College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

Coming off a huge win in Montreal on Tuesday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs continue their road trip as their in Columbus tonight to take on the Blue Jackets. It will be the only meeting between the two teams this season. Last year this one-time-a-year affair was played in Toronto and Columbus earned a 4-3 shootout win. Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson will not be available for tonight’s tilt. He left Tuesday game with an accelerated heart beat. Joey MacDonald will get the call. MacDonald came in against the Habs in the second period and preserved the shut out. Matt Stajan had another strong game. He notched his eighth goal of the season. In the last ten games he’s scored five and added five assists. Phil Kessel continues to impress. Against the Canadiens he had a couple of helpers and has 13 points in the last 14 games. Columbus got off to a got start at home, but have struggled as of late. They only one once in their last seven. The answer to their recent woes lies between the pipes. Steve Mason has struggled this season and over his last eight games has only won twice. Rick Nash continues to lead the Blue Jackets offensively. He has 15 goals and 14 assists already this season.

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

For the last couple of weeks the NL wild card has been considered a two horse race and the eventual winner would be either the Colorado Rockies or the San Francisco Giants. Well the Atlanta Braves and the Florida Marlins are now in the mix and have decided to crash the party. In fact the Braves, winners of their last three are now trailing the Rockies by three and a half games while the Marlins are tied with the Giants four games back. Three of the teams open up three game sets tonight, while the Giants hos the Chicago Cubs in game two of a four game set.

Colorado is in tough in their match up this evening as they welcome the St Louis Cardinal to the Mile High State. The Card have been the hottest team in the National League since the all star break and are one game away from punching their ticket to the postseason. Aaron Cook (10-9) gets the call for the Rox. St. Louis give the ball to the ace of their staff, Chris Carpenter (16-4).

Atlanta has the easiest match up. They are in Washington to play arguably the worst team in all of the baseball, the Nationals. The only danger in playing this type of an opponent is the potential of overlooking them and focusing on the their crucial series against Florida. Javier Vazquez (14-9) starts for the Braves. The Nationals counter with lefty John Lannan (9-12).

The Marlins welcome the disappointing New York Mets to Florida tonight. The Mets were supposed to be World Series contenders, but injuries to Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and David Wright put an early end to any play off aspirations. Ricky Nolasco (12-9) goes for Florida and Tim Redding (3-6) starts for the Mets.

Last night San Fran was one out away from the win, when disaster struck. Closer Brian Wilson gave up a two run bomb to Jeff Baker and the Cubs won 3-2. Ouch. Tonight the Giants send reigning CY Young winner Tim Lincecum (14-6) to the mound. The Cubbies counter with Carlos Zambrano (8-6).

Are The Maple Leafs Any Better This Week?

curb y0ur enthusi@sm Are The Maple Leafs Any Better This Week?

What a difference a week makes, or does it? Last Saturday night, Leaf Nation was comforted by the fact that free agency had yet to start, therefore Brian Burke’s inactivity at the draft wasn’t such a big deal. Just wait till Wednesday. Well, while Burke made a few tweaks on Wednesday, he has been prrrrreeeeeeetttttttty quiet (insert Larry David voice here) since. Once again, I don’t think the moves he has made are insignificant, rather I think that the hype which he caused created unrealistic expectations. So in reading some message boards, and listening to radio shows I can fully understand the frustration that folks are feeling. I truly get the sense that folks expected Burke to sprinkle magic dust and many of the franchises woes would have been cured. That doesn’t appear to have happened.

I loved Berger’s blog tonight. This whole, we are sunk notion because Rick Nash didn’t wait for his UFA year to sign here. I love how Howie points blame at the fans of the team (which he is numero UNO) for being loyal (to a fault), even to the point where we are to blame for the teams demise. What I love the most is that Howie spews on about the right way to build a team is throgh the draft. Well, history shows that if you are going to build from the draft you have to bottom out to get that franchise player. I have no problem with that notion. Tank Nation here we go. What I do have a problem with his Howie’s mid season shitting on the whole idea of Tank Nation. So I get this straight, we aren’t supposed to hope the Leafs go after the best available free agents because that isn’t the way to build. Got it. But we arent’ supposed to hope they totally bottom out either because what the hell are fans doing rooting against their team? You can’t have it both ways. What is left is simply rooting for the team, which of course we get shit on for in general terms.

If the season started tomorrow, I don’t know how many more games the Leafs would win. The team is tougher, but are they better? the one place they needed a clear ugrade is in net. So far we have rehabbing Toskala and tendered Pogge. Feel better yet? Love or hate Kubina, he ate a ton of minutes and could play the pp. Have the folks brought in captured the void? Time wll tell. It’s still early, so I think we need to wait a bit before we panic.

