Summer must really be almost over, all the hockey talking heads are coming back from vacation. Darren Dreger weighed in on the Sundin matter this evening, saying that Sundin doesn’t have the zest for the game anymore and that he is strongly leaning towards retiring. Dreger said that Sundin’s advisers are trying to talk him out of it (hello….$$$$$, what a surprise) and that they are trying to convince him that he doesn’t have the zest for playing hockey in Toronto (what a surprise)
Apparently they are telling him to take his time, not to use the R (retirement) word right now and that should he get the itch back anytime he can come back….. How soon they forget this quote from Sundin right?”
“I have never believed in the concept of a rental player. It is my belief that winning the Stanley Cup is the greatest thing you can achieve in hockey but for me, in order to appreciate it you have to have been part of the entire journey and that means October through June. I hope everyone will understand and respect my decision.”
So how could Mats join a team in November and still be a part of it? Right?
Anyways, cause retirement isn’t much of a good news story Dreiger said that Toronto is still in the mix (yawn) but so are the Rangers and…….The Islanders. Dreger claims they have a ton of cap room, they don’t need to make any moves to sign him and Garth Snow is being very persistent. I think the whole hockey world would be stunned if ended up on the Island…but stranger things have happened before.
Dreger said the Canucks are very unlikely given their travel (and hello Hanky, the Canucks are hot after Mathieu Schneider).
Oh well, maybe the stronger drum beatings mean that Sundin is going to announce he isn’t going to make a decision for a while and then hopefully Cliff will say Adieu.
