that newly-acquired Victor Martinez gets his first taste of this bitter division rivalry.

So round one has John Smoltz (2-4) facing off against Joba Chamberlain (7-2). Gentlemen I want a fair fight, listen for the whistle and may the best man win.

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
It’s been two years since the Colorado Rockies shocked Major League Baseball by finishing a league best 20-8 in September to earn and postseason spot and eventually their first ever appearance in the World Series. Even though they went on to lose in four games to the Boston Red Sox, the future looked bright for this young franchise. Fast forward two seasons and a lot has changed with this club. Although many of the players from that play off run are gone (Matt Holliday, Kaz Matsui and manager Clint Hurdle) and the team has suffered some key injuries to their pitching staff (Jeff Francis), the Rockies are on top of the NL Wild Card, a half game up on the San Francisco Giants. They’ve won five straight, including an 8-3 beating of the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies last night. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki looks like he’s returned to his Rookie of the Year form. In 2007 when he won the coveted award he hit .291 with 24 home runs and 99 RBIs. This season he’s batting .270 with 20 long balls and 52 driven in. First baseman Todd Helton has bounced back from a disappointing 2008 as well. This season Helton already has more at-bats and is batting 51 points higher with four more homers.

Tonight is game two against Philadelphia in the City of Brotherly Love. Winning their sixth in a row will be tough for the Rockies they face the man that was coveted by the Blue jays, lefty J.A. Happ (7-2). Colorado’s gives the ball to Jorge De La Rosa (9-7). De la Rosa has been on a streak of his own. He’s won a franchise-record seven straight and will need to win his first ever over the Phillies if he wants to extend his streak to eight.

Although most the hype surrounding Toronto FC is geared towards Friday’s tilt with Real Madrid, you can be sure that the players and coaches have one game of their minds. Tonight the team is in Peurto Rico for the CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round Second Leg versus the Islanders. Last week the Reds dropped a 1-0 heart-breaker to Islanders in front of a rowdy hometown crowd. If the Reds come away from this one with a victory of at least a two goal difference they would qualify for Group play for the first time in TFC history. This game is also a homecoming for Toronto defender Marco Velez. He’s the captain of the peurto Rican National Team.

Okay let’s face it there are a bunch of baseballs games and there’s a big battle in the CFL with the struggling BC Lions taking on the surprising Hamilton Ti-Cats (including the debut of Arland Bruce in the gold and black), but how can anyone look past the fact that today is the trade deadline in MLB? I’m not even going to try and compare this day with the hockey version of this day, because it’s not the same. There’s one enormous reason why today is worthy of the GOTD and it boils down to what is going to happen to Roy Halladay. Will he remain a Blue Jay until the end of this season? Will he end up going to a play off contending team in return for a some prospects? If anything today will also prove the worth of general manager J.P. Ricciardi. Today and what happens with Doc could make or break his entire legacy. It was presumed Halladay would be heading to Philly. There have been rumours about the Red Sox, Yankees and Rangers. We will just have to wait and see.

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
The two teams that have done the most at the trade deadline play the first of three starting tonight in the City By the Bay. The reigning World Series Champions, the Philadelphia Phillies, pulled off a huge trade acquiring last seasons AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for four top prospects. There were several rumours surrounding the Phillies and the Toronto Blue Jays, but its seems the asking price for Jay ace Roy Halladay was too steep for Philadelphia.

Their opponents this evening, San Francisco Giants, have little to no chance of catching the NL West division leading Dodgers, so making changes to keep on top of the wild card race will be their only way of getting into post season play. Like the Phillies, the Giants pilfered a bottom-dwelling Indians team, swapping a left-handed pitcher for first baseman Ryan Garko. Keeping up with the trend of preying on crap teams, the Giants also picked up second baseman Freddy Sanchez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a right-handed pitcher The Giants sure seem to have a steady flow of young pitching and are willing to improve their team by trading them. (Maybe you should take note J.P. Ricciardi).

Rodrigo Lopez (3-0) gets the start in tonight’s match up for Philadelphia. San Francisco turns to Jonathan ‘No-hitter’ Sanchez (3-9). Garko is already in San Frans line up, while Sanchez will be out for a couple days with an inflammation in his left knee. Lee on the other hand may gets his first start in a Philly uniform in game three of this series. His opponent, last seasons NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
Well for the hump day edition of GOTD we are going to head to the pitch at BMO Field where Toronto FC is set to battle the Puerto Rico ‘Too Bad Its Not The New York Version’ Islanders in a preliminary match of the CONCACAF Champions League. If TFC beats the Islanders over two legs they will advance tot he Group Stage of the league. This game is so important for Toronto that forward Dwayne De Rosario chose to skip the MLS All-Star game and play with his teammates instead. De Rosario is one of the few players that has any kind of previous experience in this tournament so his presence in the line up will be vital. Puerto Rico made it all the way to the semi-finals of last years tournament and is one of three teams representing the Caribbean Football Union. They play in the United Soccer Leagues’ First Division where they currently sit in third place.

On yeah, that MLS All-Star game I mentioned earlier its going tonight in Salt Lake City Utah. The best of the MLS will face off against Everton FC from the English Premier League. Even though De Rosario passed on the game, there still is some Canadian content. At 41 years young, Vancouver native, Pat Onstad of the Houston Dynamos is the oldest player in MLS and the goaltender was a coach’s selection for the team. Just don’t let his age fool you. He boasts the league’s lowest goals against average at a paltry 0.71 goals per game.

Who’s the hottest team in the American league right now? Most people would answer Boston, New York or perhaps Los Angeles and they would all be wrong. Try the Cleveland Indians. You heard it right…the Cleveland Indians. The Tribe has won 5 straight. Despite being trade deadline sellers they’re looking to end the second half of the season on a high note. Yesterday Cleveland traded first baseman Ryan Garko to the San Francisco Giants for a pitching prospects and there are rumours Cliff Lee, Victor Martinez and Grady Sizemore may be on the move as well. Talk about a gutting. Last night the Indians stole one from the hometown Angels when Martinez and Jhonny Peralta hit back-to-back jacks in the ninth inning leading to an 8-6 win. Tonight it’s game two of their series with the Halos, losers of their last two. David Huff (5-4) is on the mound for Cleveland. Jered Weaver (10-3) gets the ball for LA. Perhaps the Indians need to channel their inner Pedro Cerrano to keep the streak going.

Yin and Yang. For fighting in hockey and against. X-Box 360 or PlayStation 3. The light side of the force versus the dark side. There are so many examples of polar opposites in this world and in St Louis, Major League Baseball will display one if its own. Manny Ramirez and Albert Pujols. Ramirez the barely-caring, laid-back slugger who served a 50 game suspension for using performance enhancing drugs. Pujols, one of the most intense professionals, who wants the world to believe he’s the one who can put up ridiculous numbers without any synthetic help. Pujols has played more then double the number of games as Ramirez and even though Man-Ram has the edge in batting average the Cards first basemen has more then two times the number of home runs and RBIs. In fact Pujols is making a run at the triple crown leading in the league in long balls and runs batted in. At one point in each of their careers both men have been labelled the best in the game.

Each of their respective teams rely on their guy to lead their team to the promise land. The Cards are half a game behind the Cubs in the National League Central, while the Dodgers are running away with the West. Getting the ball tonight for the Cards will be the ace of their staff Chris Carpenter (8-3). The Dodgers counter with veteran Randy Wolf (5-4). In this three game series you can be sure Pujols will be productive and Manny will be Manny. So expect the supporting casts to decide who comes out on top
