I was listening to TSN Radio between 1 and 2pm today for the first time. I’m guessing it is some ESPN show. After talking about basketball the topic of Canadian rappers came up! Then one of the guys said a list of Canadian musicians and artists in general would be a short one. They came up with two or three names including “that half-Portuguese singer” and Celine Dion then one of the guys expressed great surprise that Shania Twain might be a Canadian.

Now I’m no Canadian jingoist nor do I have an inferiority complex toward the US but in Canada radio, unlike movies and TV, is usually local often with references to restaurants and streets we are familiar with and an emphasis on local teams. It just sounded so weird, so alien, to hear on an old Chum station the “personalities” talking about Canada as a foreign country that they didn’t know much about as if they didn’t even know they were on here. (That could be the case. I recall years ago John McEnroe on USA network being broadcast on TSN joking about lack of Canadian athletes only to be informed later by the play-by-play announcer that “it turns out we are actually on up there” or words to that effect).

I don’t have a problem with putting on ESPN programs – there may well be a neglected market for it. But I’d be very surprised if TSN get ratings anywhere close to the Fan or other local sports stations with such US programming.

I .ike the Dan atrick show. I totally agree with your view on that topic and the general ignorance about Canada. It’s OK to be ignorant about a topic, just don’t try to talk about it…The fact the show is broadcast in Canada (and not just in Toronto), their producier is an idiot not to warn them.

I listened to “C-Balls” show last night for a bit and had to turn it off. At approx. 5:30 they were taking calls, “should the Raptos trade Andrea Bargnani?”. It was unlistenable
