three thoughts prompted by Dowbiggin’s latest column:
1. there was near universal agreement in these parts about the trainwreck that was Dutchyshen on 1050. Unsurprisingly Bruce enjoyed it. then again, maybe his endorsement was in jest, given his affiliation with TSN’s rival radio station.
2. is there a reason Bruce has an @shaw email associated with his column, rather than an @globeandmail one? seems odd. any other globe columnists have external emails listed?
3. has anyone, TSM for example, reached out to Bill Houston to see if he would sit down for a pressbox interview, or do a guest column here every now and then? it was a shame he shut down his blog right before the whole FAN house-cleaning. i would love to hear his thoughts on the state of the media in the city.
enjoy game 7 everyone.
I’m surprised The Fan or TSN hasn’t taken a run at Sid and Tim from The Score (as far as we know, anyway).
I’m sure they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but they’d definitely be better than Krystal, and probably better than a fair bit of TSN’s lineup.
I catch their podcast now and then. It’s pretty good.
@daniel
I don’t think Sid could do some of the things that make the show so great on regular radio and the great part is the two of them together.
A lot of people are sleeping on the score. They have a great lineup of hosts starting with Bomani Jones right up to Tim and Sid. Just get them to drop Mauro Rinallo and all would be well in Scoreland
I ranted a day back talking about how I don’t think TV guys go well on radio, the exception of the rule I think would be Sid & Tim. Those guys have great chemistry
On the most part when sports anchors try to be funny, I think almost always come off as jerks. Seriously every TSN anchor and SN previous anchors who try to be “oh so witty” falls flat to me (ironic that McCormick was doing yesterday show) and giving them a longer time on radio just give me no interest what so over. There is something unappealing to me about the TSN anchor guys who try to be funny.
But I am not a prude because I loved watching Sid & Tim during Score Tonight, and they were funny in it. Not sure why but when they did it, it sounded like a friend joking around, while TSN guys sounds like too desperate trying to stand out. I guess it’s all opinion not sure why some connect and some just turn off.
The problem I have with sportsnetwork tv is that in the post ESPN hay day, everyone is a comedian. Everyone has shtick. I find that I only really tune in when something big has happened and I want to see an interview or replay.
I think it’s a little bit of a cult following. Not huge, but very loyal
Where would the Fan put them?
Great points. I have a post coming on this soon. I like listening to Dutchyshen, he has a good radio voice. It’s the content that I don’t love. I think that BD writes very apparently to his biases. I would guess that the reason he doesn’t have a G&M email address is that he’s a contractor and not a full time employee. I have typed with Houston in the past. However not since he moved away. I will try to reach out to him.
