Colangelo Speaks Chris Bosh

sourgrapes Colangelo Speaks Chris Bosh

I’ll admit it, since little TSM’s been at sleepover camp for the first time, my appetite for all things sports seems to have waned. Having said that, with each day I get more comfortable with his sudden absence and am returning to my normal routine. In any event, while in the fog of just having left him at camp, Mccown talked to Bryan Colangelo, the Toronto Raptors President and General Manager. Although I knew about the interview, having posted it on a bikini of the day post, I didn’t listen in.

Thanks to Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun, who has a great review of the interview I now have.

I am not going to summarize the interview as Ryan has done that already. Here’s what I’ll say. First, it’s another example, in mind anyways of why Mccown is great at what he does. It’s just a damn good interview. He asks the questions that I as a fan want him to ask. He brings out the best in these types of guests.

As an aside, Mccown was a guest PA announcer at the Jays game the other night, on 80’s night- a tribute back to the day (in 79 I believe) when he actually did the job. I was at that game and immediately awoke from my slumber when Mccown was shown on the big screen and introduced as the guest PA announcer. Two observations: 1- He didn’t wear his sunglasses. 2. Although he did the job in which he was asked to do, it would have been nice/fun/entertaining if he wasn’t such a pro about it. He called every batter who came to the plate. But that was it. I, for one wanted a little bit of fun/entertaining. I digress.

From my perspective it was interesting to hear Colangelo’s opinion now, and I understand why he didn’t say any of this then, but it doesn’t sit well with me. Personally, I don’t think the negative pr, no matter how true it may be, is necessary. I mean, what benefit does it do?

“We tried in vain to put pieces around Chris. Different pieces, different styles. It didn’t work out.”

“No matter what type of player we brought in, it didn’t seem to have the right mix with him as that centrepiece.”

That, from Wolstat’s article, is apparent to even a basketball novice like me. One could argue that the comment can be interpreted many different ways. If you listen to the interview, it certainly sounds like Colangelo is doing more than just stating the obvious.

In any event, the Raptors will press on. I’m curious how Raptors fans feel about the interview. To me, I would rather all he said was, something along the lines of, he was great while he was here, we took our best shot at signing him, and he decided to leave.

Bryan Colangelo Admits That Chris Bosh Is Likely Gone

61gOKwKHrAL Bryan Colangelo Admits That Chris Bosh Is Likely Gone

Bryan Colangelo was on with Mccown and Shannon tonight and well sports fans, he has admitted what many have been saying for some time. It appears that the end of the Chris Bosh era is near. Colangelo didn’t say it was a done deal, but he certainly got pretty damn close.

I’ve transcribed the gist of the conversation for those who can’t listen in…

BC to Mccown- How does it feel to be the last guy standing???

Mccown asks about the rumors

Colangelo “just read hoopworld for the latest gossip”

Colangelo: Bosh is kind of waiting, he said on ESPN- he is going to wait for Lebron to make a decision- anyone who says they know is nonsense- i do feel like i have an insight because I’ve had an opportunity to speak to Chris and his agent- seems to be a little bit of a movement that they all end up in the same spot- I have to be vague- Chris is officially a free agent- he will be exploring his options- I think it is likely that he will leave, the question is will he put us in a position to make a sign and trade scenario so we can get something back

Mccown: Is there anything you can do to influence him

Colangelo: We have our own recruiting, we were going to do a public campaign like Miami did with Dwayne, when we started to turn south, we didn’t feel there was the right tenor in the market so we pulled back, we have our own plan to talk to him either about staying or sign and trade. There is a strategy to what goes on- these reports of set meetings are concerning, no meetings should be set, if any meetings have been set its either illegal or done by word of mouth

Mccown: Could you do something with Hedo, in short order that may influence Bosh’s decision?

