college of sports media banner Lunch Time Radio & TSM Game of the Night

Here are the lineups for the shows at noon:

On Hockey Central At Noon:
12-1 Darren Millard Nick Kypreos
1225 brad park
1245 john ferguson jr

1-2 Darren Milllard Doug MacLean

125 Rick Nash

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

For the last couple of weeks the NL wild card has been considered a two horse race and the eventual winner would be either the Colorado Rockies or the San Francisco Giants. Well the Atlanta Braves and the Florida Marlins are now in the mix and have decided to crash the party. In fact the Braves, winners of their last three are now trailing the Rockies by three and a half games while the Marlins are tied with the Giants four games back. Three of the teams open up three game sets tonight, while the Giants hos the Chicago Cubs in game two of a four game set.

Colorado is in tough in their match up this evening as they welcome the St Louis Cardinal to the Mile High State. The Card have been the hottest team in the National League since the all star break and are one game away from punching their ticket to the postseason. Aaron Cook (10-9) gets the call for the Rox. St. Louis give the ball to the ace of their staff, Chris Carpenter (16-4).

Atlanta has the easiest match up. They are in Washington to play arguably the worst team in all of the baseball, the Nationals. The only danger in playing this type of an opponent is the potential of overlooking them and focusing on the their crucial series against Florida. Javier Vazquez (14-9) starts for the Braves. The Nationals counter with lefty John Lannan (9-12).

The Marlins welcome the disappointing New York Mets to Florida tonight. The Mets were supposed to be World Series contenders, but injuries to Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and David Wright put an early end to any play off aspirations. Ricky Nolasco (12-9) goes for Florida and Tim Redding (3-6) starts for the Mets.

Last night San Fran was one out away from the win, when disaster struck. Closer Brian Wilson gave up a two run bomb to Jeff Baker and the Cubs won 3-2. Ouch. Tonight the Giants send reigning CY Young winner Tim Lincecum (14-6) to the mound. The Cubbies counter with Carlos Zambrano (8-6).

The Lost Bob Mccown Years

While looking for video of Mccown vs. Maclean I stumbled upon these gems- in a word- PRICELESS:

and then this one:

Changes at the Fan

More hockey more detailed hoops from the fan 590. Hockey Central goes twice as long 12-2 and the gameplan goes 2-4.

Here is the offical word :

“TORONTO – THE FAN 590 is pleased to announce changes to its afternoon lineup. With the resounding success of Hockey Central from Noon until 1 p.m., the show has been expanded to two hours. Beginning Monday September 14th, Hockey Central will now air between Noon and 2 p.m., with both hours being simulcast on Rogers Sportsnet.
The first hour of Hockey Central features host Daren Millard along with co-host and former NHL player Nick Kypreos discussing all the latest news from the hockey world. The second hour sees former NHL General Manager Doug MacLean join Millard to provide his insight on all things hockey. Both teams will continue to provide FAN listeners with the most entertaining and informed hockey talk in the city.

The Game Plan with Jack Armstrong will follow from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Starting Monday, Raptors colour analyst Eric Smith will officially join Armstrong as the co-host of the popular program. With Armstrong’s trademark raspy voice and Smith’s opinionated take on all things sports, the Game Plan will continue to be a strong presence on THE FAN afternoon lineup.”

Wonder where that leaves Doug Fairway? The Deacon had been in the 1-2 slot.

Anyone think 2 hours of hockey is overkill? Anyone think a basketball shie mid day will do well in thus town?

Mccown is right

Few on the “media” side have been as critical of Jim Balsillie’s NHL bid than Doug MacLean. Prior to last nights episode the best edition of Prime Time Sports in a long time was the last time Mccown and MacLean went at it. I am on the road so I don’t have access to the files but I seem to recall money bags maclean really taking it to Jim Balsilie.

For Maclean to pull an about face is pretty surprising. He was singing the NHL song for a long time, likely becaue he knew that the only way to cease being an outsider was to kiss Bettman’s ass. Maclean is now in bed with the enemy! He had better hope this pans out becuase He now won’t get any endorsement from the league to any potential opening.

I will say this in MacLean’s defence. Mccown turtles, about 99.9 of the time when a guest comes on his show. He will bash a guy behind his back and then crawl into his shell when the guest joins the discussion.

This was great radio. Let’s hope Maclean is soon done from the fan.

Speaking of the Fan, sourced tell TSM that Nick Kypreos and at least one other on air talent at the Fan have take it on the chin with respect to their latest contracts. Apparently the purse strings are being watches very closely by Rogers big wigs.

