With roughly 65 games left in the MLB season tonight’s battle in the Bronx may end up being the deciding factor on who reigns supreme in the American League East.
In one corner you, wearing white with blue pinstripes, you have the New York Yankees. Winners of there last three and the top team in the division. The season started off poorly for the Yanks, but since the return of Alex Rodiguez from hip surgery one could argue that this New York team is the best offensive team in the league. In only 272 at-bats, A Rod has pounded 19 home runs and driven in 60. This season things are different for Rodriguez, he’s not expected to shoulder the offensive load. helping him out is Mark Teixeira. Teixeira has been everything the Yanks wanted out of him. He leads the team with 27 long balls and 80 RBIs.
In the other corner, wearing grey accented with red lettering, are the Boston Red Sox. Boston limps in this one, loser of their last two games (thanks to the Tampa Bay Rays) and without one of their number one guy. Jason Bay, the man responsible for making Manny Ramirez nothing but a distant memory to the Bo-Sox faithful, has re-injured a hamstring injury and may be available for the final game of the series. Bays bat will be missed in the line up. He leads the team with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs. Tonight will be the first time that newly-acquired Victor Martinez gets his first taste of this bitter division rivalry.
So round one has John Smoltz (2-4) facing off against Joba Chamberlain (7-2). Gentlemen I want a fair fight, listen for the whistle and may the best man win.
