Toronto Sports Media Pressbox

 Toronto Sports Media Pressbox

Hey folks, happy to announce coming to this site, the TSM Pressbox. When I started this site it was, in large part due to frustration over the sports media coverage in this town. That and my dog got tired of hearing me yell at the TV night in and night out. So in addition to my blood pressure coming down, I have been very fortunate with a couple of unforeseen benefits as well. First, and most important is the interaction I have had with those of you kind enough to check in from time to time. Secondly, many members of the Toronto sports media world have reached out to me offering support, guidance and assistance. Not all comments have been happy ones, yet to a T everyone has treated me with respect and as a result I have been able to make some pretty good friendships.

So, starting this week I am happy to start bringing to you, The Pressbox. I’ll be sitting down and talking about the issues du jour in the world of Toronto Sports Media. The first show gets taped tomorrow, and here’s hoping it’s a good one.

Stay tuned…..

Toronto Sports Radio Ratings- January

jcon564l Toronto Sports Radio Ratings January

Greetings from Switzerland. It’s funny how when the Raptors are winning, the Leafs providing hope that their just isn’t ton to talk about in terms of sports media in Toronto. Everyone is saying the same thing on the Argos/CFL, the Blue Jays aren’t a story yet, despite raising the cheap ticket prices… It’s so true how negativity sells. Oh well, let the good times roll.

I haven’t seen this anywhere yet, so if it has appeared I apologize. Here are the ratings for January for sports radio in Toronto.

The first category is for men aged 25-54 in general:

Fan 590 – 4.9
Talk 640 – 4.7

As a comparison:

news talk 1010 – 3.9

As a standalone number/category that’s pretty impressive. I assume that the fan would look at this as the target demographic and to only be ahead by .2 is quite alarming. Consider that the Leafs weren’t much to speak of and 640 only does a few hours of sports per day. Comparatively, one could say that the rest of their programing (non-sports) is popular with guys in this bracket.

Morning show, again men aged 25-54:

640 – 6.8
590 – 6.1

For comparisson:

1010 – 4.3

Is anyone surprised by these numbers? The Fan morning show is a dog. Something has to give, Landry and Stellick are beyond stale. It’s sad that we in Toronto don’t have a quality sports drive to work radio show.

The lunch time shows, at least hour 1 noon-1pm again only for men 25-54:

The Fan’s Hockeycentral – 4.4

vs:

640’s Leafs Lunch 2.9

Ouch! I don’t want to keep repeating myself BUT:

Dreger is a great insider. Dreger isn’t a good host. The sooner 640 realizes that too much Watters isn’t a good thing the sooner the numbers will increase. Rotate REAL radio hosts through the lunch hour, talk to the hockey world at large and leave Watters to the Watters show (during hockey season only please). They have enough “insiders” to leave Wilbur to his errands with Cheech and the fellas at lunch time.

Kudos to the fan for winning this battle HANDILY.

By the way, when 640 goes back to non sports, and hour number 2 of hockeycentral kicks in the number grows to 5.3!

It shows you there is a huge appetite for hockey info in the city. It’s all in how you fill the time.

If you look at the pre-drive slots, where the Fan is alone in the sports world with hockey central and the Gameplan, the Fan holds it’s own in comparison to other stations in the same demographic. This isn’t the greatest time slot and it’s a tribute to the guys at the fan for keeping fresh, local content on all day long. I will be curious to see if this number grows should the Raptors continue to play well.

Here are the results from 1-4pm, again men aged 25-54

640 4.6
590 4.5

for comparison:

CFRB 1.9

Ok- the big boys. McCown vs. Watters:

First the same demographic, men aged 25-54

590 8.7
640 4.1

The Bobcat delivers. It’s really that simple. My comments on Wilbur are above, and they hold true. I have to assume that the lack of anything interesting to say about the Leafs in January couldn’t have helped Watters either but, the numbers speak for themselves.

Where it kind of gets interesting, and this is a trend is with the younger guys (18-34). In my opinion this is the Brady factor. The numbers in the same time slot but for the younger guys are:

590 4.7
640 4.4

Now, 640 isn’t winning the race, but it’s a hell of a lot closer then with the older demographic. This is the Brady factor because younger people will relate to his tone, sense of humour etc. as opposed to the show that McCown does. I also wonder if McCown not taking calls cuts into this demographic for McCown.

So, there you have it.

More later.

Toronto Star Reporter Incredibly Insensitive

insensitive1 Toronto Star Reporter Incredibly Insensitive

Generally speaking, I am a Kevin McGran fan. I think he does a good job and is up there among his peers. Last night he crossed the line.