Is Brian Burke Done Tinkering With the Maple Leafs?

tinker bell movie Is Brian Burke Done Tinkering With the Maple Leafs?

So the clock is about to strike midnight and Tomas Kaberle is about ripe to turn into a pumpkin as he remains a Maple Leaf. One has to wonder where did this come unglued. Without exception, almost every member of the media expected Kaberle to moved and for a fairly decent return. Instead, it looks like Burke was unable to get a deal done for the reasonably priced Bud. At one point we hear that Kaberle was going to Boston for Phil Kessel with picks going one way or the other. That deal fell apart. Burke is on the record as saying that players with NTC’s won’t be asked to waive them. Therefore it’s hard to see a situation where Kaberle gets deal after tomorrow.

Burke, in my opinion has a major problem. He can’t afford to let Kaberle walk at the end of next season. Yet with Burke being adamant about not forcing a player to waive their right to a deal, it appears that Burke may well be stuck with Kaberle after the fact. It says here that Burke, come next summer can’t let Kaberle go for nothing. The pundits also say that they can’t overpay for Kaberle. What’s a GM to do?????

So, if we assume that Kaberle is here for the rest of season, what else can Burke do is anything?? I mean what are his tradeable assts? Is there anyone that Burke would be willing to deal who has any value? I am pretty sure that the answer is nyet. Yes he can deal some Maple Leaf spare parts, but the question is what can he take back, or what will he be willing to take back.

It looks like what started out as a very busy summer is going to end with a whimper. Is that telling? maybe, maybe not. It appears to me though that once the window to trade Kaberle closes, Burke’s ability to make meaningful changes to the Leafs decreases diagrammatically. Has Buke done enough to get the team back into playoff contention? I am not sure. I happen to agree with Doug MacLean. As goes the goaltending, so too will the Leafs season go. Jim Ralph was on with Brady and Watters today and he said that we will know where the Leafs are going to stand 2 months into the season. I think that is right. Burke’s ability to make in-season changes is going to limited by the fact that he won’t have many desireable assets to deal this season. Come deadline day, Burke probably won’t have the horses to make more meaningful changes as many of us will want. Burke has made many changes, the results, I think will be impressive. The problem of the Leafs lack of depth, I think will be their biggest problem all season.

Did The Maple Leafs Improve? Zherdev Needed A Locksmith?

logoguy Did The Maple Leafs Improve? Zherdev Needed A Locksmith?

Doug MacLean was on the fan’s morning show this am with Don Landry and Gord Stellick. Richie Rich was asked his opinion on Burke’s offseason his response was quite interesting:

MacLean said that Ken Holland, the Detroit Red Wings GM always says that you don’t invest to much money in non point generating defencemen. Brian Burke has brought in multiple non-point generating defenceman. Michael Komisarek signed on for $4.5m/year for 4 years and he has never put up more than 20 points in the NHL. Don’t shoot the messenger, I am just telling you what you have missed on the radio this am. Francois Beauchemin is a little bit better, having put up over 30 points, however, according to MacLean, he did so with some pretty other defencemen named Progner and Niedermayer, Beachemin’s $3.8m /year for 3 years is hefty again for a non point producing defencemen according to MacLean. The same comment was made about Garnet Exelby.

Maclean said that the Leafs (maybe not the fans) are really going to miss Pavel Kubina in that he was a point producing defencman. He also questioned Kaberle’s ability to produce points as the only guy on the team. He said that yes they are tougher, but the pressure on the defence to generate offense (not necessarily in terms of actual points) is going to be great. His point was that guys like Nik Lidstrom, which admittedly are one in a million generate about “200 points a game”. No he doesn’t get that many points, but goals are scored as a direct result of his plays.

This weakness on the blueline, according to MacLean will make it way more difficult for the limited offensively gifted forwards that the Leafs have. They haven’t really added any guns up front who can be counted on to score.

MacLean suggested that the biggest question mark for the Leafs will be in net. Toskala, he said is a number one goalie. Question is, can he play like one. Secondly, until Gustavsson actually plays some games, no one knows how good he will be. As goes the Leafs goaltending, according to MacLean, so to will go the Maple Leafs.

The Leafs, MacLean said may be in the hunt for the playoffs but certainly aren’t a shoe-in to make it. They have to pass a lot of teams including teams like the Senators who didn’t make the playoffs last season. A tall order he suggested.

