Brian Burke’s Pursuit Of Kessel Continues

September 12th, 2009 | by torontosportsmedia

Back in Toronto after a wet weekend in New York. Had a great time but man it was miserable weather wise. So here is what I am hearing this evening on the Kessel front. Burke absolutely wants him. I am told from multiple people that he has presented three different scenarios (I say scenarios because I am not sure an actual offer has been made).

The first you may have seen on the net or twitter tonight, two first round picks and a second for Kessel.
The second is a first round pick plus a top 6 forward on the Maple Leafs who the Bruins are extremely high on and may actually be insisting on in any deal for Kessel, in return the Maple Leafs may actually get a pick back plus Kessel.
The third would involve a mix of prospects and picks in exchange for Kessel.

So there you have it. Personally, I despise the first scenario. I don’t like dealing 1st round draft picks, trading 2 of them has to be for a guaranteed home run. With all due respect to Kessel, he isn’t a guaranteed homerun. I like the second one, as I am not overly in love with any of the Maple Leaf forwards enough to say untouchable. The third scenario makes little sense to me. This is the first time we may actually have any prospects, dealing them now seems way too early. I will be really pissed if Burke deals Stalberg.

Word on the street is that Kessel will be dealt early this week and likely no later than Wednesday. We shall see I guess, but it could get very interesting around here over the next couple of days.

The first and third scenarios are absolutely terrible. When i read on ESPN that Toronto offered 2, 1st round picks i spit out my drink. The second scenario is very good as long as its not a young top 6 or prospect. If burke can convince Chiralli to take Stajan and a first and a third then we could also put in an offer for dubinsky. That would be in a perfect world.

If you think Stajan equals a 1st rounder, then you must be spitting Jeagermiester…………in most cases I would also be totally against dealing 1st rounders, especially with the Leaf track record, but it won’t be a lottery pick with this team, maybe 15th.I also think Burke will stock up with picks in deadline deals this year,we could recoup a 1st.

  3. LeafFan1989 says:

I never said Stajan was worth a first. At best he’s worth a second and that’s why he should be enough.

  4. Garrett Bauman says:

The Bruins need defensive depth more than they need forward depth … they have a number of young forwards ready to make the jump but are lacking in blueline depth. They need someone mobile back there more than anything else. In that context, scenario two makes more sense if it is the 1st rdr plus a defender headed to Boston, probably with a prospect added to the deal also.

Please explain to me how in the blue hell Burke is potentially offering 2 1sts AND a 2nd rounder instead of just signing kessel and paying the 1-2-3 pick price?

Please fill me in, this is confusing.

  6. Eggbert says:

LeafFan1989: Your proposed deal only made a degree of sense if the player was 1st round pick level, otherwise why would the Bruins choose it over 2 first round picks and a 3rd?

I’m guessing Grabowsky and at least a first, after Burke gets up from rolling around laughing, he should sign the guy to a 4 year for 22 mil offer sheet. Check. Boston matches they can’t move him for a year. Or Burke gets him at a fair price. Check and mate.

  8. Eggbert says:

Damn the torpedos! sign the guy and give them the 1,2,3
I’m not sold on this guy,but we have taken ourselves out of top 10 pick territory anyway, and he’s young

  9. I’ve said it before and will say it again Stalberg; Bozak and Tlusty are the bait here ( not all together but maybe one or two)

Has to be enticing enough for Boston that they don’t look like they walked away from a sure fire thing (theoretically) like Kessel in order to make a trade.

Remember Nashville is in this thing too.