“Brendan Burke – the gay son of Toronto Maple Leafs…..”

That’s how McGran’s story on the sudden death of Brendan Burke, the son of Maple Leaf President & GM Brian Burke began. That my friends, while totally accurate, is incredible insensitive and totally inappropriate, in my mind anyway. The story has since been changed.

“Brendan Burke – the youngest son of Leaf general manager Brian Burke – has been killed in a car accident in Indiana.”

Clearly, a better way to introduce the incredibly sad story. In fact, the 2nd story doesn’t mention the sexual orientation of the late Brendan Burke until the 7th paragraph, which is about where it should be in the relevance of the story.

Sources are telling Toronto Sports Media this morning that members of the Leafs organization, both players and management got wind of the headline last night and are incensed at the insensitivity. Earlier in the evening, the Toronto Star ran a headline that was equally in poor taste, something to the effect of Devils late goals kills Maple Leafs. This ran AFTER the tragic story of Brendan Burke broke.

The tragic and incredibly sad death of the son of the General Manager of the Maple Leafs is the story. In fact it’s really the only story here. I am not so naive to think that the other part of the story shouldn’t be mentioned. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, not much has ever been written about Burke’s kids specifically until that time. Burke, was only looking to leave Anaheim to be closer to “his kids”. The press, much to their credit left his private life private. It wasn’t until Brendan came forward that we knew anything about him. So, I get why it’s in the story. It is relevant. To lead with it though???????? In my mind is incredibly insensitive at best.

Do The Toronto Raptors Get A Bad Rap?

bad%20rap%20logo Do The Toronto Raptors Get A Bad Rap?

It started as an innocent call to the Fan 590. A guy called in complaining about the coverage the Toronto Raptors get on the Fan590. The caller alleged that everything the Toronto Maple Leafs do is over-hyped and nothing the Toronto Raptors do is every hyped. His point was that the Leafs play of late has the media in a buzz, while no one talks about the Raptors except in a negative tone.

Taking the call was Eric Smith and Jack Armstrong. Part of Smith’s response was that, on a no name basis, there are those in the Toronto Sports Media who aren’t as big of fans of the Toronto teams as others.

Smith, in case you don’t know, is an active participant on Twitter (you can follow him at @eric_smith). So I, being the curious type, sent him a tweet asking him to, on a no name basis to expand upon his comment. Now, I have said this before but the one area, in my opinion anyway where Twitter is really useful is making guys like Eric Smith, (you can add in many sports media personalities here, especially on the local beat) accessible to us fans. Now I guess, prior to Twitter, I could have emailed Smith if I had his email address and maybe he would get it, and maybe he would have read it. Personal experience has shown that as long as you aren’t a total dink and are the least bit insightful most of the sports personalities in this town will indeed respond to you. In this case, what ensued was pretty cool, all things considering. Smith explained that in his opinion there are members of the local media (not on the Raptors beat) who don’t want other sports (hockey being the exception) like basketball and baseball to succeed here. He and I then went back and forth several times to the point where he invited his Raptors broadcast partner Paul Jones (@paul_jones) to the conversation.

The three of us discussed the issues for several tweets and the take away I got was that there is a genuine belief by those in the media, that other non-Raptors media types don’t respect basketball or the Raptors the same way that they do the Maple Leafs and hockey. Jones said that things are better today as opposed to the past, but still one gets the sense there is some bad blood in the media towards the dinos and those who cover them.

It got me to thinking, and who am I to suggest that these guys are wrong, they are living it, they know who their breathern are and who may have the hate out for what they do better than I. Are those in the media really anti-bball/Raptor or is there more at play? Are the Raptors getting a bad rap from the local media?

So here is what I think, and I am curious to know if I am on or off base.

The Raptors have been around since 1995. They have made the playoffs 5 times over those 15 years. They have advanced past the first round one time.

I would like to think that winning solves all problems. Not to point any fingers, but had this team been more successful then I think more people would be interested in covering them. This has been a team that has been all about the promise. There has been lots of hype, lots of enthusiasm but unfortunately for various reasons little in terms of wins.

Now, the Raptors do have an awesome fan base. The games are well attended and the Raptors blogs are some of the best around. There may not be as many Raptors fans as Maple Leaf fans, but man are the rabid. We have to remember that Jones and Smith were talking media not fans.

