What’s great way to draw attention to a major sporting event? The Roger’s Cup has decided to channel some energy from an old Nike ad featuring Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi (check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KniY8jx-LI8&feature=related, for a hint).  They’re flying in two of the top women’s tennis players in the world by helicopter and playing an abbreviated match smack dap in the middle of the city’s busiest intersection at Yonge and Dundas. To top it off they’re doing it in the middle of the day – high noon.

Today marks the official opening of the Rogers Cup at the Rexall Centre located on the grounds of York University. This year’s tournament has attracted the top women tennis players in the world including all the top ten women in the world. The qualifiers are out of the way and things will be underway at 11 am today. Canadian Heidi El Tabakh qualified for tournament play, making her the second Canuck to do so since the turn of the century. El Tabakh plays today against Australia’s Samantha Stosur. Another homegrown talent, Stephanie Dubois, battles Italian Roberta Vinci.

The match of the day is the last one of the day, featuring former number one Maria Sharapova taking on 10th seed and fellow Russian Nadia Petrova. Sharapova saw limited action last season, dealing with lingering shoulder injuries. This season she’s healthy and looking to add more hardware to her already full trophy case which includes US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon wins. Over her career Sharapova has dominated Petrova. She has a 7-1 record against Petrova including two wins this year.

Today marks the first round of the last major of the year in the PGA and more importantly the last chance Tiger Woods has this season to inch closer to Jack Nicklaus record 18 majors. The PGA Championship kicks off today at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chikasa Minnesota and it’s being billed as the longest course in major championship history stretching 7674 yards. It’s also the first track to have three par fives measuring more then six hundred yards. It seems like nowadays every tournament, especially majors, is all about Tiger and rightfully so. Since missing the cut in a major for only the second time in his career at the British Open Eldrick has been on fire. He started off by winning the Buick Open and followed that up with a seventh win at WGC-Firestone. Over his last eight rounds on Tour, Woods is an astonishing 32 under par. You have to believe the man is due.

Obviously there are other golfers playing in the tournament who have a shot at winning this major as well. A long course like Hazeltine plays right into the strengths of Phil Mickelson. Lefty has been at the top of the tour when it comes to driving average and his touch around the greens may be enough to win his fourth major. With a strong showing at last weeks tournament Padraig Harrington may be peeking at the right time. He did win this major last season. You also cannot forget about Stewart Cink. Since winning the claret jug Cink has been playing with a lot more confidence. Or the trend of first year winners can continue at this season’s majors: Angel Cabrera (first green jacket) won at Augusta, Lucas Glover claimed the US Open and Cink of course outlasted Tom Watson at Turnberry. Remember this is also a tournament that Rich Beem won back in 2002 for his one and only PGA tournament win.

The two teams that have done the most at the trade deadline play the first of three starting tonight in the City By the Bay. The reigning World Series Champions, the Philadelphia Phillies, pulled off a huge trade acquiring last seasons AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for four top prospects. There were several rumours surrounding the Phillies and the Toronto Blue Jays, but its seems the asking price for Jay ace Roy Halladay was too steep for Philadelphia.

Their opponents this evening, San Francisco Giants, have little to no chance of catching the NL West division leading Dodgers, so making changes to keep on top of the wild card race will be their only way of getting into post season play. Like the Phillies, the Giants pilfered a bottom-dwelling Indians team, swapping a left-handed pitcher for first baseman Ryan Garko. Keeping up with the trend of preying on crap teams, the Giants also picked up second baseman Freddy Sanchez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a right-handed pitcher The Giants sure seem to have a steady flow of young pitching and are willing to improve their team by trading them. (Maybe you should take note J.P. Ricciardi).

