The Leafs look to bounce back after a disastrous couple of games .  They’ll need a solid effort with significant improvement on the back-end – especially with the surging Flyers in town.

Line-up changes of note …. Rosehill is in for Stalberg and Toskala is back in replacing Gustavsson.

Projected Lines vs. Flyers

Forwards:
Kulemin Bozak Kessel
Ponikarovsky Stajan Hagman
Blake Mitchell Stempniak
Rosehill Mayers Orr

Defencemen:

Gunnarson Beauchemin

Jonas Gustavsson will get the back to back start as the Leafs try to avoid completely erasing the gains they made prior to last nights Sabres game.

The only line-up change has Jeff Finger in for the inured Carl Gunnarson.

Line Up: Leafs v. Sabres

133789 feature Line Up: Leafs v. Sabres

Can the boys make it three in a row?  A nice streak and getting to .500 before Christmas would be fantastic considering how the season started.

Mike Komisarek is back in the line-up…Hard-luck Finger finds his usual seat in the team box along side Exelby and Wallin.  Toskala is feeling better but needs more hard practices before Wilson will put him back in.

Line Up: Leafs v. Lightning

133789 feature Line Up: Leafs v. Lightning

Can the Leafs top their 61 shot effort against the Islanders?  My guess is that their goal is to win on the scoreboard versus shot total.

While no official line-up was posted; we know that Christian Hanson is up and in the line-up for John Mitchell and Jamal Mayers will slide into the 4th line center slot leaving Wallin in the press box once again.  Joey Macdonald will back up Gustavsson with Toskala out for 2 games or so.

Line Up: Leafs v. Islanders

133789 feature Line Up: Leafs v. Islanders

Tavares is coming to town!  Let’s see if the Leafs can do to him what they did to Ovechkin on Saturday night.

It looks like Finger’s lower body injury will keep him out of the line-up…Exelby is in.   Is the Wallin project over?  He’ll sit again…Mayers remains in the line up.  Vesa gets the start…some media have reported that the goal is for him to play 2/3 of the games from here on out.  Let’s see if he can earn / reach that goal.

Here’s hoping for a mini streak to begin.

Line Up: Leafs v. Senators

133789 feature Line Up: Leafs v. Senators

Looks like Wilson is going to go with his #2 who was the #1 goalie tonight.  Some had suggested that Wilson might want to play Toskala more on the road until he gets his confidence back…So perhaps that’s all this is.  Or he is simply playing the hotter goalie as Tosk did show signs of life last week.

The line-up looks the same as the one that was put on the ice on Saturday.  Primeau is still out and White will play despite missing practice due to a personal issue.

I hope we see some bang and crash versus the odd fight from the 4th line….Can’t figure out why that’s not the way they come out – We need an energy line early…not a fight line.

Line Up: Leafs v. Lightning

133789 feature Line Up: Leafs v. Lightning

The headline for tonights game is….the debut of Phil Kessel as a Maple Leaf.  Let’s trust that the medical staff took a cautious approach and Phil is in no danger of re-injuring his wing.  I for one will not be looking for #81 to net a hatrick tonight….I’ll be looking to see some speed and perhaps him getting a few chances to wipe the rust off.

Other than moving Tlusty down to make room for Kessel – no other line up changes.  Finger, Mayers and Rosehill get their reserved seats in the press box.

It is expected that Wilson will put his new #1 goalie back in cage…Gustavsson will get the start.

Blake Stajan Kessel
Ponikarovsky Grabovski Kulemin
Hagman Mitchell Stempniak
Primeau Wallin Orr

Defense
Kaberle Komisarek
Beauchemin White
Exelby Schenn

Goalie

Toskala

I’ll be in section 320 enjoying the game.  In addition to seeing Kessel’s return, it will be fun to watch a couple of first rounders….Hedman and Stamkos.

A Win Is A Win Is A Win For Maple Leafs

cubs win A Win Is A Win Is A Win For Maple Leafs

In the end of the season it won’t matter much, it will just be one of several. However all things considered it was a big win for the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. The fact that they had to win ugly is quite irrelevant. It’s not their fault that the Ducks spent the entire night in the penalty box.

The Leafs started off in similar fashion, trailing 1-0. The rest however was pretty much history. they tied it up and then were off to the races behind Niklas Hagman who scored a hat trick and Tomas Kaberle who followed with several assists.

The play of the night, at least according to Joe Bowen and the rest of the Leafstv crew was an early save by Jonas Gustavsson. It’s one the either McDonald or Toskala would have let in and instead of just being 1-0 it would have been 2-0. The difference a big save makes is all about confidence. All of the sudden the guys can relax a little bit play their game. It certainly appeared to give the Maple Leafs a boost as they went on to their first win.

Make no mistake about it though, absent the Ducks frequent visit to the sin bin this game was going to be a another one most of us would like to forget. It was ugly. A battle between two bad teams.

In the end it won’t matter, a win is a win is a win, especially when it is your first of the year after 8 tries.

NOTES:

I have to ask, is there anything more pathetic then the way Leafstv produces hockey telecasts? During the pre-game the audio dropped about a dozen times. There were several name screw ups by the guys talking and the overall production looked totally mickey mouse. Couple that with Mr. Rogers 10, the Ron WIlson run to the other coaches, Bob freaking Mcgill and all that was missing was Marco Moro! How does a team like the Maple Leafs get away with such a shitty product. This is, unlike the product on the ice is totally under their control. The features they show before during and after the game are like a funny SCTV skit, except they aren’t supposed to be funny. The commentary by Rogers 10 is soooooooooo pathetic. I mean the guy doesn’t add anything of substance to a telecast.

Lastly, I know that I am in the minority, but man does Joe Bowen have to use the Wholly Makanaw on EVERY big play???? It is so planned, so contrived, so unnecessary. You have his comments, then Millen talking about how great and important each goalie is and to be honest the games aren’t watchable from the pure tv side of things.

From my seat on the couch, I can tell you that Leafstv is about 15-20 levels below TSN, CBC and NBC/Versus. Hell Fox did a better job on games then these clowns.

One last comment, can we PLEASE lose that god awful Maple Leafs song they insist on playing. I have nothing but respect for the Glass Tiger guy who wrote the song. IT was fine the first 300 times they played it, but really enough!

Not sure what Joe Bowen is smoking but as the game just ended he said that Jonas Gustavsson won his first game and Brian Burke won his first game as President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs….hmmmmmmmmm NO!

In any event, they win and so in easy fashion in large part to the ducks being in the box all night….
