Brian Burke To Join TSM Pressbox!

Big news folks, we have just confirmed that Toronto Maple Leafs President and GM, Brian Burke will be an upcoming guest on the TSM Pressbox. I am going to ask Brian some questions that we don’t usually hear so I would love to know what topics you would like me to try to cover. No guarantees that I will get to all (or any) but I am willing to consider anything REASONABLE. This website has always been about those of you kind enough to drop by on a regular basis so let me know your thoughts and we will go from there!

1.Does he think Pro Sports leagues should have salary caps, or should each team be able to spend to what they can afford?

2. If a player is sent to the minors on an NHL contract (ie Jeff Finger) I know the salary comes off the NHL cap, but does the player still have salary escrow come off his pay while he is in the minors? If not, would teams not be doing a player “a favor” by sending him to the minors if he is not going to play?

3. What does he think of the American Needle decision

1. Does it bother you a little bit knowing that you could have had the 2nd overall pick?
2. If you still had the pick which player would you select out of Hall or Seguin?
3. Toronto has a good amount of salary space available this summer with some tinkering and moves, would you consider spending big bucks on that big available center this summer or would trading be the better option.

Questions for Burke:

1) Last summer you upgraded your goaltending (add Gustavsson, subtract CuJo), upgraded your defence (add Komisarek & Beauchemin) and upgraded your forwards (add a sniper like Kessel without giving up anything off of the active roster) and yet the team performed much worse than the year before. How is that possible? Is it fair that the guys that you “shipped out of town on airplanes” in January are getting most of the blame? Maybe the coaching staff deserves more blame than they are getting?

2) You have gone out of your way to give praise to JFJ (complimenting him for drafting guys like Kulemin & Gunnarsson, complimenting him for including trade windows in Kaberle’s no-trade clause, etc). If he is as smart as you say he is then why is it taking several years to undo the damage that he did to the roster?

1) What does he think of the job that Gary Bettman is doing and does he have any suggestions that he would like to share as to how to keep increasing the overall growth (revenue dollars/tv viewership/gate attendance specifically) for the NHL?

2) Can’t help but notice that Peddy & Tanenbaum don’t seem to be as quotable as they used to be, less media articles written, less public/media appearances. Has Burke had any influence on this? (which is a GREAT improvement, imo)

3) Name his top 3 priorities as he heads into the 2010-2011 NHL Season.

4) What is his measure of success for next year? How long will he wait during the season if it appears that success is unlikely before he does something ‘drastic’ or is he always against knee jerk reactions?

5) What has he learned or taken away from the most about in the current playoffs that he will consider going into next season? Has he found anything that would change his current belief process of how to build a winning team?

6) Who has he been cheering for these playoffs?

7) At what point do you walk away from contract negotiations and from experience is it usually the dollar amount or the length of the contracts that are the generally the hardest to agree upon?

8) Not a question, just something to share: I can tell you multiple Leaf fans and even non-Leaf fans that know Hockey really believe that you will make our beloved team a winner again. Thank-you so much for joining the team, for your hard work & dedication and willingness to shake things up, and for taking calculated risks that hopefully pay off in the end – we wish you the best in all that you do!!!

Ask him if he would like to come up to my children’s residential summer camp in Algonquin Park during our staff training week to talk to our staff about team work, reaching for goals, and making a different in kids lives… or anything else he think he can impart on our staff before campers arrive. Then he can see camp and will likely want to do part of Leafs training camp or pre-season regime on our wite as well. Good luck.