Colangelo: Yes and no, turk is moveable, I reserve comment on whether or not I will move him, I am not calling it irreconcilable at some point can’t let too much talent go, I can’t have them both go with not much coming back or we would be really weak- have to deal withone thing at a time. At the draft we landed someone who addresses some needs with or without Bosh. He is good insurance if Bosh leaves. If Bosh leaves I need to see are we getting something back and how to move on that.

Mccown: Have you talked to Chris about how you build the team

Colangelo: I have talked to Chris about every significant transaction that has gone on since I have been here. I can’t say it has been on going lately as he has been persona non grata- he is doing things to keep his name alive, I am not sure his agent has heard from him a lot- there is some frustration from us and probably his agent too. We do communicate with him, we have communicated with him. It remains our intention and desire is to keep him, it just has become more and more clear that it isn’t likely to happen.

Mccown: If Bosh leaves without sign and trade has a deal been broken

No “deal” has been broken- we will see how this plays out- we could have moved him, but it was never the strategy to deal him so we don’t lose him. I still believe that we played the right strategy, instead of making the playoffs, the team tanked and we are in a different set of circumstances – what happens now is out of our control. I still think we have some leverage in the amount of money he would leave on the table. This is special circumstances, he loves this city. He is part of phenomenal situation where teams have enough cap room to sign maybe three stars this is the perfect storm for him to leave and we will have to evolve from it and maybe that evolution started with the draft the other night- not that we have already replaced Bosh.

Mccown: Any plus to not doing a sign and trade?

Colangelo: There are some teams where, you can imagine, and if you read between the lines, owners wouldn’t want to be the guy who traded what could arguably be the best guy in the league away. Here in Toronto we have different circumstances….. If at the very end you get non player assets- such as draft picks or trade exceptions then it is a good thing…..

So, there you have it sports fans. Done deal? Not exactly, but man the writing is certainly on the wall.

By the way, did anyone happen to catch these gems from Steve Simmons on twitter tonight:

“Don’t know what makes less sense: Firing Stellick and Landry or putting Farraway on in the mornings. What’s the goal – zero ratings?”

ouch!

then when asked if he would be interested in a show on the fan:

“Had 3 shows on The Fan. 1 with Mary Ormsby (she was great). 1 with Jim Tatti (he wasn’t). 1 by myself. No interest in doing it now”

ouch again….

More coming…

Less Of Bill Watters A Good Thing!

0 Less Of Bill Watters A Good Thing!

Interesting developments in the Toronto sports radio world indeed. Bruce Dowbiggin broke this evening that 640 Toronto has waived the white flag to the fan 590 for the lunch hour hockey show. Dowbggin got hold of an internal memo explaining the end of Leafs lunch as we know it :

““The Leafs Lunch brand is not going to die,” program director Gord Harris wrote in a staff memo obtained by Usual Suspects. “It will live on — in a modified form — beginning in September.”. The daily hockey program, with Bill Watters and Darren Dreger, has been cancelled by the Toronto Maple Leafs’ host broadcaster after making a concerted challenge to the Fan 590 in the noon-to-1 p.m. time slot. The station will instead go with a syndicated talk format with Charles Adler from noon to 4 p.m., followed by the Bill Watters Show from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The station will apparently direct its sports resources to the Watters show. “The Leafs Lunch brand is not going to die,” program director Gord Harris wrote in a staff memo obtained by Usual Suspects. “It will live on — in a modified form — beginning in September.”

There is no surprise to me that Leafs lunch has been shelved. No matter how good the folks at 640 think Bill Watters they hopefully are getting that he is human. Too much of anyone is overkill and Watters 3 times a day is too much. There isn’t enough to talk about for the amount he has been on. He’s good in small doses- namely hockey season 4-7. If something big happens they can always break in with him.

With respect to Dregger, personally I think this is a case of him being in a no win. The truth is he is great at what he does and hosting isn’t what we want him to be doing. But him on with Brady or another host and he is good, at times even great. He’s one of the best insiders around and I love hearing his take on big stories and his insight on rumours etc.

