TSM Game of the Night

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

It’s day two of the Hunt for October and there is still one more series to get underway. The Boston Red Sox easily took the AL Wild Card and open up postseason play on the road taking on the AL West champs, the Los Angeles Angels. On paper this series looks totally lopsided leaning towards the team from Beantown. This isn’t the first time these two teams have met in the ALDS and Boston owns a 9-1 record over LA. In fact this will be the third straight year the Sox and Halos have met in the first round of the playoffs and both times Boston jumped out to a 2-0 series lead. To take it a step further tonight’s starter for the Angels, John Lackey (11-8) has lost game one both times and he’s hoping the third time is a charm. Boston sends lefty John Lester (15-8) to the mound for this one.

There are also a couple of game twos going down today.

In the first game of their series the Cliff Lee went the distance as the Philadephia Phillies topped the Colorado Rockies 5-1. Lee was dominant as he struck out five, giving up only six hits and the one earned run. He becomes only the eighth Philly in history to go the distance in the postseason. Things don’t get much easier for the Rockies, they face Cole Hammels (10-11) in game two. Aaron Cook starts for Colorado (11-6).

In the other National League series the Los Angeles Dodgers took the St Louis Cardinals 5-3 in a game that featured a playoff record thirty runner left on base. Matt Kemp and Rafael Furcal led the offensive charge for LA. Furcal had three hits, a run and RBI. Kemp hit a two run bomb off Cards starter Chris Carpenter in the first inning.  It was the first home run Carpenter had given up in ten starts. For the Cards they’ll need better production from their superstar first baseman Albert Pujols. Pujols was 0-3 with two intentional walks. With a 1-0 series lead the Dodgers turn to Clayton Kershaw (8-8). St Louis counters with Adam Wainwright (19-8).

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

Including today there are five days left in the 2008-09 Major League Baseball season and there are still four vying for two playoff spots. In the American League the New York Yankees locked up the East, the Angels took the West and not surprisingly the Boston Red Sox clinched the wild card. The only question mark is in the Central division where the Detroit Tigers hold a two game edge over the Minnesota Twins. With weather wreaking havoc on game one of their four game series, the Tigers and Twins played a double-header yesterday which they ended up splitting. So with two games left in their series the Tiger’s still hold a two game lead. Tonight Carl Pavano (13-11) goes for the Twins and Eddie Bonine (0-1) starts for the Tigers. Both teams end their season at home. Detroit plays three games against the Chicago White Sox while Minnesota battles the Kansas City Royals in a three gamer.

In the National League both the St Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers have punched their tickets into the playoffs. The Philadelphia Philles’ magic number is one to clinch the East. The Phillies have a five game lead over the Atlanta Braves. So it’s just a matter of time before their in. What is in doubt is the wild card. The Colorado Rockies went into last night holding a two game edge over the Braves. The Rox won. The Braves lost. The lead is now three. The Rockies play two more games against the Milwaukee Brewers and then finish up on the road battling the Dodgers. While the Braves play finish up their series with the Florida Marlins tonight and end their hosting four games against the Washington Nationals.

TSM Game of the Night

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

If you’re paying attention to baseball’s standings you will notice that pretty much every division in the league is locked up. The New York Yankees were the first team to punch their postseason pass and for the St Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels and Dodgers it’s just a matter of time. Even the wild card race is pretty much done. The Boston Red Sox have a seven game lead over the Texas Rangers while the Colorado Rockies have opened up a five game lead over the San Francisco Giants. Well the same cannot be said about the Detroit Tigers. They’ve been atop the AL Central for pretty much the entire season, but with a dozen games left they only have a two and a half game lead over the Minnesota Twins. Their schedule doesn’t do them any favours either. Yes they still have two more games against the Cleveland Indians (nine straight loses and counting), but then the play a three game series in Chicago against the White Sox (who would love to spoil the party) and finish up at home against – yes you guessed it – the Twins. The only way to make the playoffs is to win of course and the Tigers did last night. Edwin Jackson pitched a strong game and Detroit edged Cleveland 3-1. Tonight rookie Rick Porcello (13-9) gets the call for the Tigers. Justin Masterson (4-8) goes for the Tribe.

Minnesota used the long ball last night to keep pace with the Tigers. The Twins hit four home runs en route to a 8-6 over the White Sox. Brian Duensing (4-1) toes the rubber for the Twins. Mark Buehrle (12-9) starts for the White Sox.

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

The two best teams in the National League, the St Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers, face off tonight in game two of their three game set. The Cards got the win in the first game 3-2, thanks to another solid start from former CY Young award winner Chris Carpenter and another long ball from All Star first baseman Albert Pujols. It is safe to say that since the trade deadline there has been no team better then St Louis. In their past ten games they’ve only lost once. What was once a tight race between the Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs for supremacy atop the NL Central division has turned into a one horse race. The Cubs trail their division rivals by six games. It seems like LA has been going the other way. They still boast the best record in the NL, but since the All Star break they have struggled to win games and have seen their once enormous lead in the NL West dwindle to a four and a half game lead over the Colorado Rockies. Since his return to the Dodgers line up Manny Ramirez has been getting hits, but his power numbers are down. In his last ten games he has only one home run. Things that make you go hmm.

