College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
Two of the top teams in the East go at it tonight as New Jersey Devils are in our nation’s capital to battle the Ottawa Senator. Ottawa comes into this one as the fifth seed in the Conference and riding a six game winning streak. Since Daniel Alfredsson, Milan Michalek and most recently Jason Spezza returned from injury the offence has gotten back on track. More importantly the Sens have been getting some great goaltender from Newmarket native, Brian Elliott. On Monday Elliott was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week, winning four straight starts while posting a .957 save percentage. Elliott will need to be steady tonight, as his offence will need all the help they can get. The New Jersey Devils have given up the fewest goals in the NHL (109). Not a surprising stat, seeing that they have future hall-of-famer Martin Brodeur in net. Brodeur leads the league in shut outs (7), wins (31) and is top five in goals against average (2.17). The Devils are a perfect example of why good goaltending is important. They’re 24th in the league in total goals, but still sit atop the Atlantic division (69) points and only trail the Washington Capitals by three points for supremacy in the East.