What’s interesting to me is the following comment in Dowbiggin’s column about Bill Houston:

“Hearts were all a-flutter in Toronto radio land earlier this week with the purported news that CBC TV host George Stroumboulopoulos was taking over the morning-drive gig at the Fan 590. Alas, the story was a blogger getting too far off the leash.

Wow- interesting choice of words to in the Globe and Mail about a former long serving writer of the paper.

I am still working on the other story as promised. I know some are waiting for it and I will have something shortly.

Mccown and Martinez, Wilner and Gaston

lg buck ap 01 Mccown and Martinez, Wilner and Gaston

Thanks to those of you who sent all these in.

The more I listen to Bob Mccown, the more I think he is a baseball fan first and foremost, or at the very least a Blue Jays fan. He talks about all the local teams, but when it comes to the Jays he certainly appears to be much more passionate or invested. His co-hosts all ride him on it, but Mccown, whether jokingly or otherwise likes to make bold, positive Blue Jays predictions. So when Buck Martinez came on, Mccown sounded more like the typical Blue Jays fan than radio host. He raised many of the some issues and concerns that I know may did simply by following the Jays game on twitter.

Mccown raised many of the concerns that so many of us have expressed about the Blue Jays, that is that we want the team did well, was playing great and that it was apparent that Kevin Gregg didn’t have his stuff and Cito should have yanked him. Buck Martinez, wouldn’t have any of it. Martinez defended the Blue Jays, saying he was sick of all the negativity surrounding the Blue Jays, that Gregg blew one game. Martinez went on that Gregg is Cito’s closer. Cito had no other options left and Gregg was his guy. Mccown, to his credit, was saying that those of us watching the game knew Gregg didn’t have his best stuff and should have been yanked. Martinez said that Cito has designated Gregg as his closer and Cito doesn’t manage just for 1 game. If Gregg is his closer then Cito has to ride him. Martinez said that if Gregg’s name were Henke no one would be saying anything. Stephen Brunt asked if Kevin Gregg were of the same pedigree as a Henke, Martinez said that Gregg is without question the best guy they have. Martinez said he is a good pitcher who didn’t pitch well on one night. Brunt tired to press Martinez on whether Gregg will be “automatic” at some point. Martinez said that we all know there is a huge difference between closing for a .500 team and closing for a 1st place team. Martinez defended the players and Cito Gaston, Stephen Brunt seemed to take over for Mccown who got quiet for the last part of the interview. Martinez get very defensive when the topic of the “mutiny” from last year came up- again saying that some people who are not here any longer were stirring things up.

Now some of you said this was similar to Mccown vs. Richie Rich Maclean and I am here to tell you it was nothing like it. Mccown appeared to be pretty pissed at Richie Rich. Mccown here got quiet, let Buck and Brunt go at it and then seemed very amicable and friendly with Martinez at the end.

The Mccown, Brunt and Martinez interview is here

Meanwhile, while this was going on, it sounds like Cito was having words with one Mike Wilner. Wilner addressed it in his post game blog:

“I mentioned at the beginning of tonight’s Miked Up LIVE! that I had had a lovely discussion with the manager before the game, and that it was probably the last time we’ll talk, and some of you wanted details. Here you go:

Before the game, I had a discussion with Cito Gaston about the things I pointed out in last night’s blog post – about how he’d painted himself into a corner by not holding Shawn Camp and Scott Downs back. In the pre-game media scrum, Cito mentioned that taking Gregg out for Rommie Lewis or David Purcey wasn’t an option, but that if he’d still had Downs or Camp or Frasor available, he would have made a move before the Rays had taken the lead. So I asked him why he had removed Camp after having him only throw six pitches, with the ninth hitter at the plate, two out and nobody on in the 8th. Cito’s answer was “Have you looked at the stats?”. I said no, but that I couldn’t have imagined that Brignac could have more than three at-bats against either Downs or Camp, so it wouldn’t matter. His answer, again, was “you should look at the stats.” So I did, and they showed that Brignac had never faced Camp, and that going into last night’s game, he had faced Downs once and struck out. Obviously, one at-bat means less than nothing. It’s the same as having had no history against him, like Camp had. Cito asked a few minutes later if I’d seen the stats, and I told him the numbers and he said “that’s right”. Still wanting a real answer, I said “but you trust Camp, right? You’ve used him against lefties.” At which point I was interrupted by the Jays’ communications staff, saying that a question had been asked and answered. I explained that I was just trying to point out that he could have had Downs for the 9th had he left Camp in, and then Cito told me to look at Downs’ stats against the Rays (I’m sure the Crawford slam only adds to that argument).”

