College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
Last week the Washington Capitals had a ten point lead in the race for the NHL Presidents’ trophy. Since then the top team in the West, the San Jose Sharks, have won four straight and pulled within five points of East leading Capitals. San Jose is idle tonight, so Washington has a chance to stretch their lead. It’s the battle of Nation capitals tonight south of the border as the Ottawa Senators battle the Capitals. The Sens have a 2-1 edge in the season series so far. Ottawa comes into this one on a roll. They’ve won four straight and sit comfortably in the fifth spot in the East. Both Montreal and Philadelphia, who’re tied for sixth and seventh, are five points back of Ottawa. Ottawa’s a little rested for this one as well. They last played on Saturday night when they tamed the Florida Panthers en route to a 3-2 win. Washington on the other hand has only the Presidents’ trophy to play for. They’ve wrapped up first seed in their Conference and have home ice advantage for the length of their run in the postseason. There’s no way coach Bruce Boudreau will let this team back into the playoffs so don’t expect the Caps to take any nights off. Especially with question marks between the pipes Boudreau is looking to see which goalie’s going to separate himself from the pack and lead the Caps into a long playoff run.
