College of Sports Media Game of the Night:
The Toronto Blue Jays play their home opener tonight, riding a five game winning streak, as they welcome the Chicago White Sox to the Rogers Centre. It’s been somewhat of a surprising start to the season for the Blue Birds. They took two of three from their opening series against the Texas Rangers and followed that up with a three game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles. Many experts predicted a tough year for the Jays and although no one is planning a World Series parade route it’s nice to see the team on top of the AL East (they’re tied with Detroit for the best record in the AL). The starting pitching has been pretty good – they’ve gotten two quality starts out of Shawn Marcum and the bullpen has been better then average. Good things come in threes for reliever Casey Janssen. He leads the league with 3 wins, has pitched three innings and has an ERA – you guessed it – 3.00. More importantly the Jays have been winning games in the late innings. Out of their five wins three have been because of rallies in the top of the eighth or ninth innings. Female fans are especially happy because the the Jays have been hitting a lot of home runs and everyone knows – chicks dig the long ball. Early in the season it’s not Adam Lind or Aaron Hill cranking them either. Alex Gonzalez and the 126 million dollar man Vernon Wells lead the team with 4 a piece. Tonight Brain Tallet 1-0 gets the call on opening night. He’ll be up against Chicago’s big off season acquisition Jake Peavy. On yeah – former Jay Alex Rios is back in the building – so if you’re going down to the game make sure you let him know how much you miss having in the Jays line up….
