The final day of group play is over and the results aren’t really surprising. But, looking ahead to the knock-out round, there are some clear winners.
Brazil and rival Portugal played to a 0-0 draw today, allowing both teams to advance. The game wasn’t very exciting at all; the effort and passion was lacking on both ends of the field. Portugal played great defense minus a few rare plays but had little offensive spark. Brazil meanwhile, didn’t seem like itself; the normally creative play-making team looked tired and uninterested.
Neither team needed a victory to advance so they played a very conservative game. Smart move for both teams but the game was terribly boring to watch.
Ivory Coast finished the tournament on a high note, crushing North Korea 3-0.
In Group H, Spain defeated Chile 2-1 this afternoon, still, both teams moved on. David Villa was amazing for the Euro champs, scoring his third goal of the tournament. Chile played a lot better than expected and rightfully earned a spot in the next round. Unfortunately, they have the pleasure of taking on Brazil which will be a tough task.
Spain will battle Portugal in what could be the most exciting match in South Africa. (Or, it could be a complete bore like Portugal against Brazil) Spain has too much talent and skill on its team to fall to the Portuguese. Villa has been a threat in every game and Fernando Torres hasn’t even reached his full potential. After finally scoring for Portugal against North Korea last week, Cristiano Ronaldo was virtually invisible once again. Ronaldo and his team will be the next power house sent packing in tears.