In tonight’s game in LA, the Dodgers turn to Chad Billingsley (11-6). Billingsley missed his last start because of a hamstring strain. St Louis hands the ball to their fifth starter, Mitchell Boggs (1-1) and for anyone wondering he is not related to Wade Boggs.

Feast Or Famine on Toronto Blue Jays Coverage

chuck ragan feast or famine Feast Or Famine on Toronto Blue Jays Coverage

Feast or famine in this city when it comes to reporters. In one corner, at least with Blue Jays we have Griffin, Blair, Elliott and Arthur in addition to a few others who can actually really write. On the other hand are the lazy Loewen’s of the world who can’t even be bothered to do any research before writing a column, or eek god, proof reading it. Before you shit on me for my shitty grammar or spelling, I don’t get paid to do this. I do it for fun. Get a load of this:

“Medicine jest

St. Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols doesn’t have any problem if drug-testers want to visit him during the off-season.

“They can come and check every place in my house, they can even come with me in my bathtub. I have nothing to hide,” Pujols told ESPN.com.

Hey, Albert, they’re not checking for rubber ducks.”

That is not, I repeat how Loewen’s article appeared in the print version of today’s paper nor the electronic version until one Greg Brady bashed the living shit out Loewen both on the radio and on twitter. Loewen had Albert as Louis, not once but twice.

Meanwhile, down the paperbox is Bruce Arthur:

“Sure, Aaron Hill started in the All-Star Game, and Halladay met Barack Obama, and … uh, OK, they’ve kind of lost 12 of 15. There’s not a lot else to be excited about. But this team has been headed for a fork in the road for a long time, and what happens with Halladay is going to send them down one road or the other. Right now, the Jays are neither an entirely young team, nor an entirely veteran team. They have a 33-year-old shortstop, a 33-year-old catcher, a 34-year-old third baseman, and a 33-year-old closer; they also have a 25-year-old DH, a 24-year-old rookie-of-the-year candidate pitcher, injured 27- and 24-year-old pitchers, and Alex Rios, who at 28, has all the maturity of a seventh grader. And in the middle, in his prime, they have Roy Halladay. He is what gives any hope of eventual contention any whiff of legitimacy. Without Roy, the rotation is just a bunch of guys who aren’t ready, who might get healthy, or who are scraping out better-than-expected results, most of the time. A bunch of arms, but no spine.”

Ding Ding Ding. Give the man a prize. This, is a completely accurate assessment of the Jays. People say Leaf nation looks at the world through blue and white colored glasses, have you ever heard a shitty thing said about any Jay prospect?????? Arthur hits more homeruns in this column than Alex Rios has hit all year.

“Last night on The Fan 590 radio, Jays interim CEO Paul Beeston mentioned to host Bob McCown and to this reporter that he had not discussed a potential contract extension with Halladay, but that he would within a week, and said money would not be an issue were Halladay amenable to such a deal. Which makes it feel like it might be Halladay, 32, who has nudged this process into motion. Before this season started, Halladay said some things that look a lot more ominous today.”

Anyone who suggests this is about money with Roy isn’t telling the whole story. The Jays would give Roy a blank check. The problem is that JP has so poorly managed his money by signing “albatross” contracts that they have no money for anyone other than Roy! Do you blame Roy for wanting to say I have given you enough chances, I no longer believe?

“If Roy goes, this team will have decided what it is, and had better damned well commit to it. No more fantasies of beating the Yankees or the Red Sox or the Tampa Bay Rays right now. No more qualified promises that maybe, if everything breaks just right, the games might mean something again, just over the next hill. Instead, go the way of the Orioles, who have young talent, and some thin strands of hope. Become the team of Adam Lind and Travis Snider and Romero, rather than of Halladay and Vernon Wells and Rios. Spend the money smarter. You can keep Halladay or move Halladay, but one way or the other, have a plan. The Toronto Blue Jays don’t have to become Kansas City or Pittsburgh or Washington, stranded and lost. They just have to find a way, one day, to avoid being counted among them.”

I agree, you can’t be half pregnant. The problem is the deals JP has signed has tied his and the next GM’s hands. It would be nice to have a faith in a GM and his plans for the team. Right now the team is stuck in neutral. Sounds like another team in Toronto used to be until they found the right GM.

Arthur is here.

College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
You do not want to miss the St Louis Cardinals visiting the New York Mets tonight at the new Shea Stadium. The Cards are coming off a sweep of the Royals and the Mets have lost two straight. The real reason to watch this game is Albert Pujols. In the series versus Kansas City he had three homeruns and 10 RBIs. Yesterday alone he hit two, including a grand slam and drove in five. Pujols leads the league in homeruns, runs batted in and is not far from the lead in batting average. Could this be the year he dons the triple crown?

Oh yeah, there is more golf to be watched at the US Open at Bethpage Black. Round four continues and by the afternoon there might be a winner. Unless of course there’s a tie and another 18 is needed. Canadian Mike Wier is still in the hunt.
