College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
It’s day 12 of the Vancouver Olympic games and for most Canadians the biggest event of the day will take place on the ice. I doubt that Steve Yzerman and his Team Canada management team planned for things to go this way, but their Men’s hockey team will battle Germany tonight in a playoff qualifier. The winner faces Russia in the quarterfinals. Roberto Luongo will start between the pipes for the Canucks. Should Luongo play well tonight there is no doubt he’ll get the call again versus the Russians. Five events will end with distribution of Olympic hardware today. Cypress mountain features the Women’s ski cross. Whistler has the Men’s giant slalom. The women will be battling in the 4 X 6 km biathlon relay. In the nordic combined it’s all about team work as the team ski jump and cross country take place. It will be a true test of endurance on skates as the men go blade-to-blade in the long track 10 000 m event. Plenty of curling action as well. Cheryl Bernard and her team play twice today. They’re currently going into the extra end tied 5-5 with Great Britain. Tonight they take on the Russians. Kevin Martin and his men take on China this afternoon. Tonight the ladies will complete the short program of their event. Canada’s Joannie Rochette will be skating with a heavy heart since losing her mother two days ago. Rochette will be joined by teammate Cynthia Phaneuf to take on the rest of the world for figure skating dominance.