Of greater interest was MacLean’s take on Nikolai Zherdev. Zherdev, is the reason MacLean got fired. At least, according to MacLean. The contract situation and the fallout from it got him canned. MacLean said that he should have known that Zherdev was going to be a handful when he asked him at the draft after he picked him at 18 years of age what car Zherdev drove and the response was “a Mercedes”. It was interesting that when MacLean told that story, there was silence after the “punch line”. Nikolai Zherdev, according to MacLean is one of the most talented kids he has ever seen. He is also one of the biggest enigmas. MacLean said that he tried literally everything to motivate Zherdev and instill a work ethic in him. He even signed Sergei Federov whom MacLean considers the greatest Russian born NHLer of all time. MacLean took lots of lumps for signing Sergei, but thought if only he could get through to Zherdev… One day Federov came to MacLean and pretty much gave up. Federov said that he couldn’t talk to Zherdev anymore, that Zherdev simply didn’t want to listen. Then MacLean out a real gem. He said that when he went to Zherdev’s place after he was gone, the landord of Zherdev’s place said that he was called to change the locks on Zherdev’s apartment 6 times in the one season he played there! The guys asked MacLean if perhaps Zherdev was guilty of poor judgement, MacLean just laughed and said “ohhhh the book I could write!”

MacLean talked about how the role of the media has made a GM’s job so much more difficult. He said that he has had some time to reflect on his life after being out of the game for a bit. He said that the pressures of the job are one thing, but that the intense media scrutiny on everything really makes it more difficult then in the past.

It was a good interview with MacLean. The problem is, it was the exact same interview MacLean gave only hours earlier with Bob Mccown. As I have said about Bill Watters, you can’t over-expose these guys. No talent is good enough to be on multiple times, especially in the off-season. If you listened to MacLean the other night, there was no reason to listen again today. As I flipped back and forth this am, I heard the same jokes, the same stories and analogies that he used with Mccown. It’s not a knock on MacLean. It’s just over exposure.

In the same vein, have you noticed that Mccown seems to be spending more time with his guests on PTS? Over the last couple of days he has been taking longer, fuller segments with guests and even running later than usual breaks. While he may be driving his producers nuts in doing so, the results, in my opinion anyway are significant. He did it again tonight with Dan Shulman in talking about the Blue Jays. Mccown maybe the only radio host who spends considerable amounts of time on the Jays and seems to think they are going somewhere(and I don’t mean Portland) He made it clear again tonight that he strongly believes that the Blue Jays are not only going to spend the Rios and Rolen money just saved but get to a payroll between $100-120m.

I have to admit, I am not a soccer aficionado, but the Champion League banter tonight on 640 was good stuff too. If only I understand who the hell they were talking about.

Have a good night.

6:40 – KEN SINGLETON – YANKEES BROADCASTER

TSM TAKE:

Matt Sekeres was great last night looking forward to hearing him tonight. Griffin has been really pointed on the Jays, Rogers and JP, so he should be good to listen to. The Coyotes case comes to a head to a degree today, and Becker is good at predicting these types of things. NFL season is getting close (thank god) Banks talks the game as well as most other talking heads. MacLean has been quite of late, must have been off counting his money. Kane’s lawyer is on tonight (stay tuned for an interesting look at his brackground later tonight). Does any other CFLer get more air time than Obie?? Just how hard are the White Sox laughing at the Blue Jays? The Hawk will tell us. The Jays remain in New York, and Singleton will be good for some perspective on that.

6:10 – Dreger/Morrison
6:40 – Tim Thomas up for Vezina

TSM TAKE:

So after yesterdays dual between the 2 shows, we are due for a bit of a let down. Anselmi, wonder if he is on to talk about grass at BMO? Bert Sugar, I know I am in the minority but I have no interest in the fight game right now…but Tyson was funny as hell in The Hangover….Roy Mlakar is a good interview, interesting to hear what he has to say about leaving the Sens and Heatly. I loved when he used to go on with the Fabulous Sports Babe…Doug Maclean, I wonder what job he is going to promote himself for, actually, I am waiting for another blow up like we have about a month ago. Again, I am in the minority in not being a huge Iain Page fan. Purple is in for Brady, which is much like anyone subbing for Mccown, and no, I am not comparing the two! Andy Murray has been around the game forever, hope he is having fun in Vegas. Kurt Rambis is known for being one of the ugliest guys to ever play professional sports and with 9 days until the draft hopefully Dregerand Morrison have good scoops on what Brian Burke is up to besides torching Heatley!
