College of Sports Media Game of the Night:

The Colorado Rockies have opened up a three game lead on the San Francisco Giants and the rest of the wannabees in the race for the Wild Card spot. Today the Rox wrap up a four game set at home against the Giants. So far Colorado has take two out of three and are looking to create even more distance. Last night San Fran’s ace and probable repeat CY Young winner Tim Lincecum was rolling until the seventh inning when Seth Smith bombed a two run homer giving the Rockies the lead for good. One of the reasons Colorado has had so much success this season has been because of their pitching rotation. As of this weekend the Rockies sit twelfth in the league with a ERA of 4.23. Their also the only team in the majors who have four pitchers with double digits wins. One of those pitchers, Jason Marquiz (14-8), who’s tied atop for most wins in the NL gets the start for Colorado. He’ll be up against the Giant’s Barry Zito.

The Rockies have also added a little power to their line up as well. They picked up former Oakland Athletic Jason Giambi. Giambi will start with their Triple A squad and has a chance to be called up when MLB rosters get expanded to 40 on September 1st. Although Giambi was only hitting .193 in 83 games his play off experience and power from the left side of the plate will be welcome additions to the Rockies lineup.
