College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
There must be a glitch somewhere in the NHL scheduling matrix. Tonight two Eastern conference rivals will face off for the first time, more then half way through the season and including this evening will battle each other three times in seven nights. What?!? The struggling (this is an understatement) Toronto Maple Leafs limp into the Garden State to tangle with the New Jersey Devils. The Leafs have lost four straight games and are 2-7-1 in their last ten games. Toronto’s last win was 11 days ago when the beat the Nashville Predators 4-3 in the Music City. Things have gotten so bad Jamal Mayers and Garnet Exelby are demanding trades. Granted they want off the bus because of how little playing time they’re getting, not because of the performance of the team. Although the Devils are sitting in a much better position in the standings they come into this one riding a two game losing streak. On Tuesday night New Jersey was blanked 3-0 by a red-hot Ottawa squad and Wednesday night they lost 2-1 in the shoot out to the Buffalo Sabres. The Devils biggest problem is putting pucks in the net – they’re 22nd in the league in scoring. Perhaps a visit from the team that’s given up the most goals in the league, Toronto, may exercise some of those scoring demons for the Devils.