Rodrigo Lopez (3-0) gets the start in tonight’s match up for Philadelphia. San Francisco turns to Jonathan ‘No-hitter’ Sanchez (3-9). Garko is already in San Frans line up, while Sanchez will be out for a couple days with an inflammation in his left knee. Lee on the other hand may gets his first start in a Philly uniform in game three of this series. His opponent, last seasons NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum

Who’s the hottest team in the American league right now? Most people would answer Boston, New York or perhaps Los Angeles and they would all be wrong. Try the Cleveland Indians. You heard it right…the Cleveland Indians. The Tribe has won 5 straight. Despite being trade deadline sellers they’re looking to end the second half of the season on a high note. Yesterday Cleveland traded first baseman Ryan Garko to the San Francisco Giants for a pitching prospects and there are rumours Cliff Lee, Victor Martinez and Grady Sizemore may be on the move as well. Talk about a gutting. Last night the Indians stole one from the hometown Angels when Martinez and Jhonny Peralta hit back-to-back jacks in the ninth inning leading to an 8-6 win. Tonight it’s game two of their series with the Halos, losers of their last two. David Huff (5-4) is on the mound for Cleveland. Jered Weaver (10-3) gets the ball for LA. Perhaps the Indians need to channel their inner Pedro Cerrano to keep the streak going.

In baseball there is no bigger news then the return of Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles line up tonight as the Dodgers are in San Diego to face the Padres. During Manny’s 50 game suspension the Dodgers maintained their lead over the National League West, leading all rivals including the Padres by at least seven and a half games. Hiroki Kuroda (2-4) takes the mound for LA, while Chad Gaudin (4-6) toes the rubber for SD.

In the American League, the Toronto Blue Jays make their first trip to new Yankee Stadium as they tangle with their division rivals in some afternoon action. It will be the second time the Jays face former teammate AJ Burnett (6-4). Brian ‘classic 80’s porno ’stache’ Tallet (5-5) gets the call for TO. Jays hope to make up some ground as they trail the second place Yankees by four games in the AL East.

At Wimbledon it’s the men’s turn to battle in the semi-finals. The weight of a country is on the shoulders of Andy Murray. He hopes to become the first Brit to win it all at Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. Murray needs to get through Andy Roddick to get the chance. Roger Federer and Tommy Haas serve and volley in the another semi-final.

The Toronto Blue Jays welcome the Tampa Bay Rays for their first visit to the Rogers Centre tonight. Amazing news for the Jays, as Roy Halladay (10-1) will make his first start since straining his groin. A win tonight and Doc will be the first 11 game winner in the majors. Tampa has been hot as of late. They’ve won five straight and are third in the American League East one game ahead of Toronto.

A couple intriguing games oversees at Wimbledon. On centre court it will be a French Open rematch as Roger Federer battles Robin Soderling. On the women’s side number three-seeded Venus Williams faces former number one Ana Ivanovic.

Even though we are months away from the opening camp and even further from the start of the regular season, all eyes will be on Montreal this evening to see who goes where in the NHL Entry Draft. Will John Tavares, Victor Hedman or Matt Duchene be the number one pick? What will the Canadian teams do? A big trades may still the show. Rumours are a plenty about possible moves involving Dany Heatly, Vincent Lecavalier, Jay Bouwmeester and Chris Pronger. The draft is arguably the biggest day for most NHL teams in realizing Stanley Cup dreams-just ask this years champs the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It’s pretty rare for a game involving the Washington Nationals to be considered the game of the day, but today is an exception. John Smoltz makes his Boston Red Sox debut in the last game of their three game set. Smoltz is the only pitcher in major league history to win over 200 games and have over 150 saves. Smoltz knows the Nationals well. Last season, while pitching with the Braves Smoltz struck out Washington’s Felipe Lopez to become the 16th member of the 3000 strikeout club. Flame thrower Jordan Zimmerman (2-3) gets the call for the Nats.

Game two of a three game set between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cincinnati Reds goes tonight at the Rogers Centre. Scott Richmond (5-4) get the start for the Jays. Richmond’s set a career high in his last start, strucking out 11 Phillies en route to a 7-1 Toronto win. Bronson Arroyo (8-5) gets the call for the Reds. Toronto’s Scott Rolen has thrived in the four spot. He’s eighth in the league with .332 batting average. Richview Collegiate alum Joey Votto leads the Reds. Votto returned to the line-up last night and looks to keep leading his crew. He’s batting .354 with eight homers and 33 RBIS.

Whether you like golf or not, you do not want to miss the opening round of the US Open at Bethpage Black. Tiger Woods looks to repeat as champion, but this time with the use of both of his legs. Phil Mickelson would love to win for his wife. Mike Weir won the Masters in similiar type conditions, but Augusta is no Bethpage Black. This course is extremely long and it looks like it’ll be wet, setting up for a difficult time for anyone looking to win the silver trophy.