You have to think that any progress Burke was makinh anywhere has come to a complete halt while the les affairs Blackhawk gets decided. The folks I talked to said the issue is black and white. Those who are supposed to get the offers via fan or courier as dictated in the CBA DIDN’t. The penalty is supposed to be clear cut. The NHL is in a bad spot as the Blackhawks don’t have the cap space required to pay all the guys the going rate. I totally beleive that all GM’s who are shopping have hit the pause button to see where this goes. IF any of these guys become UFA’s there are some serious catched there that will cause created cap planning.

So, one week later we aren’t really that much farther ahead are we? Pressure is on Burke. This is clearly his team and there’s much work to do.

Great Read On Burke & Maple Leafs

patience1 Great Read On Burke & Maple Leafs

I switched back and forth quite a bit tonight on the drive home. Watters, Brady and Dreger was good. I have to say though, that Jeff Blair is growing on me as a co-host for Mccown. It is no surprise then that his article tonight on the Leafs, is your homework. We live in a hockey crazy market where the hiring of a new stickboy is big news. Some times we need to take a deep breath and relax, gain some perspective. Blair’s article tonight does that. I was talking to LT earlier when word started to circulate that Rick Nash may re-up with the Blue Jackets before becoming an UFA. There was panic in our brains as we started to try to figure out what the hell Burke would do if that were to happen. No Sedins, no Nash…P A N I C Truth is, we all now this is going to take time. Burke has just started, so let’s all breathe.

“Brian Burke owes Mike Gillis a debt of gratitude. In re-signing Henrik and Daniel Sedin, the Vancouver Canucks’ general manager might have saved Burke from undoing much of the good he did in a half-year as GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs.”

I think the take away is that Burke has a plan and the Sedins would have been a quick fix. I hate to say it, but the renovation not rebuild that Bill Watters refers to all the time.

“But the twins are also a dynamic that makes Wilson’s job a little more difficult at a time when the Maple Leafs need to be as light as possible on their organizational feet.
The Sedins are not a bad gambit for a team on the cusp of a Stanley Cup, but a club like the Maple Leafs, which is gosh-how-many years away from realistically contending, would be better advised not to get locked into too many complicated situations.”

I know the argument, you add the Sedins and you should be closer to contending. Problem is the spare parts aren’t there just yet. Not by a long stretch.

“So don’t beat up Burke over “losing out” on the Sedins. Day 1 of free agency went pretty well. Colton Orr is a booty call for a guy like Burke. Mike Komisarek and Garnet Exelby mesh moxie with the physical aspects of their games and most importantly ensure that when Tomas Kaberle is moved, those minutes will be divvied up among defencemen with an NHL pedigree. Minutes are hockey’s version of innings pitched.”

I think that’s right. Players are assets, Move them around to maximize value and return. That isn’t always easy to do. The other key that Blair doesn’t mention is giving kids the minutes they need to become seasoned. Schenn played a lot last year because he was able to do so in an environment where he could afford to learn, to make mistakes. I say it all the time, you can’t suck and blow. It’s hard to grow kids when you are expected to win every night.

“Komisarek will be useful to the Maple Leafs while they’re rebuilding and when (if) they are contending. He is precisely the kind of player who stays healthy and has a skill set that will ensure he does not become surplus to requirements for this management team. And his contract is hardly onerous, especially if the salary cap stays north of $50-million (all currency U.S.) in 2010-11 as some now expect instead of falling as low as $46-million to $48-million.”

I think that is yet be seen, but no this isn’t a head scratcher as other deals have been.

“You can debate all you want about whether Burke over-reached going into the draft when he said he wanted to get John Tavares. I thought it was good, clean fun, a no-autopsy, no-foul thing. It was apparent from Burke’s face during the draft that Brayden Schenn was the player he wanted, and my sense is that for all the nudge-nudge, wink-wink with the Sedins and that flight to Stockholm, Burke’s target all along during the free-agent season has been goaltender Jonas Gustavsson.”

We won’t know the answer to that until at least Burke is gone. I am having a hard time thinking he jumped on a plane over to see the Sedins only to then learn they weren’t available. We have been sold that he tight with these guys, there agent had to have known he was getting on a plane if the intent was to sell them on the leafs. Gustavvson signs here, it was a trip well worth it. If not, the prices of beers at the ACC will go up a quarter to pay for it. Scuttlebutt is that if he wanted Brayden Schenn he could have had him for Kaberle.. Hard to believe if he is peddling Kaberle now that he didn’t get Schenn.

“That’s how Burke ought to be judged this summer: depth on defence and in goal, something that gives his team a chance to steal a few games while it gets a better read on the likes of Tyler Bozak and Christian Hanson. Don’t pay attention to what Burke says. Pay attention to what he does.”

Bingo, perspective. Enough said.
