“Former Raptor Joey Graham has a new home with the Denver Nuggets.
The Nuggets signed the veteran forward to its training camp roster Saturday.
Graham averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 275 games with the Toronto Raptors, who originally selected him as the 16th overall pick in the 2005 draft.
Graham is making the move straight from the Raptors, which kept him through the 2008-09 season.
Graham’s addition gives the Nuggets 17 players on the camp’s roster.”
It’s good to see Joey find a home, though his contract is apparently for less than $1 million and non-guaranteed. Still, I’ll bet he makes the team out of training camp, and I continue to believe Graham is perfect for 6-8 minutes off the bench.
I’ve written before that I wanted the Raps to bring him back. My point back then, which I still believe, is that he was used beyond his capabilities in the past. Toronto has always been thin at the swingman position, and starting a guy like Graham is simply unfair.
But, as we’ve seen with Good Joey, the man can bring energy and athleticism. When I wrote that post, some of the comments indicated a willingness to have Graham signed at $1.5 million, or almost double what he’s getting in Denver. In the current market, players are being signed cheap, and I really believe Joey will be a steal, and a valuable end-of-the-bench sub this season.
