Is Brian Burke About To Pull The Trigger?

Hey quick post this evening folks. I am not a rumor monger, but the drum beats are loud again this evening that something is up in Maple Leaf land. Several reliable sources are telling me that Burke is very close to a deal that has nothing to do with Phil Kessel. I am hearing that a deal is close to being consummated that would see Burke dealing a defenceman for either a prospect or a draft pick. I have no clue which defenceman could be on the move, one “source” told me he thought it was Mike Van Ryn, however that would surprise me given his health record in the past. Why would a GM take on that salary and give either a pick or a prospect?

In any event, there seems to be a consensus of those close to Burke that indeed something is about to be done.

More later

Burke’s dilemma on D is interesting. If he cant move Kaberle (either due to NTC or no compelling deal on the table) what are his options? Frogren is an easy pick for the guy that goes to the minors. Assume none of the new guys are going anywhere. Finger is likely too expensive to be of interest to anyone (but the best one for us to try to move based on the number of defensive defencemen we have), White is cheap and likely the type of character that he’d like to keep around…So to your comment above, that leaves Van Ryn…A healthy Van Ryn has the ability to put up some points which the team could use….Has anyone heard a word about his health status? There were rumours early in the summer that his career might be over. If in fact he is healthy enough to play – and he is the guy to move…I don’t see us getting much…late pick at best…unless he is with the club in pre-season and looks strong – but then we’d want to keep him – circular argument 🙂

This will be a tough one for Burke. What does everyone else think?

Why does everyone want Van Ryan gone?before he got hurt he was the best Leaf defenceman offensively and defensively. If it is because he has gotten hurt in the past doesn’t mean he will get hurt in the future(and if thats the case other teams would be wary of trading for him in the first place). All I know is that he was brilliant when he played.Get rid of Frogren and Exleby!!!

@ChuChu….Of course it’s not out of the realm of possibility but…i have a hard time seeing Burke commit to the three new d-men and now trading them…they are supposed to be pieces of the new direction/style…But you are right, it’s always possible…..

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
