What a depressing time we find ourselves in, in Leafs Land (I refuse to use the rip off name Leafs Nation).  I, for one, do not believe that the current roster is as bad as the record (I’m sure many of you will disagree).  To me, this is where leadership really matters….the team captain (or leadership group) and coaching staff.  So far, we’ve seen nothing from either to show me that we have the right people in those roles…Especially the coaching staff.  My comment may be viewed as simply piling on the coach like the rest of the fan base and media but….I truly believe that top coaching staffs (and player leadership) can make a difference – especially during losing skids.  Whether its line combination changes, game plan adjustments (especially specialty team play) or one on one conversations to re-focus a player that is “off” his game…it’s times like these that they truly earn their pay.  Leadership can’t allow a team that looks so good in 1 period fall apart in the 3rd period (Oilers game).

The most significant line-up change tonight is moving Phil Kessel to centre.  I hope I’m proven wrong but man, this move makes no sense to me.  Goaltending aside, your Centermen is the most important player on the ice…the forward that has the most responsibility offensively and defensively.  Does that align with Kessel’s skills?  Is that what Kessel needs to get going?  Kessel is the type of player that shouldn’t have the puck…his job is to fly around the ice, find the openings…get the pass in scoring position and put the puck in the net.  Even if Wilson get’s lucky tonight and it pays off – I still can’t figure out the move.  Another bad coaching move.

Thankfully Armstrong returns…that should help.  Jay Rosehill has been called up and will put Mitchell in the Leafs box.
