Theory on Teachers intended sale of MLSE:
Is it possible that the Teachers may be aware of the fact that in the near future another team will be placed in the Southern Ontario Market? Clearly over the past 10-15 years the Leafs have benefitted from Gary Bettman blocking any potential movement of a team to the Southern Ontario market to the benefit of both MLSE and the Buffalo Sabres. Everyone acknowledges that if the issue of Protected Marketplace/territory ever went to court that the NHL would lose and thus they have prevented this from happening. The Phoenix/Nashville attempts by Balsillie were clearly blocked despite far better financial offers on the team by Balsillie.

Now that Buffalo has a very stable, very wealthy, and very keen “Hockey Guy” owner. My theory is Gary is now willing to sell that Bluechip lottery winning franchise in the Southern Ontario market. Rather than have one of these franchises move there without his control through the courts, he needs to sell this franchise on his terms.

Thus Teachers sees potentially a less profitable product with competition and sell now when the price is the highest it will be for the forseeable future.

Gary owes all the other owners in the league some money for how badly Phoenix has gone. This is his repayment to them for his new contract etc…. (many reasons)

Sorry for the length of this post, thoughts anyone?

The teachers lost a considerable amount of money on stocks etc…when the economic downturn hit. Today, they’re facing a shortfall because people (their members) are living longer. Living longer is a good thing, unless you’re in the business of paying out pensions 🙂

They’re paying $1.8 billion more each year than they receive in contributions. Bottom line is, they need an infusion of cash badly, and MLSE stock will never be worth more than it is now. It’s smart business for them to sell. If it wasn’t, they’d hold the asset. Another team in the GTA won’t put a dent in MLSE’s revenue.

A really small thing that I enjoy – the Mike Richards show will splice in post-game interview audio clips from the big playoff games the night before.

they did this the other day for Mavs/Ok City game 1 and I thought it was amazing ….. especially for the late start/western conference games that we don’t all watch entirely.

I would gladly take a 15 minute NBA roundup with audio clips than regurgitating the same stuff in another interview segment.

I think Chris makes some great points. To argue that another team in T.O would not cut into MLSE profits, I think is a little short sighted. Ticket revenue, TV and radio money I don’t think would be affected but if there was another team they would have to build a new arena and fill dates. ACC, if I’m not wrong is one of the busiest buildings in North America and with competition in town that would have to cut into profits. I also think merchandising would take a big hit. Just some thoughts.

Saw where Jose Bautista had another one of his great games again.
Hope that he can keep it going.
The Toronto Blue Jays need anything that he can give them.
Hopefully, He won’t be trade bait mid-season.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
