HNIC Should Be Embarrased!

There was a time and a place where hockey night in Canada was the undisputed heavyweight in hockey broadcasts, but after watching tonight Toronto Maple Leafs v Florida Panthers game, man have times changed ant not for the better!

Let’s start with the audio. If they didn’t show Bob Cole and Greg Millen (with the guy from Cheers named Paul on the computer)in the booth, I would have bet they were in someones basement doing the play by play via a string and tin can.

As much as I love Bob Cole he was brutal tonight. He totally butchered the English language all night. As for Millen, will someone tell him that the guy who played in net tonight for the leafs name is not Gooose tuvsson. Similarly, his analysis was brutal. His classification of the last goal as a big turnover by Tyler Bozak was just plain wrong. He also slammed Gunnerson (whom he calls Goonerson) for leaving the zone. The leafs were losing and time was running out, the ex goalie needs to stop defending the “union” as goalies do at times do make mistakes.

The hot stove used to be one of my favorite segmeta was weak at best. Besides a shot at Bruce Garrioch it was a total waste of time. The first part rehashing the Canucks vs Ron maclean wasn’t the least bit interesting. I miss John davidson on those segments and god please make mike milbury a Gm again soon, the leafs need him to be running a team.

Tonights game was hockey at it’s worst, and that had nothing to do with Maple Leafs losing. It was dull, boring and painful, as someone said on Twitter, a return to hockey in the mid 90’s it’s no wonder no one goes to games in the south!

Meanwhile, HNIC has a lot of work to do, tonights broadcast was as bad if not worse than the game itself.

Hockey South Florida Style

Greetings from sunny south Florida. Pardon the couple of days of silence, but I have to admit it’s nearly impossible to get much Toronto sports news or even hockey news in these parts.

Consider if you will that my hotel is comprised of at least 50% canadians, of which the majority are Torontonians (based on the number of toronto maple leaf hats and tshirts around the lobby and pool). Yet Im thinking that the vast majority are using this stay as a vacation from more than winter back home, seking shelter from our sports teams. While they are wearing the logo’s of our teams, no one is following what is going on the ice or the court. A tour through the lobby as an experiment asking those wearing Toronto garb if they knew how the leafs or raptors did over the last couple of days resulted in blank stares, one guy said please don’t remind me. I asked a few people if they heard any wjh scores and they said Gasp- no interest while I am here.

So I went to the concierge to see if he could get me Florida panthers tickets for this afternoons game, I was met with “who”

We watched the local news the last couple or days to get our fill of terrorism updates and not a menion of the panthers or team USA at the toruney. To be fair I haven’t picked up a local paper. The only sign that I have seen that the panhers actually exist is a billboard on I 95 near my hotel. We took our kids to sawgrass mall yesterday afternoon and despite the fact the arena is “around the corner” we saw no evidnce of a team. I went into 2-3 sports stores and found no panthter items for sale.

So but for Twitter (a daily glance) and a quick review of my rss reader I’ve reached the conclusion hockey is further down the list then when I lived here back in 1997 to 2000. The test will come today and tonght when they play. Unfortunately for the cats, so too do the heat and dolphins.

Ex Maple Leaf Of The Day Gets Gig

dominic moore Ex Maple Leaf Of The Day Gets Gig

Dominic Moore, who had to have had the worst summer of anyone I know, has apparently found a home. Brian McCabe and the Florida Panthers have signed Dom. Details of the deal haven’t even been rumored yet. Let’s see just how much Dom and his agent Larry Kelly blew it by not taking Burke’s last offer pre-deadline last year…. Good luck Dom- make sure Caber introduces you to the host at Joe’s Stone Crab, waiting in line there can be a bitch.

What A Difference A Year Makes In Maple Leafs Land

chickentimeflies What A Difference A Year Makes In Maple Leafs Land

So, time flies when you are having fun. Hard to believe it was a year ago that Bryan Mccabe was ummmm, taken from us in a deal for Mike Van Ryn. This was, in Blue Jays terms and with all due respect to Van Ryn, equivalent to letting Alex Rios go on waivers. Mccabe, once the sweetheart of the Maple Leafs and fans was let go for a guy with ummmm injury problems. Not quite getting nothing in return, but this was a cash dump of massive proportions and also giving a guy in desperate need of a new start tha chance to renew his career.

Mccabe: 2008-09 Florida Panthers NHL 69 15 24 39 41
Van Ryn: 2008-09 Toronto Maple Leafs NHL 27 3 8 11 14

Fletcher was never going to get value for Mccabe, everyone knew he wanted to deal Mccabe. So it may not be entirely relevant what he got back, Van Ryn got off to a pretty good start before getting hurt again. One has to wonder what he could do if he stays healthy. One has to wonder what he has to do to stay healthy. By the sounds of things, Brian Burke and Ron Wilson have challenged all the Maple Leaf players to report in the best shape of their lives or risk playing for the Marlies if at all. This is his last year on his deal so, it’s put up, stay healthy or shut up time.

I wonder if Burke where here at this time last year if he would have dealt Mccabe. Something tells me he would have tried to make Wilson work with him. However, I thought the same thing about Pogge and his new goalie coach. Mccabe represented the last of the Maple Leaf problem children as described by Cliff as guys who had to move on. Not bad number by Mccabe however certianly not a return to what he once did. Are the days of ex-maple leafs performing better than when they were here finally behind us???

It is a different time for sure. There is more hope this year than last. Last year we were waiting on Burke. This year we are waiting to see if it was worth the wait.

