College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
Two high profile women got bounced yesterday from the Rogers Cup as the tournament rolls into its third round. During the day number one seeded Dinara Safina committed 17 double faults en route to a three set lose. In the last game of the evening Ana Ivanovich won her first set, but fell apart in the last two leading to her second round exit.
At the grandstand the action today will be intense. Starting off the day will be a tightly contested battle between Shahar Peer and fourth seeded Elena Dementieva. Serena Willimas takes the court next and she’ll be able to exact a little revenge for her sister’s lose. She plays Alona Bondarenko, who’s sister Kateryna bounced Venus on Monday. Kateryna is actually on the court next. She faces the 14-th seed, Agnieszka Radwanska. In the night session Maria Sharapova continues her run through the tourney. Her opponent is fellow Russian and the seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva. The match of the day will also be the last. Number five seed Jelena Jankovic is in tough versus the wild card Kim Clijsters. Clijsters came out of retirement this season and is no stranger to the upper echelons of the WTA. She’s won each tennis major at least once and in 2003 was the number one ranked women in the world.
