New York Post In On Kaberle Talk

That didn’t take long now did it. A little over 24 hours since the Stanley Cup was handed out and the first “real” trade speculation has hit a “reputable” newspaper. The New York Post, in today’s paper is reporting that the New Jersey devils are interested in Tomas Kaberle:

“sources say general manager Lou Lamoriello may be among the strongest bidders for Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle.”

Now, it’s not a specific rumor per se, but banter is banter right!

“Kaberle, whom general manager Lou Lamoriello could be targeting, has been a regular trade subject in Toronto at the usual deal junctures, but Leafs GM Brian Burke recently circulated an e-mail to other general managers outlining the upcoming window in Kaberle’s no-trade clause.

Kaberle, 32, is to make $4.25 million next season, the last on his deal before he becomes unrestricted in 2011. The Devils will be making a decision on Paul Martin, who becomes unrestricted July 1 after earning $4.5 million last year. One other possibility is Dan Hamhuis, who also becomes unrestricted on July 1.”

I have one major problem with this “rumor”, can you tell me the last time anything leaked actually happened with the NJ Devils? Lou Lamoriello runs an incredibly tight ship. Usually, Lou moves in stealth mode. Now could this be an agent talking? Could this be a GM or executive with another team yapping? Maybe it’s an agent. Hell, maybe it’s someone within the Leafs trying to drum up interest in Kaberle….

“Many believe the Leafs are willing to trade Kaberle during a window which begins at the draft, two weeks from tomorrow, through July. It’s believed Toronto wants a young regular and a draft pick. The Devils do not have a first-round pick at this year’s draft, having dealt it to Atlanta in the Ilya Kovalchuk trade in February. Because of that deal’s swap of second-round picks, their first selection will be the 38th overall pick. The lack of a first-round selection could limit the chances of making such a deal.”

So, Leaf fans, if a deal were to be made, what would you expect the least REASONABLE and I mean REASONABLE return for Kaberle would be from the Devils?

    Clarkson, Tedenby, 3rd round pick

Does not really fit, no first and their best young forward, Tedenby, is not a Burke style player.

If they want to give up Travis Zajac, lets go, but I cant see that.

Hobo…if Burke can move Grabs with Kabs than he will have pulled another rabbit out of a hat….Don’t see it but would love that to happen. RFA’s Ryan and Pavelski were rumoured at one point but they were likely bogus rumours…but man I’d be all over those guys….There was a rumour a while back that the Wings were going to take a shot at Kabs with their late 1st round pick…but it was tied to Rafalski retiring due to personal issues…haven’t heard anything on this for some time. Burke would be wise to do his best to work with a team that Kabs would consider signing an extension….more comes back.
