Blair discussed the Jays managerial options in the 10 o’clock hour today, and it reminded me why I think he has a lot of potential as a Fan employee. He offers really excellent, unique insights on certain topics. And, I really think he might be the most knowledgeable baseball guy in the Toronto media. I found that hour to be excellent.

I think he just needs a cohost and a better format. His show does not sound good when he does a topic like ‘What do you think of the Leafs’ or ‘what team do you hate the most’ and then tries to be edgy and argumentative with the callers. As a broadcaster, he’s not polished enough to just aimlessly take calls, in my opinion.

A show with only one host that takes three hours of calls would be challenging for even veteran broadcasters. I think it’s crazy to expect a fairly green newspaper guy to be able to pull it off. Hopefully The Fan adjusts that shows format, because I do think he could be an asset similar to Brunt on PTS if he’s used correctly.

I happen to tune in to the first part of the segment during the interview and Blair was quite good. Similarly he was on Prime Time tonight and was equally good. It is clear that baseball is his strength and he is quite capable as “sideman”.

I can’t agree more that he needs a co-host and grooming to become a true radio personality. I think that Arthur has more of the tools to match Brunt, but in the right format Blair’s curmudgeon act works. I do enjoy his participation in the PTS roundtables.

Clearly the new format would be challenging for a practiced host and does work against him. However, based on the lead in to the segment the contrary, combative personality is what the fan is developing for him. It was something about having to talk slow and dumb down his comments …

I am also noticing on both TV broadcasts and on radio Greg Zaun seems to have an aptitude for the broadcast media

once Blair overcomes his propensity for pregnant pauses and … um … (sigh) … i don’t know …. yeah … here’s what i think … (sigh) … … …. then i think he’ll be fine. he was excellent as a blue jays reporter, and with another year or two he will become credible commenting on other sports.

the curmudgeon act, on the other hand, should be dropped as soon as possible. that said, i would be grumpy too if the globe photo staff could not manage to take a decent photo of me.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