It’s too bad none of this was caught on tape as it sounds like it would be must see tv. Cito, at least as Wilner tells it got pretty defensive with Wilner making some pretty stereotypical comments to the reporter:

“Cito went on to tell me that it’s a lot tougher in his seat and that he can’t just sit there and blurt out anything that comes into his head. That was enough of the discussion for me. I think he also suggested I should come down and try managing, and I’m regretting that I didn’t take him up on the offer. I’d say that I’ll say yes the next time he offers, but I doubt it will come up again.”

Ya, I suspect that Wilner is correct in saying this is probably the last time the two talk. I mean Wilner has a job to do and that is covering this team. Part of that is talking to the manager. Similarly, Cito has a job to do and part of that involves talking to those who cover the team. Now, Wilner doesn’t usually travel with the team, unless something has changed and that relieves the pressure 1/2 of the time, but still this one will be worth watching.

“It’s unfortunate that I can’t have a legitimate discussion about strategy with the manager without him feeling as though he’s being attacked (or at least reacting as though he’s being attacked – I don’t know what he was feeling), but such is life. I don’t need to be belittled by the skipper in front of the entire assemblage when I’m asking legitimate, rational questions about a situation that he brought up earlier in a conversation.”

Couple of points here. I wasn’t there, so I have no clue how any of Wilner’s peers viewed this. We have all been there though. We’ve all been the one at one time or another to get singled out and made an example of and we know how lousy it feels. I am not going to suggest that Wilner deserved it, because I wasn’t there to here it. However, I will say that given the tone he takes (sometimes understandably) with his callers after games (and I have said time and time again that this is the hardest job in sports media in this town) I can see how this happens. Wilner is condescending at the very least in his tone with fans. Did he talk to Cito this way this time? I have no clue. Does he talk in that same tone to the players/management as he does to fans? I have no clue, I’m never there. All I am saying is if he does, I could see how he ruffles some feathers. Does that mean Cito should be an a$$ back???No.

Changes at The Fan 590

Folks are telling me this am that changes are afoot at the Fan 590 and that they are coming sooner rather than later and they will be sweeping and not mild. While names haven’t been confirmed, I’m told that 1 new hire has already been made and apparently this new person isn’t new to the Toronto airwaves. I don’t know where the new person fits but I’m thinking it’s not the morning drive show.

I’m also hearing that a change is planned to Bob Mccown’s prime time sports which could leave him much less than thrilled. Could this be enough to make Mccown look elsewhere when his deal is up?????? Who do you think would replace him that isn’t currently in a drive home slot????

It looks like the new program director is ready to make his mark.

Interesting times indeed.

Is Bob Mccown Getting Greedy?

Word on the street is that Bob Mccown, who apparently likes to be bothered while at dinner at Strato Restauarant on avenue road Toronto, may be getting greedy when it comes to his fees for the Primetime coverage on Sportsnet.

We are told that Mccown may have asked for too much money and PTS may get yanked off Sportsnet

Mccown is right

Few on the “media” side have been as critical of Jim Balsillie’s NHL bid than Doug MacLean. Prior to last nights episode the best edition of Prime Time Sports in a long time was the last time Mccown and MacLean went at it. I am on the road so I don’t have access to the files but I seem to recall money bags maclean really taking it to Jim Balsilie.

