Texas Rangers vs Tampa Bay Rays @ Tropicana Field on Sportsnet, 8:07 PM ET
Texas: LP Cliff Lee (1-0, 1.29 ERA)
Tampa: LP David Price (0-1, 5.40 ERA)
Reason to watch: This has been the series to watch so far in the playoffs, with home field advantage being rendered useless with both teams winning in their opposing teams park. Other than Phillies Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee may be the best pitcher in baseball. Something that I’ve mentioned from time to time here on TSM.com is Lee’s absurd command of his pitches, walking only 18 batters in 212.1 innings this year, well the 32 year old in seven inning last Wednesday allowed one earned run, striking out 10 walking none on 104 pitches. Another strong performance again tonight and Lee is setting himself up to be a very rich man come winter time. Expect the entire AL East and NL West to come knocking on Mr. Lee’s door all with fat contracts in hand.
Tampa’s starter David Price didn’t get off on the right foot in his first playoff start. In 6 2/3 innings Price allowed four earned runs including two home runs ( a Nelson Cruz blast that would still be going if the Trop wasn’t indoors) struck out eight while walking none. Look for the former No.1 overall pick in 2007 to put forth a better effort tonight.
Rays first baseman Carlos Pena came in to the series hitting below the mendoza line has been on fire for the Tampa so far, he’s batting .400 with four RBIs. Pena’s has hit for the cycle in his at bats with a single, double, a triple and a HR in the series. While center-fielder B.J. Upton continues to struggle at the plate hitting .176 with two RBIs.
