I Don’t Like Mondays

Oddly enough, now that I have kids, I find that I look forward to Mondays. I happened to hear the old classic by the Boomtown Rats today so, there you go.

Couple of random things tonight:

First, let me set the record straight. I am not ripping Jolly Old Jonas over at 640. We have very similar names, and that’s the beginning, middle and end of it. I can’t tell you how many people I know tell me that they love listening to me on the radio (they know me but obviously have no clue what my voice sounds like).

I am told that Jim Ralph will be hosting the Bill Watters Show tomorrow. No offense to Ralph, but WOW does that ever tell you what 640 thinks about the drive home show. Ralph does colour on Leafs games. He’s not a radio show host. If ever there was a clear sign of the white flag being waved this has to be it.

Many of you have asked, and I don’t have definitive answers, but I am told that Claude Feig will be handling the updates from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on TSN Radio when it launches this week.

A name that I am sure is in the mix of things over at TSN has to be Steve Simmons. He was on the Fan years ago and is good on the Reporters with the guy who should still be hosting HNIC.

Did anyone else have great difficulty watching the Leafs game Saturday night? I just couldn’t do it.

Years back I asked this question about the Toronto Maple Leafs: Would the Leafs get ripped for not spending to the cap? There is no way they would cut ticket prices, so, do they instead have to spend to the cap irrespective of performance? If we continue to spend top dollar, don’t they in turn have the same obligation?

Interesting that Damien brings up the same point in his most recent column:

“The Burke regime’s emphasis on youth is smart, and patience is crucial. At the same time, however, the Leafs spent millions under the salary cap this season and Joffrey Lupul was the only significant in-season addition.

Remember, when Jeff Finger was dumped in the minors last fall, Burke told the hockey world the idea was to use the cap space ($3.5 million) to add talent. But it never happened. In fact, more big salaries were deleted later in the season, including Francois Beauchemin, Kris Versteeg and Tomas Kaberle.

And everybody in Leaf Nation is okay with this?”

I am surprised that it has taken this long for the Leafs to be ripped for not spending to the cap.

There is one point that Damien makes, that others did as well, that I just couldn’t agree with more:

“GM Brian Burke, for starters, has made it clear he not only wants Ron Wilson back as head coach, he wants to make sure the coach’s delicate constitution isn’t bothered by having to work his magic without a safety net, otherwise known as a contract extension.

That’s a mistake. Wilson should have to earn that extension by getting the team to the playoffs. If he can’t do that, he’s the wrong guy.

Wilson has 619 NHL victories but needs an extension to sleep at night? Baloney.”

I said in my last article, I don’t get this whole lame duck argument at all.

Best article I read all weekend? The Star article on Charles Tator (admission, I too went to the same summer camp!) Hat tip to Randy Starkman for shedding some light on the guy that many in the neanderthal part of hockey have claimed is trying to ruin hockey.

Special congrats to the boys on the NT White Novice Team. After a challenging beginning of the season they did their coaches and parents proud sweeping the best 2/3 championship series this weekend. Little TSM and all the boys played their best and we couldn’t ask for more than that.
