We go back to the AL East, with the New York Yankees versus the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field 7:10 PM ET. Last night, the Yankees suffered a tough loss in extra innings when Tampa’s Reid Brignac took Sergio Mitre yard in the 11th inning to give the Rays a 1-0 win. The victory put Tampa Bay into sole possession of first place in the AL East, leaving the Yanks a half game back. This is the first time the Rays have been on top of the division since August 3. New York on the other hand, are losers of seven of eight and are trying to avoid their first five game losing streak since May 2 to 7, 2009.
Tampa will have Matt Garza (14-8, 3.68 ERA) pitching tonight, Garza in one start versus the Yankees this year has a no decision with 5.14 ERA in seven innings, he allowed five hits and four earned runs with seven strikeouts. Garza is 7-2 with a 3.24 ERA at the Tropicana this year. He has also set a career high in wins already in 2010 with 14, in his last outing Garza was lit up for six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings against the Red Sox on Wednesday.
New York will send out Ivan “Super” Nova (1-0, 2.92 ERA) on the mound, the rookie has done a great job in his four start for the Yanks. In 24.2 innings Nova has 17 strikeouts while only walking six, with the Yankees winning three of those four games. In Nova’s last start he struck out six and walked two, while holding the Orioles to two runs on six hits in a no decision. This will be Nova’s first career start against Tampa Bay and at Tropicana Field.