The second thing I have said many times about the MSM in this town is that they don’t talk basketball or Raptors because they don’t know it. How hard is it for us canucks to rip on Toskala for letting in a soft goal? Unless your real fan of the game it’s hard to make legitimate comments on what is or isn’t going on. Many who cover sports in this town don’t have that background. For them to start talking x’s and o’s in basketball when they don’t know what they are talking about would be, in a word bad.

Personally, what I think has happened is pretty interesting. When Colangelo arrived it was the first time a real NBA executive joined the team. It was like the Raptors became legitimate. I know Isiah was here early, but he had never done what he was doing in Toronto before. I know we had Lenny Wilkens, but a coach is different than a GM. Colangelo was viewed as the real deal. He has been given every benefit of the doubt since he arrived. Those who may have criticized him publicly or questioned his moves have been very quiet since he arrived.

Colangelo, arrived and was instantly successful. This early success added to the aura of BC. He almost became too successful too early. Expectations were too high. Imagine if after Brian Burke arrived last year the Leafs miraculously made the playoffs and won a round. Colangelo’s challenges since have, for the most part gone unmentioned in this town. The truth is, he has rebuilt this team, hired a coach, with little real result yet. His team this year has yet to find common middle ground. They are either at the top of their game or the absolute bottom. They are just never in the middle . That’s a tough nut to swallow for fans let alone the media. His team also seems to lack an identity. While Chris Bosh is the “the franchise” it isn’t like you see his face all over the city. This isn’t a knock on Bosh, more a reflection of this team… I think if they were in first or second place, going on 5-6 game winning streaks things would be different. If the team had more success, those in the media wouldn’t be able to ignore the success. The same way the Toronto Blue jays were the toast of the town jsut before and during their winning years.

So do the Raptors get a bad Rap? I don’t think so. I think that despite their 15 year history they are still a new team in search of their identity in the marketplace. If MSMers are balking at them, it’s because they don’t know the game, or they haven’t been forced to cover them as a result of winning. If the complaint is lack of coverage, isn’t that better than negative coverage? Yes, as Paul Jones said, silence is very telling, however, it is better than constant bashing or negativity. If the MSMers are doing that behind close doors, we wouldn’t know about it. I haven’t seen public evidence of what these guys speak.

To the fan who called in, I couldn’t disagree more. The Leafs, for as long as I can remember have been the whipping boy of the local media. The main reason I started TSM was that I felt and still do feel that man in the media are too negative about our teams all the time. The Leafs have been so bad for so long that any positives are magnified. The fact that they too have hired a proper GM for the first time in years is something to get excited about. When they couldn’t win a game early this year, I wouldn’t say the press was too positive (nor should they have been). The fact that the Leafs have fought back is remarkable. No one publicly predicted it. So is credit deserved for good play? Of course. The same way criticism was due during the first 20 games of the season.

Get the Raptors on a real winning streak, get them deep into the playoffs. Then let’s see what happens. Until then, at least publicly I think the jury is out.

Happy Saturday

Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

college of sports media banner Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

Big game tonight in the NFL Thursday night-er. The Indianapolis Colts (13-0) take their perfect record into Jacksonville to take on the division rival Jaguars (7-6). Earlier these two teams met in Indy and obviously the Colts won that contest, squeaking by with a 14-12 win. The Colts have won four of the last five meetings between the two teams and hold an overall 13-4 edge in the series. Just don’t count out the Jaguars just yet. Out of all the teams that in the Indy’s division Jacksonville gives them the most problems and the games typically come down to the last minute. Offensively the Jags are led by quarterback David Garrard and running back Maurice Jones-Drew. Garrard is having an average season by his own standards. He’s close to 3000 yards passing and would need only just over 600 yards over the next three weeks to eclipse his own personal best. Whats impressive about his stats is that he has a very young receiving core and is still building that bound between QB and wide out. For Jones-Drew, this is the first season he has been the feature back in the Jags attack. One time starter Fred Taylor was released in the off season and was picked up by the New England Patriots. Jones-Drew has thrived with the new role. He’s already set a career high in rushing yards (1136) and touchdowns (14). For the Colts the big question is whether or not to sit players and start resting up for the play offs. Indy has already secured the top spot in the AFC and home field advantage throughout the post season. Indy struggles with it’s running game (30th in the league) so a lot of the offensive load has been on the shoulders of quarterback Peyton Manning. Which isn’t a problem for the 12 year vet. He leads the league in passing yards (3905), attempts per game (38.6), yards per game (300.4) and trails only Drew Brees in touchdowns thrown (Manning has 29). Manning may attempt the most throws but he is also well protected. He’s only been sacked 10 times.  Manning too has dealt with receiver turnover. 13 year Colt Marvin Harrison was let go and he was replaced by second year man Pierre Garcon and rookie Austin Collie. Along with Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark they make up a formidable receiving core.

