Line Up: Leafs v. Flyers

133789 feature Line Up: Leafs v. Flyers

The Leafs look to bounce back after a disastrous couple of games .  They’ll need a solid effort with significant improvement on the back-end – especially with the surging Flyers in town.

Line-up changes of note …. Rosehill is in for Stalberg and Toskala is back in replacing Gustavsson.

Projected Lines vs. Flyers

Damien Is So Right

the price is right bob barker Damien Is So Right

Further to my article of last night, others are also seeing the serious flaws in the pro game as exposed by the “kids” in the world junior championship:

“This, needless to say, is a problem the NHL runs into when its brand of sports entertainment s juxtaposed with the world juniors or, as will be the case next month, the Olympics. By comparison, the NHL looks mechanical, passion-less and full of phony theatrics.”

EXACTLY

Now granted there isn’t much more entertaining than a game 7 of the NHL playoffs, but the regular run of the mill NHL regular season game like we witnessed either of the last 2 nights when the Toronto Maple Leafs played is just plan old dull.

“Sad thing is, this is where so many of those fine youngsters who competed in that glorious gold medal game on Tuesday in Saskatoon are headed. Whether they want to or not, they’ll be playing in a league that in mid-season too often is part-hockey, part-Gong Show.”

Let’ hope that as the kids move up the ranks to the NHL, the game will improve with higher skill players and less Jamal Mayers types.

The only line-up change has Jeff Finger in for the inured Carl Gunnarson.

Can the boys make it three in a row?  A nice streak and getting to .500 before Christmas would be fantastic considering how the season started.

Mike Komisarek is back in the line-up…Hard-luck Finger finds his usual seat in the team box along side Exelby and Wallin.  Toskala is feeling better but needs more hard practices before Wilson will put him back in.

Can the Leafs top their 61 shot effort against the Islanders?  My guess is that their goal is to win on the scoreboard versus shot total.

While no official line-up was posted; we know that Christian Hanson is up and in the line-up for John Mitchell and Jamal Mayers will slide into the 4th line center slot leaving Wallin in the press box once again.  Joey Macdonald will back up Gustavsson with Toskala out for 2 games or so.

Tavares is coming to town!  Let’s see if the Leafs can do to him what they did to Ovechkin on Saturday night.

It looks like Finger’s lower body injury will keep him out of the line-up…Exelby is in.   Is the Wallin project over?  He’ll sit again…Mayers remains in the line up.  Vesa gets the start…some media have reported that the goal is for him to play 2/3 of the games from here on out.  Let’s see if he can earn / reach that goal.

Here’s hoping for a mini streak to begin.

Line Up: Leafs v. Senators

133789 feature Line Up: Leafs v. Senators

Looks like Wilson is going to go with his #2 who was the #1 goalie tonight.  Some had suggested that Wilson might want to play Toskala more on the road until he gets his confidence back…So perhaps that’s all this is.  Or he is simply playing the hotter goalie as Tosk did show signs of life last week.

The line-up looks the same as the one that was put on the ice on Saturday.  Primeau is still out and White will play despite missing practice due to a personal issue.

I hope we see some bang and crash versus the odd fight from the 4th line….Can’t figure out why that’s not the way they come out – We need an energy line early…not a fight line.

Is Brian Burke Going To Waive Jamal Mayers?

Andy Strickland has this on hanky’s site :

“Are the Toronto Maple Leafs planning on placing forward Jamal Mayers on waivers? There could be a few teams interested in placing a claim on a guy who could add a veteran presence as well as some toughness. ”

Given the source take it with a grain of salt. Andy isn’t batting much better tha. Vernon Wells when it comes to rumors of late.

In any event it raises two questions, first, at what point does Brian Burke have to abandon ship so to speak on this year and start trying to get a return on his invetmets? And second what does it say about a guy who’s role is to bring toughness and veteran leadership to a team badly in need of both when he is waived?

Stay at home Berger, our resident statistician(now we know what he does when he’s not watching hockey at home, studies math and the scrabble list of approved words) has taken to givin us ship of fools regular updates on just how much of a long shot the playoffs are to team maple leafs. Given stay at homes ominious outlook, one has to ask when will Burke have to start looking at next year and the draft in which he doesn’t have any early draft picks. I know, it’s November 6th. I know, most of the new guys aren’t tradeable. I am not suggesting the time is now, the question is, barring the 10 game winning streak, when? When does it make sense to bring kids up and send vets down if not out?

By the way, speaking of stay at home Berger, get ready for this when the Leafs do finally put together a nice string, he will then say, despite a streak of x number of games where the leafs earned y number of points, they hve failed to make up any ground in the race for the playoffs as the teams ahead of them played z number of three point games and remain so many points ahead……. Bank on it. You gotta believe he rubs his kids noses in every mistake they have ever made.

Back to mayers. He, at the time was the one deal that cliff Fletcher made that really made me mad. In retrospect it wasn’t the worst of cliff’s second era. However it hasn’t been a good deal at all. Recall Brian burke’s first move? Bringing in Brad May. A move to provide much of what Mayers was brought in for. Now, a team that is in need of leadership is going to throw a guy who is supposedly a leader over board? Strange indeed. As much as I am not thrilled with his play, I would have thought the intangibles make it worth it. If this I true, a big if, I guess they weren’t.

Bet on this, if he gets waived, lay a few bucks on the team that picks him up, they will likely win the Stanley Cup, he will play a key role down the stretch; always happens….

Line Up: Leafs v. Lightning

The headline for tonights game is….the debut of Phil Kessel as a Maple Leaf.  Let’s trust that the medical staff took a cautious approach and Phil is in no danger of re-injuring his wing.  I for one will not be looking for #81 to net a hatrick tonight….I’ll be looking to see some speed and perhaps him getting a few chances to wipe the rust off.

Other than moving Tlusty down to make room for Kessel – no other line up changes.  Finger, Mayers and Rosehill get their reserved seats in the press box.

It is expected that Wilson will put his new #1 goalie back in cage…Gustavsson will get the start.

I’ll be in section 320 enjoying the game.  In addition to seeing Kessel’s return, it will be fun to watch a couple of first rounders….Hedman and Stamkos.

Line Up: Leafs v. Ducks

133789 feature Line Up: Leafs v. Ducks

What can I say other than…Is tonight the night?  Will the boys win one for Burke in his old stomping ground?  The Ducks aren’t exactly taking the NHL by storm this season but every team is a tough opponent for the Blue & White these days.

The notable move tonight is the return of Jonas Gustavsson who will get the start.  He hasn’t seen a lot of NHL rubber yet this year – let’s hope he’s ready.  Also noteworthy is the reduction in muscle in the line-up as both Mayers and Rosehill sit.  Finger takes his -6 to the press box again as he seems to be in a platoon situation with Garnet Exelby.

Tonights expected line-up…
