College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
On Saturday night Jonas Gustavsson started his first game since undergoing a second procedure for an accelerated heart beat. Gustavsson was solid in his return stopping all 25 Boston Bruins’ shots en route to a 2-0 win and his first ever shut out. His return is also good news for the Maple Leafs as they had lost two straight with a suspect Vesa Toskala in net. On Wednesday they were trounced 6-2 at home by the Phoenix Coyotes and on Friday the Leafs got dumped 5-2 in Buffalo by the Sabres. In Friday night’s game Toskala shakiness was at an all-time high as he let a floater from the blue line bounce out of his glove and trickle into the net. Toronto gets another crack at Buffalo tonight at the ACC. It’ll be the fourth game against their Peace Bridge rivals. Buffalo has won all three thanks to the play of their goalie Ryan Miller. If awards were handed out today, Miller would win the Vezina by a landslide. He leads the league in most goaltending categories (GAA, save percentage and shut outs). Buffalo is coming off a lose and has lost two of its last three. On Saturday night the Sabres watched the Peguins march into Buffalo and leave with a 2-1 shoot out win. For the Leafs to have any chance tonight they will need to get to Miller early and often. If Miller has a chance to settle into the game, Toronto will struggle to get pucks past him.
