College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
The battle for the top spot in the Western Conference goes down tonight as the San Jose Sharks are in Chicago to take on the Blackhawks. This is the third meeting between these two teams and right now the Blackhawks own a 2-0 edge. In fact the last time they met Chicago lay a 7-2 beating on the boys from San Jose. Chicago comes into this one riding a four game winning streak. The last win was on Sunday when then ‘Hawks blanked the Detroit Red Wings 3-0. Goaltender Cristobal Huet turned away 20 shot in the win and earned his second straight shut out. Huet’s play as of late also earned him NHL First Star of the Week accolades. Offensively Chicago is seventh in the league in goals for and leads everyone in short-handed tallies. They also have five players that have reach double-digits in goals. One of those five, Jonathan Toews leads the team with 10 goals and 24 assists. San Jose comes into this one winners of their last two. Yesterday the Sharks took a 4-2 bite out of the Dallas Stars. The trio of Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley continue to lead the team. In Monday’s win, Marleau scored twice and Heatley had a couple of helpers. Overall they’ve combined for 53 goals and 74 assists (Marleau – 23G/16A, Thornton – 9G/40A, Heatley – 21G/18A) in only 36 games. A win tonight would go a long way for the Sharks. Not only would it help heal the wounds of two previous losses, but it would also eliminate any psychological advantage Chicago may have if these two meet up in the playoffs.