For Maclean to pull an about face is pretty surprising. He was singing the NHL song for a long time, likely becaue he knew that the only way to cease being an outsider was to kiss Bettman’s ass. Maclean is now in bed with the enemy! He had better hope this pans out becuase He now won’t get any endorsement from the league to any potential opening.

I will say this in MacLean’s defence. Mccown turtles, about 99.9 of the time when a guest comes on his show. He will bash a guy behind his back and then crawl into his shell when the guest joins the discussion.

This was great radio. Let’s hope Maclean is soon done from the fan.

Speaking of the Fan, sourced tell TSM that Nick Kypreos and at least one other on air talent at the Fan have take it on the chin with respect to their latest contracts. Apparently the purse strings are being watches very closely by Rogers big wigs.

Is Matt Gilroy Going Elsewhere? Burke Entering the Cone Of Silence?

covers 0437 Is Matt Gilroy Going Elsewhere? Burke Entering the Cone Of Silence? />
Sounds like Matt Gilroy is going to sign elsewhere. Word I am hearing is that Burke wouldn’t give Gilroy a 1 way deal and that other teams, including the Canucks where willing to give him a one way deal. Not over yet, but the fat lady is warming up.

Similarly, sounds like Burke is in the lead for signing the Monster. Nothing is imminent, but I was told that things would really have to come off the rails for him not to sign in Toronto.

Darren Dreger is reporting on his blog that Burke has already called the GM’s of the Tampa Lightning and NY Islanders. Dreger suggests that Luke Schenn would almost certainly be a part of the ask from either team in exchange for either of the top two picks. Addition by subtraction???? Stay tuned.

If you want to hear some good old fashioned radio, tune into this as Brian Burke takes Richie Rich Maclean to town! MacLean questions Burke on how in god’s name he thinks he can get to either number one or two and Burke rakes him over the coals. Maclean can’t be as dumb as he comes across in the in the interview. He has been better then this and I can’t imagine he was too pleased with this performance. Burke, on the other hand was fantastic.

Listen to the Chat here

cone of silence2 Is Matt Gilroy Going Elsewhere? Burke Entering the Cone Of Silence?
Burke was then on with Brady and Watters:

Here is a rough, as in very rough review:

He is watching the Marlies playoff series
Pogge: hopes he is ready to go, that is his wish and desire, still think he has special attributes, hopes he gets it right
Talked to Garth Snow about trading for the number one pick. He feels that from now on the discussions will be on a closed door basis- trying to do deal quietly. Think she has a shot and will take it. He has no intention of encouraging JT not to go somewhere… JT is very different then Lindros. With Lindros, question was how soon he would be top player in the NHL- Lindros was a rare specimen in 30 -40 years. Not same expectations on JT. Will be very good player. As for why he thinks he can make a trade up, he feels that some good young players emerged this season, he has some depth, and picks. He is not so sure, with cap room and cash in hand , that there aren’t options that will make sense to either Tampa or the Islanders. Taking bad salaries from Tampa is a possibility. He won’t divulge who and when he talks to anyone about this. Burke wouldn’t have said what he did if he didn’t think it was realistic to get it done. Going public is necessary because of what he has done before.

Matt Gilroy: didn’t take to agent today. Nonis hadn’t either. Silence not a good sign. Offered 2 way deal, told other offers were 1 way deals.
Jonas Gustavsson, very good meeting. Agent is a good guy. Never met him before. Going to Switzerland on Sunday, will meet with him next week. He is NHL ready, not coming over to go to the minors. Could battle Vesa for the starting position and the backup role.
Would consider adding additional picks beyond the number 7 pick. When you go into draft, he is trying to move up, would move down too… the draft is a fluid situation, have to work the phones and stay on top of things.

So, there you have it. Amazing, by the way how much PTS misses Mccown when he is away. Kelley hosted today and man was it weak. Yesterday, i didn’t hear it but lots of you did and emailed me about cricket and auto racing being featured. Don’t think Mccown would stand for that…