There’s a thought process out there that sitting players for the play offs is a mistake. In fact Indy has first hand experience. There have been at least two seasons when the team sat players in preparation for the post season and were knocked out early. The year the Colts had to player their starters until the end of the season they went on to win the Super Bowl. It will be interesting to see what philosophy rookie coach Jim Caldwell follows.

Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

college of sports media banner Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

The Toronto Raptors (11-15) make their first trip into Miami as they go toe-to-toe with Dwayne Wade and the Heat (11-11) tonight. The Raptors are coming off one their best defensive effort of the season. On Sunday they held the Houston Rockets to only 36.8 percent from the floor, rolling to a 101-88 victory. Hedo Turkoglu had his best performance as a Dino, scoring a season high 23 points, pulling down six boards while adding five assists. Chris Bosh continued to lead Toronto. He had 27. Jose Calderon missed another game with a hip injury and it’s highly unlikely he’ll be in the line up tonight. Jarrett Jack continues to start in his place. Since stepping in as the starter, Jack is averaging 14.8 points and 6.5 assists per game. Miami on the other hand is coming off their worst home loss this season. They got pummeled 118-90 by the Memphis Grizzlies (yes, you read that correctlyMemphis Grizzlies). The Heat are on a two game losing skid and have dropped four straight at home. To make matters worse they’ve lost three in a row to Toronto in Miami.

Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

college of sports media banner Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

On Saturday night the Leafs battled the team out of the nation’s capital south of the border, Washington, tonight they take on the team out of their nation’s capital, Ottawa. This is game three of the Battle of Ontario. Both game one and two were won by the the Senators, but in each case it was only a one goal margin. On Saturday night the Leafs got off to a typical slow start against the Capitals. Toronto trailed 2-0 going into the second period. That lead was quickly erased and by the time the horn blew to end the game, the Leafs won 6-3. The line of Phil Kessel, Matt Stajan and Alexei Ponikarovsky combined for eight points in the win. Goaltender Vesa Toskala was pretty good as well. He stopped 34 of 37 shots to earn his fourth win of the season. The Senators are coming off a big Saturday night win as well. They doubled up the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in front of their home crowd. Off season acquistion Alex Kovalev was the big star in this one. He had a hat trick to lead his team. The first goal for Kovalev was his 400th career goal. Now both teams are dealing with goaltender injuries. For the Leafs Jonas Gustavsson is still recovering from a procedure to correct an accelerated hate rate. While in Ottawa starting goalie Pascal Leclaire is still out with a broken jaw. Brian Elliott has taken over the starting role. This season, Elliott is 8-6-3 with a 2.77 goals against average. So the Leafs are looking for a couple of first tonight: a W against the Sens and a four game winning streak

Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

college of sports media banner Toronto Sports Media Game of the Night

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

It was a night of firsts for the Toronto Raptors last night. The Toronto Huskies paid a tribute to the NBA’s roots, be unveiling their Toronto Huskies retro look for the first of six games this season. Back on November 1, 1946 the Toronto Huskies played the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens in the first game of the Basketball Association of America. The Raptors beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-88, winning their third straight game for the first time this season. Guard Jarrett Jack got his first start of the season, replacing an injured Jose Calderon. Jack filled in nicely scoring 17 points and dishing out eight assists. Tonight Toronto (10-13) is back at it again. They’re in Milwaukee to take on rookie sensation Brandon Jennings and the Bucks (9-11). Milwaukee sits two games in front of Toronto in the East, but the Bucks are on a four game losing skid. Last night they were in Boston and they lost 98-89. If the vote for rookie of the year were today, Jennings would win by a land slide. He’s averaging 21 points per game and just over 5 assists per game. Back on November 14, he lit up the Golden State Warriors for 55.

On the ice, the Toronto Maple Leafs are at home to take on the New York Islanders. On Monday night, the Leafs had five even strength goals in the second period and cruised to a 5-2 win over the Atlanta Thrashers. Now the last time the Leafs played the Isles, they peppered goaltender Dwayne Roloson with 61 shots and lost in overtime 4-3. Don’t look now, but since their horrible start the Leafs have been gaining ground in the East and are only five points back of the eight seed. The Islanders are one team of five teams that stand in their way. New York played last night and they took a beat down from the Philadelphia Flyers, losing 6-2. John Tavares scored his teams lone goals. Tavares leads all rookies with 13 goals and 23 points, but has yet to register a point at the ACC.