Florida Panthers Exec Hits on News Anchor

This is classic. The new Panthers owners must be proud…The guy was on tv when he started to hit on Ainsley Earhardt, the Fox News anchor who was interviewing Uri Man ice-president of real-estate development for the Panthers. Can’t wait to hear what Mike Toth has to say about this one!

Dog Days Of June For Brian Burke

imagesdog 20days 20of 20summer Dog Days Of June For Brian Burke

So Brian Burke goes postal on Brady and Watters and when you listen to the interview you are left with the impression that something had Burke riled up before he even picked up the phone to do the interview. So of course, inquiring minds want to know what got him so pissed off. Well, it says here that Burke is antsy. All around the league shit is happening and like in the Rod Stewart song, “there’s none for me”. Burke can see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, the start of his time to shine, but it is still 3 weeks away. Teams are making coaching changes, he isn’t about to do that. Teams are making GM moves, he isn’t going to do that. Teams are signing superstars to long term deals, he can’t do that. Burke’s hands are tied by mother time and there is nothing he can do about it. It’s frustrating to me as a fan, it’s got to be driving him nuts. I mean how many times can you call a fellow GM and say, you ready to deal yet?? It was one thing a month ago, now the clock has turned June and well, it’s still hurry up and wait time.

Add to that the fact that Joe Nieuwendyk is gone, he still hasn’t landed the Monster and Burke is going to be cranky. Anyone else notice the quote from him yesterday that he is certain Nonis will be gone next off season??? Interesting comment given the fact that Burke has already allegedly deny one team the right to speak to Nonis this off-season. NHL contracts end later this month so Burke will have to decide what he is doing with the likes of Jeff Jackson and the rest of his management team and scouts, so that should be interesting too. It says here that there will be changes in that department in addition to the countless roster changes Burke is going to make.

Is it me, or does Gary Bettman become less and less likable each time he either appears publicly or speaks publicly. I have made my position clear. Bettman is a bold faced liar. He looked the public in the face and said things that were totally false about the state of one of his teams. He may have had reasons for doing so, but a liar he is nevertheless. Therefore, each time I hear that voice, I turn the channel. I bought it once, I don’t buy it this time.

So, Bettman was on with Richie Rich MacLean and Jack Armstrong yesterday afternoon. He, once again got off easy. A caller today, I am told called MacLean and Armstrong and voiced his displeasure with their “weak” questioning of the commish especially on the whole honesty issue. So, the hosts apparently got very defensive and basically made the point that they weren’t going to bring someone on of Bettman’s stature and call him a liar. The caller, I am told, didn’t take that answer well and was persistent to the point where the call ended with the hosts saying, sarcastically that they would be sure to have the caller in studio the next time the commissioner is on the air. So, here is my take. Good radio hosts know how to do the dance. Don’t slam a person when he is off the air and kiss their ass when they are on it. You lose credibility when you do that. Mccown used to be famous for it. He would bash the hell out of someone off the air and then when they came on treat them like they were the best of friends. In this instance, MacLean should have given the Commissioner the opportunity to discuss why he lied to the public. I understand that you don’t invite someone into your home and call them names, but you have to have some integrity. I didn’t hear the call, it isn’t on the website. Whomever you are caller….good on you.

Speaking of callers, who was the dipstick who called Brady’s show and suggested that it was high time Burke got fired??????? When asked for a name to replace Burke, Einstein for Etobicoke said anyone from the Detroit organization! You wonder why some of these guys hate to take calls…

MacLean, by the way was LOVED when I lived in Miami back in the day. People were genuially upset when he left. Bill Torrey(I love how the papers still refer to him as the architect of the New York Islander Stanley Cup Teams- like he hasn’t done anything since!) was around in those days and certainly will be calling Doug for a chat about the vacant Florida job. I wonder if the powers that be at the Fan could be any happier at the prospect of Maclean going back to his role as GM?

Credit to Damien for not pulling down his blog post of yesterday morning suggesting that perhaps the Canadiens were going to go out of the box with a Russian head coach. It hit my RSS reader well after the Jacques Martin story broke.

Hope you all liked the TSM take feature we started today, look for more stuff like that in the future. Also, Dan’s basbeall chat was awesome- if you haven’t listened to it yet you should.

Bikini OTD Sports Radio Tonight- New Feature The TSM TAKE

Here’s your bikini of the day from bikinibeat.org:
whattowear Bikini OTD Sports Radio Tonight New Feature The TSM TAKE

On Fan 590 Tonight- thanks to Mike S.

- open phones with Bob McCown from 4:05 to 4:55

- business report at 4:55

- co-host at 5:05 is Stephen Brunt

- former CFL commissioner Tom Wright

- Tom Tebbutt of the Globe & Mail on the French Open

- Blue Jays radio analyst Alan Ashby on baseball

- Doug MacLean on hockey from 6:30 to 7:00

On 640 with Brady and Watters:

440 Jacques Martin, Montreal Canadiens Head Coach

5-6 Doug Gilmour, ex-Leaf in studio

610 Scott Morrison, Inside The NHL

640 Bill Torrey, former Islanders President/GM

THE TSM Take: McCown, Brunt and MacLean were very entertaining last time around, may be worthwhile to listen in. MacLean will likely be asked and spew forth his interest in the Panthers vacant GM job. Doug Gilmour is a Watters favorite so the love in will be large. Bill Torrey comes from the same old school as Wilbur too, expect a ton of old references, jokes and of course nicknames. Tom Wright wrote Jim Balsillie’s relocation application so that should be interesting.
